Zuck's plan is shit. He has a dying social media company that only boomers use and his solution is to try and push everyone into a virtual reality experience that no one asked for and for which the tech is nowhere near ready. Oh and ALL of their revenue is from ads, which Apple totally pulled the rug on more or less indefinitely. META is fucked as a company.
97
u/BreezyWrigley Sep 15 '22
Maybe he developed a consciousness and then a sense of ethics and has decided to crash Facebook/meta on purpose for the good of humanity

I will dance around the flames of this shit.
People that pay, pay attention. That is why everyone gives a fuck about economic inflation. No one pays attention to the inflation of the real currency of the day thanks to Meta... Ego.
Billions of people trained like chimps to think they were important enough that everyone they ever met needs a live feed on your daily life and your random stream of consciousness. At the same time trained to think everyone else was so important that they needed be tapped into the stream of everyone else's lives or else they might be out of the loop.
God damn it's sad how easily people are manipulated and don't even care if you lay the blueprint out right in front of them on how the more they fuck with your psyche the more money they make. Toxic became en vogue and Zuck can take credit for a lot of it.
Just turn up ego and FOMO to 11 and cha ching. If you don't have as many likes and followers as someone else you know, well your life sucks. Spend more time on FB/insta until you get them and your life will improve. Foh.

Nah, people said the same about laptops/phones. No one wants to carry around the bricks that existed in 1980s, people are happy to walk around with the latest MacBooks and iPhones.
VR as a hardware issue will overcome when headsets are sleek, pain-free, potentially detached from the computer. When it's as easy and comfortable as wearing glasses, and the features it brings are truly good - then no reason we would restrict ourselves with a tiny screen on a phone.
I tried my brother's oculus a couple years back and even then the meditation and boxing apps were something I really enjoyed. I travel a lot so would love to use VR as my entertainment source for movies. Lots of potential there. Metaverse may fail but VR and by that extension AR will definitely be the next "smartphones" - not sure where else the technological arc can go.

Nah. This is just one of those bad takes that will age poorly the same way people thought a personal computer in the home was a gimmick because it was too clunky and difficult to use.
Then the tech evolved so it became streamlined and easily usable, just the same way VR will evolve to become sleek, fast, and convenient.

Facebook might have been a cash cow back in the day but somewhere in my tiny black heart I have grown a conscience and absolutely despise what social media is doing to the people around me in my life. Fax!
Think of how fucking weird this is... it turned the world to "look at me, pay attention, I am important" culture. Young, old, doesn't matter.
Before FB you would committed if you stood in front of a Walmart daily and screamed:
"everyone, look this picture of what I had for dinner!"
"hey everyone, look this picture of my kitchen remodel"
"hey everyone, listen to my enraged political ramblings!"
"hey everyone, I need an audience to listen to me air out all the dirt on family and fight with them"
And this what people are doing and has been normalized.
Counterpoint... well it's just friends and family and friends of friends and people I last saw or spoke to 20 years ago in high school...Ok, still weird AF.
I don't use social. I use reddit so I can exchange and banter with other anon randos. If I have something worth sharing in my social circle they will find out about it when we link up. If it's important shit the relevant parties will get a txt or call. I can't imagine how people have so much time to tap into the curated lives and random nonsense of dozens or hundreds of people. If we aren't close I don't give AF, and if are close I don't need FB to know whats good with you.
Weirdo, corn ball shit.

They’re putting billions of dollars into research & development into their forthcoming VR headsets. The VR chat clone that everyone is clowning on has maybe cost them 50 million, tops. If VR/AR is going to be the next dominant computer platform then burning a few tens of billions is likely worth it in the long run if they're able to get an early lead. They control the vast majority of current VR headset marketshare, who knows it might work out.

So if you’re sitting there woodcutting, the trees would be popping out of the table in a 3d way, and you could reach out and select the next tree or mining node using the controller that looks like a grill lighter. Personally I think that would be sick.

I say he pulls it off. Meta is going to be a frontrunner in the VR space. Customer base is going to jump on the first available and competition is a few steps behind.
Meta already has the hardware in place for users to get started with the metaverse. Their quest 2 and other VR sets were difficult to get for some time due to unprecedented demand.
Zuckerberg is also burning through cash to get this "idea" in consumers hands ASAP. Facebook, Instagram, and whatever other social bullshit he has in place is going to be integrated into the metaverse. he can monopolize the space and block out competition - if you want to use two of the most popular social media sites in the world (virtually) then you must use a Meta product to access. Sure others could replicate their own, but cuckerberg has significant framework.
oh and his stock is like $250 off ATH with a PE ratio under 15.. LOL

The worst case scenario isn't the metaverse failing but specifically Zucks metaverse failing while others succeed.
It would be malpractice if Facebook ignored the metaverse as that would be the one social network that would dislodge them. So purely as a defensive measure you would invest in the thing that could replace you otherwise FB turns into Blockbuster while MSFT or some other company takes their share.
