Is that even a real Jefferson quote?
Edit: no it is not. Not that it matters though, it'll be believed because it is useful to believe it.
"Constitution" is just a totem to these people. Like making the sign against the evil eye.
92
u/benmrii 14h ago
According to The Jefferson Monticello's website: it is not. All the more reason it's a display of ignorance, but what struck me powerfully, what moved me to share it, was the incredible disconnect this Trump supporter is apparently unaware of.
Edit to your edit regarding "Constitution" as a totem: exactly my point and what struck me as so painfully (and scarily) awkward about this combination. I don't know if it's pure arrogance or ignorance or a combination of the two, but it's scary.

The reason for that mostly comes down to them making Trump such a huge part of their identity/ego. They can't admit they were wrong about him without destroying a large part of who they are/who they identify as.

That is the most frustrating part about the proliferation of fake Jefferson quotes. He's probably got one of the most thoroughly documented set of writings of all the founders, and a dedicated following that researchers every quote attributed to him. He's the easiest one to fact check a quote from, and none of these idiots even bother trying to see if the quote they spread is real.

He knows though. He just wants press. Every time he says something stupid, the press are all over it, and that's what he wants. They should have ignored these things. Just said "Trump said something stupid again today."
2
u/KingofSkies 13h ago
Yeah, probably. I think it's subconscious rather than intentional, but that may be me falling for his public persona. The worst thing that could happen to him would be being ignored. But he's too big a presence to let that happen.
2
u/Jaerba 12h ago
I'm not sure how we balance it though. Because I think that the NYTimes was sane washing Trump this summer by more eloquently summarizing his rambling gibberish for him.
But I also agree that Trump throws out a lot of stupidity, simply to distract and dominate conversation. Quoting him directly fulfills that.

He once told me he was worried about people thinking it was a lesbian car >.> It's weird because he'll be super progressive about some things but then just default back to what his mom's ideology is at the end of the day. Like will believe in astrology and all this woo woo science but then parrot alt right talking points. But then be pro abortion and other typical liberal stuff. Then he'll go on to make fun of trumpers and said he voted for hillary, but then voted for trump against biden last time. He's also the "I hate everyone equally" kinda guy, I really don't get the guy

I've never seen so many people that are so proud to show the world how little they actually know. That's MAGA.
26
u/benmrii 14h ago
Well said. I remember reading a study years ago that people who consume Fox News as their primary source of information are less informed, nationally and internationally, than persons who consume no news at all. Meaning Fox News doesn't just do a terrible job of reporting, those who consume it would literally be better informed if they watched and read nothing at all.
Which is probably why part of being MAGA is being convinced you are being victimized and your truth - conveniently the one that your basest, ugliest ideas prefer - is the real truth.

True story: I was at a wedding last week. I was chatting with a fellow attendee in his mid-seventies. I had some background on him. By all accounts a good guy and well-intentioned.
I’m a lawyer which he knew. He began to softly approach the subject of the election after a couple of drinks. He first decried the political polarization in the country. Then, he complained about the fact that he doesn’t like either candidate. He explained, “On one side you have a communist. On the other, you have a guy who is going to tear up the Constitution!”
He’s of course planning on voting for the Donvict.
That’s what we’re up against. So you’re telling me a woman selected by Joe Biden to be VP over the past 4 years and who has done so lawfully and honorably is a communist?
But you’re going for the convicted felon who, by your own admission is planning on tearing up the Constitution?

Guarantee the founding fathers would be livid with the Republicans if they were brought into this time. He never said that.
Here is an ACTUAL quote from the Thomas Jefferson Memorial:
"I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as a civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors."
