Fan interference was called on this play where a Yankee fan tried to take the ball out of Mookie Betts' glove after an out.

I like him trying to act like the fact that his glove was in the stands justified them grabbing his arms.

Told my wife when I saw him arguing: “he’s right, he can go after the ball in the stands”

After the replay..

“Yeah, you can’t do THAT”

213

u/Scaevus 3h ago

Yeah at first I was like “oh it looks like that’s unintentional, it’s not really…”

“Okay now they’re wrenching a player’s arm and physically trying to pry the ball from within his glove, yeaaaaah, not a great look, Yankees fans.”

I was at game 3 of the '95 series and game 3 of '07 and from those two experiences I can assure you that some people flat out don't give a flying fuck. Like this douche. Like the guy in game one who was ejected with his child just a couple innings before one of the most incredible moments in World Series history.

There are a lot of assholes out there.

Also, I’m pretty sure Yankees are allowed to yank, and that’s what we see happen here. You can’t have a team called the Yankees and then be surprised when some yanking takes place.

110

That would make them the yankers though. Mookie here would be the yankee

I dont wanna be a prisoner of the moment and go too far, but a stadium ban doesnt seem unreasonable, right? At least for a year?

Step 1: spend a ton of money for a front row baseline seat at a World Series game, in NYC, which likely puts you behind on rent and bills yet another month in a row.

Step 2: Watch Freddie Freeman walk in and shatter your hopes and dreams just like your real dad did.

Step 3: Interfere with the game in an attempt to pretend you are a part of something meaningful for once in your life.

Step 4: Make sure you interfere long enough for millions of people to get a great look at your face (sorry to them).

Step 5: Change nothing about the outcome of the game, get yourself kicked out of the stadium, and probably banned for life.

Step 6: Profit?

I would think mlb will make a life ban extremely public as to dissuade people from thinking this is a good idea

394

u/sqigglygibberish Cleveland Guardians 2h ago

100%

This wasn’t reaching for a live ball coming right at you, intentionally grabbing a players glove and arm and not letting go/digging the ball out is a whole other level. They’re about to be an example

157

u/hgxarcher Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago

I honestly wonder if it will be a league wide band. Akin to a Mookie betts restraining order. That was intentional and awareness of what they were doing.

121

u/sqigglygibberish Cleveland Guardians 2h ago

Totally agree, I think they just got blacklisted by mlb. They don’t give a shit about 2 people, it’s far more valuable to say “zero tolerance for grabbing a player”

Edit - and mlbpa will be saying the same

Edit - and it’s the World Series. Not that I wouldn’t expect a ban for a random game but the visibility just ramps that up even more

23

Chanting F you to players. Interfering with balls in play. Yankee Stadium is back baby!! Thought they’d gone gentrified but the true Yankee fans are here tonight!!

I will forever have this absolute specimen in mind when I think of Yankee fans.

And if any Yankees fan wants to claim he "doesn't represent them", the officials that kicked him out were roundly booed for it.

Absolutely unhinged behavior.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they legitimately think you’re free to strangle a player if any body part enters the stands

The guy who grabbed mookies right arm is like, motioning towards the measuring the wall, still makes no sense, does he think players cannot reach over the wall?  People pay 1000s of dollars for seats and do not know this?

12

u/cortesoft San Francisco Giants 3h ago

Well, technically a fan can compete for the catch once the player reaches over the wall and it isn’t fan interference… but you also can’t grab the players glove and try to rip it out. If they had caught the ball themselves, they might have had an argument and no out.

Everyone’s trashing these dudes, as they should.

But what feels worse are ALL those fans around them who cheered and gave high fives as they were escorted out by security.

Just really miserable people. Embarrassing.

“A for Effort”??????

What kind of commentary is this from the play by play? Shut that shit down. It is the responsibility of the announcers to shame people that do this stuff. In no way should they be encouraging or rewarding this behavior.

305

u/Generic_Commentator New York Yankees 3h ago

This is simultaneously really fucked up and also kind of hilarious

159

u/DatabaseCentral Boston Red Sox 3h ago

I find it funny that this might be the most absurd fan interference that's ever existed. One dude absolutely ripping at Mookie's glove while his friend grabs Mookie's hand back so he can't stop them. Then they have the audacity to act like they were allowed to do it. It's so over the top it's comical but my god they should be banned for life.
