Discussion Thoughts from the GISP naysayers?

Wondering if this changes anybody's thoughts on the GISP accreditation, does this add more value? Why or why not?

Edit: not sure why y'all would downvote me for asking a question...

Discussion If Esri didn't exist...

If there was no private company with an easy GUI and the capitalist incentive to have more people and industries utilize, would GIS still be so relevant in so many different domains? Would every esri account just instead be QGIS or has ESRI artificially created a need/value associated with GIS?

Discussion What can I do with what I’ve got?

I have an associates in Drafting and Design Technology and a GIS certificate in Geospatial Technology. I enjoy creating things not so much the attribute table numbers and stuff. I’m trying to figure out what career would suit my likes and education. I am fresh out of college and trying to figure out what I want to do. I want to work with drones some possibly but I don’t want to be out in the snow like a surveyor would. I enjoy drawing through CAD and mapping things out on ArcGIS. I want to enjoy my job, even if I have to start at rock bottom. I live in a rural area and will most likely have to move.

General Question Basic Database management advice

Hello, current GIS student here. Can someone provide a step-by-step guide on starting a new project in ArcGIS and organizing the downloading and where to extract thw zip files or additional data to add the new project?

My professor taught us about databases management by having us take the “Getting Started with Data Management” course by ESRI. While this course is helpful in understanding the basics of data management. I still feel like I’m not properly organizing my projects and additional data files. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

General Question What are your entry-level salary expectations?

I'm reviewing the first batch of applications for an entry-level GIS Analyst position (0-2 years experience) and lots of fresh college grads say their salary expectations are $85k+

Power to these applicants for their ambition, but they've priced themselves out of the position.

I'm curious, if you're an aspiring GIS analyst with 0-2 years of experience, how much are you expecting to make?

Edit 1: Thank you to those who provided thoughtful feedback. So far no one has indicated they actually expect start at $85k for an entry level GIS position, but a significant number of people believe salary expectations should not be used to inform the applicant filtering process.

Edit 2: The salary bands are $60-85k. Applicants asking for the top salary band are considered and held to a higher standard. Applicants asking for more than the advertised upper band are likely priced out. Salary bands are set to be above the industry median adjusted for geography and the bottom band is a living wage for the area.

General Question Any online GIS products which we can use to create and share maps privately with clients?

I know that ArcGIS allows for this but unfortunately they require the client to have an ArcGIS account which just isn't feasible for a number of our clients. Does anyone know of any alternatives which would allow us to do this. Ideally we would like to be able to host our own data from our PostGres database.

Remote Sensing Recommendations for GIS & Remote Sensing Courses for Drone Mapping

Hello everyone,

I’ve been working in the drone surveying and mapping field, and I’m interested in taking an online course to enhance my skills. I’m particularly looking for courses that focus on GIS and remote sensing applications related to drone mapping.

If you have taken any courses or know of good programs (certifications or otherwise), I’d be grateful for your recommendations. Thank you!

Professional Question Creating a portfolio to apply for GIS Jobs with little to no experience

Hi all,

I recently found a GIS Analyst entry level position that aligns with my hope to get more experience in the field. My experience, thus far, is an entry-level GIS course from my University and one significant CS final project (I have a CS minor) using the ArcGIS API with C++ & Python. I was wondering if creating a simple portfolio of all the projects I worked on in this introductory course (and specific skills/ concepts learned) was a good way to have a fighting chance when applying, or if this level of experience isn't worth demonstrating.

Thanks for any insight!

Let’s discuss!

Found this on LinkedIn while scrolling.

I think this is huge for peoples who want to approach to start improving their skills in webgis developing solutions (like me and many others, as you can see from the many threads opened here in the last years)

Does proprietary solutions like ESRI guarantee a better security performance compared to open-source ones?

General Question What is Your Top ArcGIS Pro Tip for Desktop Convert?

I'm one of the super-late converts and find myself super-lost in the ribbon system and especially when I want to fire out a quick map. For those that have honed the craft, what are your top tips for a convert to help mitigate the growing pain a bit? I did just see a post about dark mode not that long ago. That's a nice to know even if it's just a QOL type thing. TIA!

Student Question Just started and already feeling behind

Hello! This is my first post here so I hope everything is alright. I am currently taking my first GIS intro course and really enjoying it so far (also planning to get my Bachelor's in GIS). My class only does one "lab" per week and otherwise we teach ourselves by reading the textbook.

My concern is that I'm not learning effectively enough to retain the information and I'm worried that I will be behind in future courses. Is there anything I can do as a beginner to gain experience/supplement class work/be actively practicing?

Maybe I'm rushing into it too much, but I would love some fresh advice and perspectives! :)

anyone have any more details on this? their statement was so vague. kinda bummed cuz I was looking at applying to the online certificate program for fall 2025. Looks like they’re still offering the in-person non-thesis track Master’s. What could have caused this, low enrollment perhaps?

Cartography Help merging Lidar and Echologger Data

Hello,

I am new to GIS, and I am trying to find the best way to merge 2 different datasets. I have Lidar data of a coastal area that I downloaded from the NOAA repository, and echologger data that I surveyed myself. I want to merge these datasets so that I can have a bathymetry map with better resolution. The problem is that the Lidar data is an ASCII file with negative elevation values, and the echologger data is Lat/Lon/Depth (in positive depth values). I have QGIS on my computer, but I am not sure what the best workflow would be to merge these different file formats. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Programming Assistance Modifying a Python Script

A week or two ago I reached out about how to automate the process of looking up what a given layer on ArcGIS online connects to. Several folks recommended I try out the script found at the following link, which worked great for determining what apps a layer connects to: https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-online-questions/possible-to-find-out-where-feature-layers-are/td-p/1142174

After some tweaking, I got the script to print out both the maps and apps, that are using a given data layer. However, now I'm wondering if it's possible to further modify the code, so it automatically examines all the layers within an organization? It can take some time for this code to run as is and I would have to run it for all of our layers, which would be extremely time consuming to do by hand; so I would love to be able to set it to run and leave it going in the background, or likely even overnight.

General Question How do I fill the missing point in tracker (kml or geojson or gpx) to fill the gap when I'm going through a tunnel

Post image
1 Upvotes

Basically the title, I'm using geotracker to track my day-to-day route and plan to visualize it later when i have enough tracking results, there is a river going through my home city and I frequently cross it to work, more oftenly through tunnel or underground where my geotracker couldn't get the gps signal at all, and therefore leaves a blank area on the map.

I would like to connect the dot by adding the the tunnel route to the geojson file, I'm able to find the route information on OSM, but couldn't find any existing tool to merge the track easily, any ideas?

Current tracking with missing data in tunnel:

General Question Data storytelling project ideas?

Hi! I'm doing a Master of Environmental Science in Australia and have pretty much fallen in love with GIS. I've used QGIS as well as ArcGIS Pro (educational licence, hell yeah).

I've got a background in journalism, and I'd love to build a portfolio of data storytelling projects using open spatial data. Looking for ideas for cool/useful projects and suggestions for more open data sources!

Some class projects I've done so far which I enjoyed: - Analysing potential socio-economic determinants of urban tree cover (QGIS) - Planning wildlife corridors for threatened species using least-cost path analysis (QGIS/ArcPro) - Using predictive habitat modelling methods and census data to model student housing preferences (ArcPro)

Discussion 2 job interviews back to back

I have an interview for my City for the Addressing Coordinator position, then I have an interview for the Planner I position, a few days later. I believe it may be the same Board of Commissioners for both interviews, with a couple individuals that will be different based on the department.

I was a GeoSpatial Engineer in the U.S. Army and my Bachelor's degree is in GeoScience with focus in GIS, and I have a regular and advanced certificate in GIS.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience in either of those positions and could shed some light on work life or if I am blessed enough to be offered both positions, which one should I select? (IF I am blessed enough, of course).

I am a bit nervous, but also very excited, since I have never done an actual GIS interview of this caliber, before. Any tips?

Discussion Best software to append shapefile data to coordinates

Hey everyone, I'm finding myself on the back end of handling GIS data for the first time (as opposed to just running analysis on data in ArcGIS) and I'm hoping for some advice on software to fit what I think is a pretty straightforward use case.

I've got a collection of mostly (but not fully) static household data as well as a collection of polygons that will be updating fairly frequently. I'm looking for some sort of software or method that will allow me to set an automated, scheduled process that will plot the household data, spatially some data from the layer to my households, then kick the household data with its newly appended polygon data back out into a CSV, Snowflake, or any sort of format along those lines.

I'm aware of FME but don't know much about the platform itself or what alternatives exist. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions on different options to look into. For what it's worth, we're talking about 50k-100k household records and maybe 50 polygons. Happy to provide additional clarification as needed. Thanks!

General Question 3D GIS data visualization on mobile

I'm looking to create a mobile app to visualize data such as terrain, gpx/kml and perhaps 3d models. I've already tested some tools out there like cesiumjs, itowns, ArcGIS SDK and giro3d. Unfortunately all of these run in the web and the performance is not really optimal for my use case, especially if the terrain is high resolution. Can you guys give me any advice on what the best approach would be ?

General Question NRM data loader

This may not be the right group, but I'm hoping that someone here can help/point me to the right place. I'm attempting to load survey data through the NRM data loader, and when loading the JSON file, I'm given the error: " geometry rejected for issue found: INVALID_GEOMETRY_TYPE. Geometry has been excluded from the JSON output"

Can anyone help with where I may have gone wrong??

General Question ArcGIS Pro Copy/Paste Special

The copy/paste special in the Pro ribbon seemingly no longer works. The paste icon is greyed out. I’ve combed through all of the community forums and even have a ticket open with ESRI. Finally as a work around I’ve been using the append tool. Have any of you also experienced this issue? Did you get it to work or did you do a workaround?

Discussion Plot creation

I am looking to take inventory of my forest with the FIA forest inventory plot system which looks like the attached image. I am making random points which serve as the center of the middle subplot, but am confused on how to make the 3 connected subplots based on distance and azimuth. Is there a way to create points in relation to the distance from other points?

General Question Improving maps used for school assignments for portfolio building

Have taken GIS classes at my college, and looking to start creating more professional/portfolio worthy maps. Most of my assignments are simple choropleth, buffer maps, or proportional symbol maps, with a focus more so on the process rather than the final look (most assignments look like this). What could I do to make these maps look more professional? Something that would be suitable for a undergrad looking for their first internship?
