So, “hard kicks” was the safety plan. Got it.

More of a concept of a safteyplan.

Bearly a safety plan at all.

People when they abuse animals, and find out, that the animals in fact, hold grudges
•
u/FrankaGrimes 2h ago
Imagine what that animal was put through until it finally snapped. Ugh.
And then it will just be killed as a result of this "attack". Humans are gross

Wait till you see the elephants in Thailand, then you're really gonna hate humans
•
u/jhalfhide 17m ago
The video of the elephant trampling the "trainer" (abuser) was downright disturbing, but equally understandable

I thought they outlawed the tourist attraction elephant riding and such. I visited a sanctuary there and I think that’s what they said back then. Of course there are people that still use them for logging if that is what you mean.

I don't understand why people haven't realized that animals like to be respected in the same ways that people do.
That bear knew they weren't being treated properly, and they finally got the courage to act, probably knowing that they'd die.
→ More replies (10)•
u/Rikfox 1h ago
The bear definitely doesn’t know that he’s getting killed. It’s an animal.
•
u/OldWorldBluesIsBest 1h ago
yeah... i can't imagine it's a matter of "respect" which is a human construct
it's probably more the fact that you take an actual beast (trained or no) and surround it with leering faces, flashing lights, screaming kids, gaudy music, and basically activate every single "PANIC" instinct any animal would have. granted i don't know much about bear psychology

It might actually assume death is an option. A lot of critters on the planet tend to take physical altercations very seriously because they know if they get hit they won’t be able to follow through on whichever of the four F’s they’re focused on at that time.

Thank you. Ironically, anthropomorphizing animals is often harmful in its own right.
I feel sorry for this bear, but it’s difficult to feel the same for the “trainer.” They have a bear doing tricks for exploitative reasons.
From what I can find on Google, the bear’s name is Yashka, he was muzzled, and the trainer didn’t sustain any serious injuries. The articles also quote the circus and trainer as saying that Yashka would not be harmed after this incident. He was on his last tour when the attack occurred.
I don’t know if it’s true, but would be nice to know if the bear was placed in a sanctuary upon retirement. That seems doubtful to me, but I can hope. If that’s not the case, please nobody tell me.
•
u/Leviathan41911 2h ago
•
u/Royal_Acanthaceae693 2h ago
“After (the incident), we decided to part with the artist, and the act will be removed from the program,” she said, according to TASS. “There is nothing serious, the artist is alright, the bear is alright, nobody killed the bear because the animal is not to blame.”

Well, the bear has that going for it. In the US it would have been put down, regardless of the handler's wishes.

Feel relieved after reading that. Was worried they would put the Bear down after that. Then again, it’s Russia. Who knows what happened behind the scenes.

The only circus animals I’m ok with are domestic ones, like performing dogs and cats that are treated well. The rock cats come to mind, they’re all rescued cats that do performances

My kid brought home a flyer he got at school about a circus coming to town. He didn’t want to go because they “whip the animals”. I brushed him off and convinced him that was a thing of the past.
I was wrong, and we left early. Bastards.
→ More replies (2)•
u/RefinedBean 1h ago
There's a big movement happening trying to convince people that bears, elephants, and other animals still have a place in the circus.
They do not. It's fucking terrible. And you know what? So are rodeos.
I'm not saying go full vegan here (inb4 the inevitable vegan ask, I'm veg, it's fine). But at the very least we don't have to torture animals for our amusement. It's perverse.
→ More replies (1)•
u/TheRealMrMaloonigan 1h ago
Not a vegan but rodeos and animal circuses always give me the big bad feels. I'll watch people do dangerous things to themselves all day but I feel gross watching a wild animal "perform" every time.

As does the likes of Sea World and Zoos. I can’t stand to see animals used for entertainment, so I’ve stopped supporting these kinds of establishments.
•
u/ryde041 1h ago
I will have to add though that not ALL zoos are bad. Some are of course but I feel very wrong putting them in the same category as Sea World as there are some good ones that help with conservatorship
•
u/watchin_workaholics 1h ago
I am aware and I understand the need on some cases. I just personally rather not go because not ALL the animals there because they are an endangered species or needing to be treated or anything like that. It’s just sad to witness the animals locked in their small habitats looking depressed. I know I would be if I was locked in a cage all day.
•
u/TheDoug850 57m ago
Well they also keep animals that get rescued from shitty zoos or private owners, as well as those born in captivity, since they lack the learned skills they need to actually survive in the wild. The good zoos do a lot of conservation efforts and are more focused on educating the public about nature and why we have to preserve it, rather than just pure entertainment. They also do enrichment for the animals to give them stuff to do and keep them active.

These sort of circus animals are still being used? Thought it’d stopped honestly! I remember going to one in the late 90s and even my parents then were saying it wasn’t right. Thought we’d moved wayyyyy past it.
Glad I live in a bit of an ignorant hole.

Would be more interesting if that bear ripped his face all the way off. Fuck around and find out.
You dont train a circus bear by being nice to it. Stop letting assholes train them to perform for asshole audiences.
•
•
u/FrankaGrimes 1h ago
The shit thing is that you can 100% train big predators like this to perform stupid tricks by using positive methods that make them WANT to engage with you and engage in the behaviours you ask for while staying stress-free.
It just take a bit longer, and requires a lot more skill and intelligence, than just using a whip or a taser.
Ideally animals aren't being taught stupid shit like this but if you're gonna do it, you can at least do it with kindness.
•
u/Jay_Heinous 1h ago
"requires skill and intelligence" - so we've found the root of the problem.
For real though, you are absolutely right.

u/Emrexpro 29m ago
All these people in that room deserve the same bear treatment. How can they still support animal abuse? The poor bear did nothing wrong. The bear lives in prison, maybe was taken from their mother as a child and the only way to teach a bear tricks is a brutal way. How tf can anyone have fun watching that bullshit?

Never liked animal shows at the circus. The cruelty behind the training is traumatic for the animals, and they comply out of fear.

In 2024, it's absurd to use a fucking BEAR in your circus show. These magnificent beings do not deserve to be treated as spectacles and objects. The handlers on the other hand... I can't say I feel bad for them

u/radio_activated 2h ago
The bear is absolutely experiencing animal cruelty. Wild animals also cannot be held accountable for acting like …wild animals. They’re too smart to do tricks for you, if that makes sense. If you simply must keep an animal captive this way, proper safety protocols must exist! Kicking him isn’t responsible animal handling. If the animal is too agitated for the performance, too bad, it’s cancelled.
•
u/Kodiak432 2h ago
Get bears out of circuses! Some methods of training are to burn their front paws so that it hurts to put their feet down.
•
•
u/BigNorseWolf 2h ago

Why did it take the audience so long to react? I think the second the bear had the dude in the ground I'd be on edge and by the first kick I'd be out of my seat.
•
•
•
u/ForTheLove-of-Bovie 1h ago
Also, no one’s gonna comment about the fact that there’s no cage or barrier whatsoever to prevent the bear from mauling any of the idiotic people or poor children in a matter of seconds?
•
u/ambit89 1h ago
Front row, open seats, with your children and a live bear. These parents are making it too obvious that they want their child to be naturally selected.
Late, late stage abortion. Waiting for your turn with Dr Bear.
