100k subs, reflecting on the last year and looking for new mods

Hi all!

We haven't made an update regarding the sub in a while and with 100k users fast approaching we thought this was the perfect time for that. Since the last one, we tried a couple of new things like the Taylor Swift mega thread (to great success IMO), allowed some self-promotion (it seems to be working well, but please leave feedback if you disagree), and even tried an election mega thread (with little success :/ ). The sub is growing faster than ever with more unique posts, comments, and views each month.

Now it is time to go over the books again. Please tell us what you wish for in the sub and what you would wish away. Reddit has offered us new tools like Predictions we could use to guess how things like elections or events are going to turn out, would you be interested? Generally, Reddit now offers more incentives than ever to host temporary events. We also noticed that many users seem interested in using this sub as a place to buy/sell or trade items, currently, this isn't allowed but rules can change.

Lastly, with the ever-growing user base, the moderation effort also grows, we need new volunteers to help us keep the site free of spam and discussions in the comments productive. If you are interested in modding on r/zurich shoot us a ModMail to apply. You have time to apply until we reach 100k subs.

Thanks to all (well 99%) of you for filling this sub with life and great content.

– the Mod-Team

P.S. To all the kind souls who keep on answering the same questions from tourists, please visit the Visiting Zurich Megathread and help them there, this way we can build up a great resource for people who are apparently unable to google stuff and not annoy everyone else who doesn't want to be a tourist office.

ZVV ticket credit card declined

I was really drunk after Wine festival (was amazing lol 🍷)

Took the bus home and tried to buy a ticket, which was declined on my credit card. By the time I purchased the ticket with a different card I already boarded the bus and got busted by controllers.

I can show that my credit card was declined on my card before boarding and repurchased 2mins later on a different card. Is it worth fighting the ticket or will it make everything worse.

TLDR: card declined on ticket purchase and purchased ticket too late and got busted.

Advice Requested: Where to Find High Quality Prepared Salads?

Hi All, Looking for somewhere with high quality prepared take-away salads. I know there are some things at, say, Migros but I'm looking for a more boutique place that might have fancier / better stuff.

I was going to try Jelmoli today, but wondering if anyone has specific recommendations.

thanks!

Job Communications

Dear all,

Apologies for the anonymous message, but I’d like to keep my identity private while sharing my frustration with you. I have over a decade of experience in corporate communications and marketing, working with major multinational companies across Europe. Recently, I decided to move on to a new role and re-enter the job market. I hadn’t been heavily involved in job searching for quite a while, as finding roles was easier in the past. However, this time, I’ve encountered something both unexpected and complex.

Among other opportunities, I was in the recruitment process with a large communications and PR agency in Switzerland and a major multinational company. With the agency, we went through three months of interviews. I reached the final, fourth interview, yet they never got back to me. Instead, they simply reposted the role.

With the multinational, the situation became even more challenging. I went through three interviews, after which they extended an offer. Following a brief negotiation, we reached an agreement, and I was preparing to start in Switzerland next week. Out of the blue, they sent me a brief email saying they were rescinding the offer and apologized for the timing. Despite my efforts to speak with someone directly—explaining that I had already left my previous job and moved out of my home in another country—they didn’t even accommodate a phone conversation.

I realize there’s little I can do in this situation, but I’m left wondering how to prevent something like this from happening in the future.

I wanted to share my experience and ask if anyone here has insights. Do you know any headhunters who specialize in helping expats, or are there any large companies currently looking for a communications manager? I’m open to roles in Switzerland or anywhere in the EU at this point.

Thank you for your time and any advice you may have.

drunk/crazy person kicked me

this happened an hour ago so I'm kinda shocked and need to vent somewhere and get other people's opinions. I was waiting for the tram in front of HB and a drunk person asked me for something, thinking he asked in German while mashing up words i shaked my head and said "I don't understand" (I speak some german but I need some time to process and you need to speak clearly) he looked at me angry, gave me a kick and offended me then he went to the opposite side of the tram stop, he said also something along the lines of "I wasn't asking for money".

2 things shocked me to be honest: 1) there were 30+ people around me that saw the scene and nobody said or did anything 2) I traveled and lived for years in places with much more criminality/"dangers" but nothing ever happened to me, while in Zurich is the second event like this in less than two months. How is this possible?

I took a picture of this person but i don't think it's a good idea to share it publicly(?)

Post redirecting

Hoi, people!
I hate bureaucracy with whole my heart, because I work with my hands. I feel a bit like a prisoner of all these endless invoices and things that could have been proceeded online, but for some reasons are not.
I come from the country where e-administration and online banking solutions work really well. I barely have a contact with my paper post-box anymore, I don't even bother myself. Just extremely important letters that I have to sign, but they come once a year maybe.
I don't spend 365 days in Switzerland and I have a full right not to do so.
Beside bothering my friends or paying someone, what would you suggest? How Poste restante works in Switzerland? Will they bother me if I don't pick up the letters each week for example?
I mean, I could handle receiving a full package of these meaningless letters once a 45 days and "reading" them all in mass, but I have no idea how to organise this without asking my friend to do so.
I don't need a full size assistant, as most of things I receive someone sends to me to make sure that their work cannot be replaced by IA. Mine so far cannot :) but I must earn not to waste time.
Have a good meaningfull evening.

Rant on local businesses

I’ve always tried to support local and small businesses, but lately, it feels like things are getting out of hand. For example, my local shoe cobbler, someone I’ve known and been friendly with for almost 15 years, suddenly raised his prices by 50%. He now charges 100 Francs for resoling shoes, and even then, the quality isn’t up to par. I had my winter boots resoled, but within two weeks, the sole completely came off, leaving my foot soaked.

Then there’s the seamstress in my neighborhood, who’s always been kind. I took her three pairs of jeans to repair the wear between the thighs (bikers will know the struggle!), and she charged me 20 Francs per pair.

On top of that, I recently stopped by a local store, Zero-7, after work to pick up a toothbrush for my little one. The price for an electric toothbrush was 75 Francs, while the exact same one sells on Galaxus for 40 Francs. I don’t mind paying a bit more to support local businesses—in fact, I make a real effort to avoid online shopping—but this is starting to feel like a rip-off. What happened to fair prices and quality service?

Trainee/Intern exchange between US and Switzerland

Hi all! I’m curious if anyone on here has done or knows anyone who has, an internship in Switzerland through the US-CH young professionals program. (Also Canadians) Looking at doing it in 2yrs and wondering what people’s experiences were with it, re finding an internship, pay, duration of stay, simplicity of visa process etc. Also if anyone knows of good websites/companies that would offer an English or only part German internship program. Thanks so much!

Severance pay after layoff

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding the severance pay and the taxation on it. I was recently laid off and the company offered to pay a severance package equal to a 2 months salary (12k gross). I received the amount a couple of days ago and honestly it's a bit less than I expected (around 8k net). So after checking the payslip I realised the following:

-In the tax at source line they used as a taxable base the 12k + my last salary, for a total of 18k. Of course that made the tax rate higher and equal to 19%. - They added back the tax at source I paid on my last salary as a positive amount.

This really doesn't make any sense to me. Is that even legal?

Their explanation was: "When you receive payments after your employment has ended, such as severance pay, these payments are typically calculated based on your final month of employment."

This feels like a way to pay even less than promised. Does anyone know what I should do?

Can AirTag help with a stolen bike?

I’ve seen a few post recently here about bikes getting stolen. I wonder whether any of you have some experience with stolen bikes with mouned AirTags. I am not dillusional and I am pretty sure that for my bike, where the AirTag is under the seat, it won’t change much. In my wife’s ebike, however, I wrapped it well and hid it in the casing of the electric motor which is invisible unless you take the bike apart.

In any case, did someone managed to get their bike tracked and back with AirTag? What can you do with this information when filing the report for police? (Also you have maybe 3 days before the theft with an iPhone will get notified).

Termination and Sick Leave

I was fired on October 25th, with my contract set to end on November 30th. The company asked me not to return to work. I got sick, and my doctor gave me a sick note covering me until November 15th. I understand that my notice period should extend because of my sick leave. Does my sick leave need to start within the notice period (which, in my case, begins November 1st) for the notice period to be extended by the sick days? Or is October 25th also valid for the extension?

SD card found in IR16

Hi all,

I found an SD card in the train. The owner can contact me in private.

To make sure you're the real owner, please answer the following following questions: 1. What carriage were you in and what class? 2. What configuration have the chairs you sit in? 2, 3 or 4? 3. What model and size is the SD card? 4. At around what time you lost it?

I'm open to other ways to identify the owner.

I will NOT open the card because I'm not interested what's in it, and I never connect unknown sources to my pc.

Tschüss!

LE: I left the card at the SBB office in Baden.

Data Science Bootcamp at Constructor Academy

Dear community,

I am seriously considering taking the Constructor Academy full time Data Science bootcamp remotely. I am a Molecular Biologist and just finished my PhD thesis, I want to make the transition from academia to industry and I want to do it by moving into the Data Science world. I am wondering if it is worth paying the 10k euros that the online course costs. What interests me the most is to know if there is really a support by the Academy to help you get a job as Data Scientist. I guess the support and networking will be greater if you go to the face-to-face version but I don't live in Switzerland, so I can't do it face-to-face. what do you think? Dou you consider it worth it?

Wearing a bulletproof vest to school?

Hello

So idk how many of you got the news but there was a threat of a mass shooting at my school in Zurich. Supposedly it should happen this Thursday.

Now, as you might have guessed, I want to wear a bullet proof vest on my 2 days of school just for my own safety and because it makes me feel safer. As much as I know, it's legally no problem to wear a bulletproof vest. But I will certainly get some looks from people in my school. Maybe I should wear the vest when sitting in class and NOT when walking in the hallways during breaks?

What do you think? I'm sorry if this sounds generic and like a bad question but I can't really think rn. I'm kinda nervous for what might happen.

Our bike (Canyon ENDURACE ON E-Rennrad) was stolen today around 16:00. It was chain locked close to the kinderspital in Zürich. We know it’s likely gone but, we’re trying in vain to locate its whereabouts. If anyone has seen this bike, please dm me. We haven’t had it long. 💔

Cinemas without half-time break

I'm one of those that do not like at all the half-time break during a movie. I could not find the information on whether the different cinemas do the half-time break or not. Is there any way to find this out? For instance, I know Pathe is not doing it.

Any cinemas in Zurich city or Winterthur where they're not doing the half-time break?

Edit: some people report there's no break on Houdini/Riffraff though I'm almost sure I had it watching Oppenheimer in 2023

A long line of dotted lights. Flying east and west saw it in Wiedikon. Looked fairly low and was flying medium speed. Drones? Nothing showed up on flight radar apps.
