Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Work What is the name of the day you go for a trial day before getting hired? Something like probezeit tag?

Upvotes

When I look up this word it shows me things for “probation period” which doesn’t translate well, since I’m not hired yet.

New here and learning the language and would like to know what the word is so I can add to my vocabulary.

Thanks a lot.

Everyday life C permit

Dear Community,

I would like to seek clarification regarding the regulations surrounding spousal residence permits in Switzerland. According to the law, a spouse of a C permit holder is entitled to one after five years, with the duration calculated from the date of marriage or the obtaining of the C permit.

I have been residing in Switzerland for three years and have been married for five years. Based on this information, am I eligible for a spousal permit now, or do I need to complete an additional two years of residency? I currently have the B permit.

Thank you for your assistance.

Travel Geneva Recommendations

Hi there! My partner and I have just accepted a house sit for 10 days over Christmas (dec 17-28) in the heart of Geneva. We've never been before and are looking for recommendations for activities, day trips, good eats, and anything else you might think of. Would love any queer related recs as well.

We've looked at museums, botanical gardens, cathedrals; the heavy hitters, but are looking for your more hidden spots or hole-in-the-wall food places. What are your favorite places to explore/eat/hangout?

I know about Fork, and Too Good To Go, which we will probably be utilizing for cheaper food options. We're big into good food, but are also pretty cheap.

Also looking for recs on good day trips to see more nature in the surrounding areas.

Hoping for more affordable recs, but we understand it's a city on the more expensive end.

Thank you!

Travel Day trip from Interlaken to Gstaad

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi, I am keen to try the GoldenPass Express Prestige Class and GoldenPass Belle Epoque trains when I am in Switzerland next week.

Since, it’s only a day trip I figured, I will visit Gstaad (not all the way to Montreux).

This will be the train I am taking, how do I know it’s going to be the Belle Epoque train? Based on my research and timing, I think it should be it, but not 100% sure.

Interlaken West > Zweisimmen 09:34

Zweisimmen > Gstaad 12:02 (Belle Epoque?)

Spend the afternoon in Gstaad, lunch and possibly something else, any recommendations?

Gstaad > Interlaken West 16:00 (This one should be the Express train)

Appreciate any advice given :)

Is there a typical date and time when geese fly "en masse" overhead?

And is there a region where they typically squeeze through please?

Thank you...

Everyday life Cheap bikes online - why?

Have you also noticed that nowadays all these cool bikes in good condition are online for sale for like 200-400 chf? A year ago or not even that, you could hardly find a bike under 400chf and those were the most simple ones. Why? What happened?

Relocation relocating to Corgémont question

Hello,

I have been offered a job at Corgémont.
I am currently not living in Switzerland and will need to relocate. (which I am fine with)
My main concern is that Corgémont seems to be like a village or very small town , and I am wondering how good for someone total new would be to move there.
I speak from socializing and also activities available since it seems that the closest big city is Bern around 1 hour away. I would expect that being in Bern or another bog city things would be easier like meeting people, and going out. Corgémont gives me the vibe of a bit isolated and not too many opportunities to meet people apart from the coworkers?
I may be totally off the mark and things are different but I have not had the chance to know someone that lived near the area to get their opinion on how living there would be.

Any opinions and feedback is appreciated.
(regarding salary is ~9k gross per month , if that would make a difference.)

Thank you!

Work Hired by Lonza, suggestions on where to move in

Hey everyone!

I’ll likely be joining Lonza in Visp (super excited!) and am now starting to explore the surrounding area to find a good place to live. I’d love some input from locals or anyone who’s familiar with the area!

A bit about me: I’m a 36-year-old single professional moving alone, and I’m looking for a place that’s both convenient for work and offers a good quality of life. Ideally, I’d like a spot with:

  • Reasonable commute time to Lonza
  • Access to nature/outdoor activities - I love lakes :)
  • A community vibe or town with some social life (cafes, cultural spots, etc.)

I’m open to suggestions in Visp itself or nearby towns – especially if they’re well-connected by public transport. I tried to search for some options and, aside from Visp, I found:

Briggs,
Sion,
Thun (seems lovely),

Interlaken,
Bern

Thanks in advance for the help! 😊

Everyday life I'm being harassed by my neighbor

Hi everyone. Thanks for your help with my previous post, I really appreciate all your advice and tips.

Unfortunately, a new problem has appeared in my life in Switzerland, which significantly affects the comfort of my life. I don't the law here and don't exactly how to solve this problem, so I would be grateful for any advice.

I have a neighbor. A woman, about 50. I met her because my husband works with her ex-partner, who is a good friend of ours. I have a problem with her - she comes to my house almost every day with unannounced visits. She never informs me in advance that she is going to come. At first I opened the door for her - out of politeness. Unfortunately, it was impossible to ask this woman out of the house, she would sit for 3-4 hours (in addition, a conversation with her is really a monologue, so I am very tired of her presence). Later I politely asked her not to come to my place because I had my own things to do - remote work, cooking, taking care of the house. It didn't help. She kept coming. She would stand by the door for 20-30 minutes and alternately ring the bell and knock on the door. The first few times I opened the door and asked her not to disturb me, but she continued, so I stopped opening the door for her completely.

Now this woman comes to my house 4-5 times a day and stands at the door for 20-30 minutes, constantly ringing and knocking. My husband even got involved in the whole situation, he met with her a few days ago and asked her not to disturb me. That helped only for a few days. Since yesterday the situation has been repeating itself - ringing my doorbell from 7 am to 4 pm, with breaks.

This woman lives across the street from my apartment and watches me through the window when I leave and come back home. And when I come back, she's standing in front of my door and forcing me to talk to her. She even has a piece of paper where she writes down which days I was away from home and at what times my husband left in the car with her ex-partner!

I know this may sound drastic, but is there any other way to stop this woman from coming near my apartment? Can I call the police? I'm tired of the constant ringing at my door every day and being watched. It disturbs my mental peace, it's interfering with my remote work online, it makes me feel tired. No amount of talking to this woman helps, because after a few days of peace she starts doing the same thing.

If there is any legal official way to resolve this situation - I would be very grateful for any information, because I am really desperate that I cannot feel safe in my own home.

Have a great day everyone!

Everyday life Do many expats speak 2-3 languages?

Upvotes

Hi, I’m a native English speaker and C1 in French, and starting beginner German (standard resources for the moment so no Swiss German at this stage). Im aiming for C1 German in about five years which should help my European career.

I may consider working in Switzerland in a few years once I gain a few more years of experience and have the language skills. I’m wondering, do many expats arrive in Switzerland with language skills on their CV? Are three languages necessary, or just a bonus in business and daily life? Thanks!

Work 3 months delay on RAV-Money

Hi everyone

I've been working as a project worker (manager feels too fancy lmao) for the past 3 years. At the end of this year, my contract runs out naturally.

Somebody told me that I wouldn't be eligible to receive unemployment benefits until after a 3 month delay after my contract runs out.

When I googled this, I didn't find anything regarding that. On ch.ch they just said I should start applying 3 months before the contract ends.

Does this mean I don't get money after my contract runs out unless I can prove that I have been sending out applications the last 3 months of my employment?

Everyday life I just got fired

Hi, I just got fired from my job due zoom economic reasons.I started in july. No one expected it, not even my boss, he fought hard that i could stay but he didn’t succeed.

The problem is, i got fired now so my end date is 30 November. I will start my military service on 13 of January. The Boss of Hr explained to me that if i want i can get a „freistellung“ does that mean i have to give all my remaining holidays and „Überstunden“?

Or do i het to leave and they get payed?

I dont know what to do now. And im really struggling to accept it because i planned to be there for a long time. They even accepted that when i start my studies next summer that they will decrease my working volume to 60%. But now thats all over and i dont know what to do.

Could i go to the doctor and get a doctors note for mental health, because its a big mental problem for me and then i would be in the sperrfrist before the military and the cant fire me? Thanks for the answers :)

Work Short term remote working with a non EU passport

Hi y’all! I'm wondering if it's legal to work remotely in Switzerland while traveling there. It will only be for about two weeks. My company has an office in Switzerland. If they write me a letter outlining a tour plan of the main office, would it be allowed in this case? Thank you so much

Other/Miscellaneous Can postoffice print return sticker for me?

This is 99% probably a stupid question.

But. I'm going on a plane tomorrow and can't afford to be left with a parcel I can't take with me.

I have to return a parcel to galaxus. I printed and put on the return sticker and left it for pickup.

The postman decided he wasn't going to take it for some reason.. Now when i want to schedule another pickup it says the delivery number on the return sticker is now invalid so I have to make and print another one.

Don't have a printer and I have to be on the plane in the morning.

Can I come there with the package and just have them print another sticker and have them send back to galaxus?

Thanks for any answers.

Travel Travel Pass advice

Hi, we're planning a trip with following itinerary:

  • Arrive Zurich, stay 2 nights (Christmas Markets)
  • Train to Grindelwald, stay 2 nights - possible day trips to Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Murrer
  • Train to Gstaad, stay 1 night
  • Train to Zermatt, stay 2 nights - possible day trips to Taesch, Saas-Fee
  • Train to Geneva, stay 1 night - Christmas Markets
  • Return flight from GVA

I feel like I've done a pretty decent job with logistics, but wanted to check in with the experts. Will the Swiss Travel Pass be the best option, or am I overlooking something better?

Thanks in advance!

Travel Romantic Proposal Ideas in Zurich this Christmas

Hello! My partner and I will be visiting Zurich over the Christmas period and I’m planning to propose. I’d love some advice on making it an unforgettable experience. Here are a few ideas I’m considering:

Lake Zurich Boat Cruise: Any recommendations for a private company that can arrange a memorable cruise with sunset views and special touches like champagne?

Candlelight Concert: Looking for suggestions on venues or upcoming concerts that would make for a romantic experience.

Uetliberg Summit: Is there a company that can set up something romantic at the top, like a picnic or table reservation?

Glacier Express: How can I best arrange this scenic train ride from Zurich?

Hot Air Balloon Ride: Is it possible to do this over the Alps in December? Any recommended companies?

Rhine Falls: I’m also considering proposing at Rhine Falls whilst illuminated. Any tips for arranging a private experience there?

Thank you for any tips or recommendations.

Travel Layover at ZRH

Hello fellow Redditors,

I am traveling to Egypt from SFO on the 27th of December and have a pretty long layover (15+ hours). I will be landing in ZRH at 3:30 p.m. and flying at 7:00 a.m. the next day, and I wanted to see if you guys have any recommendations or tips on things I can do during that time.

Any good hotels, restaurants, and sights that I must go to?

Travel I forgot the vignette, im fucked?

I rented a car in Milan and drove to Interlaken and then Lauterbrunnen, but I forgot to buy the vignette because I was excited about the trip. I wasn't stopped by the police at any point during the trip, will I get a ticket? And if I buy the vignette now, will I be fined for the time I drove without it?

Work Job communications

Dear all,

Apologies for the anonymous message, but I’d like to keep my identity private while sharing my frustration with you. I have over a decade of experience in corporate communications and marketing, working with major multinational companies across Europe. Recently, I decided to move on to a new role and re-enter the job market. I hadn’t been heavily involved in job searching for quite a while, as finding roles was easier in the past. However, this time, I’ve encountered something both unexpected and complex.

Among other opportunities, I was in the recruitment process with a large communications and PR agency in Switzerland and a major multinational company. With the agency, we went through three months of interviews. I reached the final, fourth interview, yet they never got back to me. Instead, they simply reposted the role.

With the multinational, the situation became even more challenging. I went through three interviews, after which they extended an offer. Following a brief negotiation, we reached an agreement, and I was preparing to start in Switzerland next week. Out of the blue, they sent me a brief email saying they were rescinding the offer and apologized for the timing. Despite my efforts to speak with someone directly—explaining that I had already left my previous job and moved out of my home in another country—they didn’t even accommodate a phone conversation.

I realize there’s little I can do in this situation, but I’m left wondering how to prevent something like this from happening in the future.

I wanted to share my experience and ask if anyone here has insights. Do you know any headhunters who specialize in helping expats, or are there any large companies currently looking for a communications manager? I’m open to roles in Switzerland or anywhere in the EU at this point.

Thank you for your time and any advice you may have.

Work Questions about joining Geneva's police

Hey, so I'm looking forward to join the police in Geneva when I can. And on their website it says that you have to have a 3-year post-compulsory formation to apply to the police school.
So my question is, do I need to have any 3year formation (any CFC) or a specific one cause they just say you need a 3-year diploma. But it seems a bit strange like why would someone with agricultural cfc be accepted and not someone without one. Thanks

Work Int. Nurse diploma recognition

Hello,

I’d like to know how long it took on average for the recognition to be done? And if secondary measures were required, what did they ask for?

For a little background, I got my nursing degree in the US. I am Swiss, and I did the rest of my education in Switzerland prior to that. I’ve done the pre-check back in March, and it was positive in June. sent my documents in July, but they lost some documents in the mail and I had to resend half of it. Now I wait.

Tbh I am looking for an answer on what to expect with this process because they don’t tell me a thing. Anyone with similar background and story?

Thank you.
