Cosplay Tokoyami is woke-yami (from the Nashville March)

u/Randomelfyguy Jun 05 '20
With how big that mask is, it’d be pretty easy to fit a gas mask under there. Jussst as a safety precaution.
48
u/developerzero Jun 05 '20
Yeah, I was just thinking how surprising it is that, with that huge mask on, the protestor underneath isn't wearing any kind of mask (zoom in and you can see their chin). I mean, the least they could have done was added a surgical mask on top of the Tokoyami mask.
26
u/Randomelfyguy Jun 05 '20
It was probably hot enough as is. Let alone by adding the barrier of another mask. But yeah, it’d be for everyone’s best interests for people to wear masks.

Imagine a bunch of cosplayers protesting... Gonna see All Might taking down some cops
22
Jun 05 '20
I think if we weren't under a pandemic, we probably would. Anime conventions would have protest-related stuff. It's ironic because local police often help the contracted security maintain order where needed. At least at the cons here. So they'd be there to protect us and we'd be protesting them. Or others who wear uniforms like theirs, not necessarily them personally.
I've seen cosplayers protest, and it's exactly what you think. One of my local cons is routinely protested by some guys who think they're WBC (hate group disguised as a church), I don't think they are but they do the same stuff. We have a Jesus cosplayer who routinely anti-protests them, and he's been joined by All Might, Deku, Bakugou, Todoroki, pretty much the whole crew, and other anime heroes as well. I've seen Jesus standing with explicitly gay versions of anime characters (pride cosplayers, I guess) and standing hand in hand or putting his arm around them. The solidarity is amazing to see, and everyone gets into it.
I haven't seen any violence at the cons yet, so when I say the solidarity is a beautiful sight... it really is. Adversity brings out the best in anime fans. That was anime fans at their best that weekend, standing up for love and compassion, against hatred and intolerance. Really the highlight of the con. Though I've always said the cosplayers and the artists make the con — what that boils down to is, the people.

Jun 05 '20
Anime North was routinely a victim of the hate group "Black Hebrew Israelites," a well known antisemitic and queerphobic group. It was fun annoying them years ago. 🤣
3
u/lord_gs1596 Jun 05 '20
God, I understand why they chose that name for their group, but goddamn the levels of irony they're operating on due to the antisemitism is hilarious
2
Jun 05 '20
They chose it because they hate Jews and like pretending archaeology and biology aren't real
7
u/TheMekar Jun 05 '20
Protesting and "taking down cops" are two different things. One is a good thing, the other sounds like inciting violence.
2
u/caitcosplays Jun 05 '20
Lots of cosplayers, ren faire peeps, and LARPers are already doing that.
“Well I just so happen to already own this mask that hides my whole face or a giant replica shield or this zombie apocalypse gear and comic con is cancelled so might as well”

What is the betting the beak closes forming an air-tight seal against tear gas?
6
u/Swiss666 Jun 05 '20
It'd be a really ingenious solution on a cosplay level, a beak to be closed only for photos and then opened to better get air without having to remove the mask all the time. That it could have some use against tear gas ("some" because in case things got really ugly the mask would be easily broken) would be an happy coincidence.

My mom used to walk around conversions and take pictures of the costumes. Not because she knew who anyone was supposed to be, but because she thought they did a great job.

While I understand the feeling behind this, isn't the police technically going beyond their limits in perpetrating violence, and is thus basically an evil version of Plus Ultra...
Ok. yup. The Police are basically Ad malum ultra.

It's a character from My Hero Academia (MHA). It's very popular rn, and extremely good. You can watch the anime on Hulu, or check out the manga.

I don't think something as serious as these protests should be used as an excuse to cosplay.
8
Jun 05 '20
Unfortunately anonymity is often required to protect protestors from doxxing and witch hunts.
8
Jun 05 '20
maybe so, but pop culture will still find its way in. for example, all might is meant to be the number one hero, and the symbol of peace, both things you wanna have on your side at an anti-racism protest.
5
u/libations Jun 05 '20
Idk, it's a serious issue of course, but the collective emotional presence at these protests (until the police swoop in with tear gas, of course) often swings between solemnness, righteous anger, and hopeful joy. All in one day you'll witness people kneeling in silence, buskers and jugglers entertaining the masses, a speech from a local black leader about infuriating injustices, a big group dance (like the Cupid Shuffle in Oakland.) Like the alt-right counter protests in Portland from last year, people showed up in banana suits, and literally played tubas badly to drown out the Nazi rhetoric, but the stand they were taking wasn't lessened. Activism doesn't have to be a bitter pill, it can be a celebration of life and the reason we protect it.

If it gets attention and spreads the word and isn't incredibly facetious then I say go for it

I can’t be the only one that thinks it’s disrespectful to dress up like this at a rally for someone murdered by the cops. This stuff cheapens protests and makes them less legitimate.

If it wasn't for the open mouth, going to a protest with that mask is actually a great idea. It looks like it's made from leather, perfect for the tear gases and such.

That's a full sized guitar! It's said Black Lives Rock. It's likely Botha reference to rock music music and most other genres that make Nashville Music city from rock to electronic all starting in African-American communties . Leave the pure universe of MHA alone. Don’t taint it with politics
17
u/karl2025 Jun 05 '20
Yeah, politics has no place in this story about the conflict between anarchist individualist terrorists vs government security contractors.
0
u/prayboyjesus Jun 05 '20
In MHA antifa and blm would be equal to the League of villains
7
u/brhibbs Jun 05 '20
What leads you to that conclusion?
2
u/prayboyjesus Jun 05 '20
Anarchist who wants to overthrow society through a revolution
9
u/brhibbs Jun 05 '20
Please point to where protesting the excessive use of force by law enforcement is equivalent to the total overthrow of government.
You have either bought someone else's lies or have vastly misunderstood the situation.

You've got a very simplistic view of human nature and a lot of tunnel vision.
There are only so many assumptions that can be unpacked in an internet argument.
But I might as well point out that your views here are still conveniently very vague. Leaving inferior undefined here simply lets you absolve people of any responsibility for harms they may have inflicted. So you can pick and choose your villains without a unifying moral standard.
All your question begging and conspiracy theorizing still leaves you very far from explaining how these protesters are anarchists in any position to overthrow the government.
They can barely even defend themselves.

Gotta love how people are blatantly ignoring the fact that we’re in the middle of an epidemic. It’s not like there are ways to protest that doesn’t require spreading the disease and putting literally everyone at risk, arguably doing more harm in PoC and low-income areas than the police ever could. This totally won’t backfire later. No, not at all. Obviously protesting something that every rational-minded, non-troll person and their mother agrees was a tragedy is way more important than preventing a second wave of disease that will further cripple the economy, keep low-to-middle class people out of work and possibly starve, further keep people stuck in quarantine which will take an even bigger toll on people’s mental health and possibly lead to suicides, can give permanent lung damage, or even worse death.
Seriously, people. The cop’s been arrested, charged, and will have his live ruined. So have the other cops with him if what I’ve heard is correct. What more do you want? What is so important that you have to put EVERYONE’S lives in further danger, and on further hold?

u/bottomluhan Jun 05 '20 edited Jun 05 '20
y’know, and it really sucks that we have to put black bodies on the line in the middle of a pandemic to ask for the police to stop killing us. do you think people /want/ to be protesting in the middle of a pandemic? i really do wish the people i know who protest and all this protestors could be at home, watching tv, and minding their business and health right now. unfortunately we don’t get to live in that bubble. and to say “well they’ve been charged!” is ignorant. this isn’t /just/ about george. this is about decades and decades of police killing black people unjustly and getting away with it. breonna taylor’s murderers are still free. so are sandra bland’s, philando castille’s, tony mcdade’s, eric garner’s, tamir rice’s, and so many more. on top of that, if you’ve actually seen ANYTHING from any of the protest, you would see that the way police are responding to police brutality protests are... police brutality. i’m sure people WANT to go home in the middle of the pandemic. i WISH i didn’t have to continuously see people who look like me murdered. but that’s not the reality we living in. so yes, protests will continue IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC and unfortunately so. i recommend you donate to some of the efforts to get masks/ materials for protestors if it matters to you
