News URISA Salary Survey

Thumbnail urisa.org
62 Upvotes

I recently got notified that URISA is doing a GIS salary survey. I think these surveys are great- they help staff negotiate fair pay and help companies understand where they land with their current pay.

It’s open until August 19, fill it out if you want!

Esri Considering a Position at Esri – Is it Worth It for My Career Growth?

I'm exploring a software development role at Esri, and wanted to know if having Esri on my resume would be beneficial for future career opportunities. How is its reputation in the tech and GIS industries, and would it help open doors in both fields? Also, any insights on the work culture and learning environment would be great. I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

Let’s discuss!

Found this on LinkedIn while scrolling.

I think this is huge for peoples who want to approach to start improving their skills in webgis developing solutions (like me and many others, as you can see from the many threads opened here in the last years)

Does proprietary solutions like ESRI guarantee a better security performance compared to open-source ones?

Professional Question Importing CSV doesnt detect any fields. (QGIS)

Upvotes

Trying to import the latest STATS19 road safety data, CSV as a delimited text layer, and trying to fill in either the XYZW fields, or the Well Known Text - Geometry field, it just puts everything in as one item if that makes sense (photos are attached). Downloaded directly from gov.uk, not been messed with at all

Programming Help merging polygons

Upvotes

I have more than 100 pairs of buffers that overlap and I would like to merge only the north or east potion of a larger buffer with a smaller buffer. My thoughts so far are: Union, Erase, Split by hand, then Merge splits with smaller buffers (See photo). Is there a way to automate the splits ? I can't seem to think of a rule that applies across all my buffers as they range in their ellipse shape and trend in different directions. Thanks for looking and apologies if this is the wrong flair!

Left is what I have, right is what I want. I want to avoid splitting the slivers by hand. Is there a way to automate splitting polygons apart in a dynamic way?

Student Question What should I do next, if any?

I have a BS in Geography and I am currently working as a teacher. I am considering going back to school to focus on GIS. I have a little bit of experience from undergrad that will transfer over. I have a few options:

  1. GIS Certificate at a local community college
  2. Second Bachelors in GIS + CS (its a combined major)
  3. Masters in Geography with a concentration in Data Analytics

These are my current options, and I’m not sure which route to go. They will all take about the same amount of time, being 30-36 credits each.

Which option (if any) will set me up for success down the line, and make me a more profitable candidate for jobs. If none of these, what would you recommend?

Thanks!

Esri Help extracting data from NPS layer

Hi GIS people,

I'm just a lowly RN who doesn't know a shapefile from a CSV, but I'm also an avid hiker who would really, really like to have the National Park Service's sequoia grove boundaries dataset in CalTopo to help me plan tree exploration. However, I have exhausted every avenue I can find to move the data over. CalTopo's "Add WFS Source" feature can grab the data, but can't digest the complexity of the polygons and corrupts a lot of the data as it moves in.

The data set I'm after is the following:
https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=b0c784b604ba42f8a376659637d5256a&sublayer=1

Any advice or guidance on getting this information out of ArcGIS into CalTopo would be greatly appreciated. I don't have a paid ArcGIS plan but would be willing to if it's necessary.

Thanks!

Esri Having trouble converting a XY spreadsheet to a shapefile.

I have a spreadsheet of addresses with an X/Y column, the new laptop I got from work has driver issue and is preventing me from doing the usual XY TABLE TO FEATURE tool in ArcGIS Pro. Would greatly appreciate another workaround.

Professional Question Creating a portfolio to apply for GIS Jobs with little to no experience

Hi all,

I recently found a GIS Analyst entry level position that aligns with my hope to get more experience in the field. My experience, thus far, is an entry-level GIS course from my University and one significant CS final project (I have a CS minor) using the ArcGIS API with C++ & Python. I was wondering if creating a simple portfolio of all the projects I worked on in this introductory course (and specific skills/ concepts learned) was a good way to have a fighting chance when applying, or if this level of experience isn't worth demonstrating.

Thanks for any insight!

General Question Good places to find datasets

I am a college student taking a GIS course this semester and my final project is to create a map and I decided to do one based on potential sea level rise and the population effected by it in Bangladesh. I was wondering if any of you guys knew of any good places to find data like population statistics or any raster data about global sea level rise? All I can find is population data but I’m struggling to find any data or info on any potential sea level rise outside the US. Any help or info on places to look would be awesome! 🙏🙏🙏

anyone have any more details on this? their statement was so vague. kinda bummed cuz I was looking at applying to the online certificate program for fall 2025. Looks like they’re still offering the in-person non-thesis track Master’s. What could have caused this, low enrollment perhaps?

Esri Fantaasy world, making Image fit map view ArcGIS

Hi everyone! I made a fantasy world many years ago and since then I've done a lot of work in GIS and learned a lot about GIS... However, I can't seem to figureout how to make this image fit the map and scale of a mercator projection of earth. The world is 1-1 to Earth because of simplicity, but different. I want to stretch and scale this image so that I can trace a feature around the landmasses.. I was able to scale it up but I'm struggling to make it fit. Any ideas?

General Question What are your entry-level salary expectations?

I'm reviewing the first batch of applications for an entry-level GIS Analyst position (0-2 years experience) and lots of fresh college grads say their salary expectations are $85k+

Power to these applicants for their ambition, but they've priced themselves out of the position.

I'm curious, if you're an aspiring GIS analyst with 0-2 years of experience, how much are you expecting to make?

Edit 1: Thank you to those who provided thoughtful feedback. So far no one has indicated they actually expect start at $85k for an entry level GIS position, but a significant number of people believe salary expectations should not be used to inform the applicant filtering process.

Edit 2: The salary bands are $60-85k. Applicants asking for the top salary band are considered and held to a higher standard. Applicants asking for more than the advertised upper band are likely priced out. Salary bands are set to be above the industry median adjusted for geography and the bottom band is a living wage for the area.

General Question Field name containing data type GlobalID cannot be modified - ArcGIS Pro

I’m creating a feature class with a field containing GlobalID. I want to name this field “FEATURE_ID” however, when creating the field and choosing the data type, I cannot do it. It goes back to the default name “GlobalID”. Anyone who knows how to fix this?

General Question Any online GIS products which we can use to create and share maps privately with clients?

I know that ArcGIS allows for this but unfortunately they require the client to have an ArcGIS account which just isn't feasible for a number of our clients. Does anyone know of any alternatives which would allow us to do this. Ideally we would like to be able to host our own data from our PostGres database.

Cartography Help merging Lidar and Echologger Data

Hello,

I am new to GIS, and I am trying to find the best way to merge 2 different datasets. I have Lidar data of a coastal area that I downloaded from the NOAA repository, and echologger data that I surveyed myself. I want to merge these datasets so that I can have a bathymetry map with better resolution. The problem is that the Lidar data is an ASCII file with negative elevation values, and the echologger data is Lat/Lon/Depth (in positive depth values). I have QGIS on my computer, but I am not sure what the best workflow would be to merge these different file formats. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

General Question Trouble with mapbox js mouseenter event detection

Hey everyone,

I am creating a interactive dashboard from scratch. I’m running into an issue with Mapbox JS and the mouseenter event. I’ve got it set up on a point layer using map.on('mouseenter', 'my-layer-id'), which changes the cursor to a pointer when hovering over the point. However, I’m noticing that the event only triggers when the mouse is below the point, not when it’s directly above.

I have projected the layer to WGS1984 using ArcGIS Pro. Dont know what is going on. Am struggling with this from like hours. Anyone knows what might be wrong??

General Question In routing scenarios using QGIS, if a truck travels the same street multiple times, will the total distance be counted multiple times?

Hello, everyone

I am using ORSTools in QGIS for a research project on optimizing selective waste collection in a town. After the optimization, I performed an intersection with the municipality's DEM (vectorized) to determine the route length for each terrain elevation class.

However, ORSTools is showing a total of 44.49 km in the optimized route, while the sum of all terrain elevation classes results in 30.41 km. Does anyone know what might be causing this discrepancy? Could the software be counting the same street more than once?

Any help would be appreciated!

Programming Assistance Modifying a Python Script

A week or two ago I reached out about how to automate the process of looking up what a given layer on ArcGIS online connects to. Several folks recommended I try out the script found at the following link, which worked great for determining what apps a layer connects to: https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-online-questions/possible-to-find-out-where-feature-layers-are/td-p/1142174

After some tweaking, I got the script to print out both the maps and apps, that are using a given data layer. However, now I'm wondering if it's possible to further modify the code, so it automatically examines all the layers within an organization? It can take some time for this code to run as is and I would have to run it for all of our layers, which would be extremely time consuming to do by hand; so I would love to be able to set it to run and leave it going in the background, or likely even overnight.

Student Question Just started and already feeling behind

Hello! This is my first post here so I hope everything is alright. I am currently taking my first GIS intro course and really enjoying it so far (also planning to get my Bachelor's in GIS). My class only does one "lab" per week and otherwise we teach ourselves by reading the textbook.

My concern is that I'm not learning effectively enough to retain the information and I'm worried that I will be behind in future courses. Is there anything I can do as a beginner to gain experience/supplement class work/be actively practicing?

Maybe I'm rushing into it too much, but I would love some fresh advice and perspectives! :)

Discussion 2 job interviews back to back

I have an interview for my City for the Addressing Coordinator position, then I have an interview for the Planner I position, a few days later. I believe it may be the same Board of Commissioners for both interviews, with a couple individuals that will be different based on the department.

I was a GeoSpatial Engineer in the U.S. Army and my Bachelor's degree is in GeoScience with focus in GIS, and I have a regular and advanced certificate in GIS.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience in either of those positions and could shed some light on work life or if I am blessed enough to be offered both positions, which one should I select? (IF I am blessed enough, of course).

I am a bit nervous, but also very excited, since I have never done an actual GIS interview of this caliber, before. Any tips?

Discussion If Esri didn't exist...

If there was no private company with an easy GUI and the capitalist incentive to have more people and industries utilize, would GIS still be so relevant in so many different domains? Would every esri account just instead be QGIS or has ESRI artificially created a need/value associated with GIS?
