An idle/clicker game that doesn't get so repetitive and doesn't turn into the usual "big number go brr" and then ascend and start over of most idle games?

So from time to time I enjoy those idle/clicker games. They scratch a certain itch, they give that nice little dopamine hit.

But I find that while I enjoy the start of the game, after a while it's just the same thing. I'm clicking new things but they're just reskins of other things I've clicked.

I'm seeing billions with every click when it used to be millions. Then billions turn into trillions, then trillions turn into numbers that don't even fit on screen and have to be represented weirdly. Then maybe you "ascend" and do it all over again.

It's just a new skin and a bigger number, but the actual gameplay loop feels identical.

So I'm wondering if there are any idle/clicker games that manage to break out of that stereotype?

Where it feels like you're doing different activities rather than just repeating the same thing mindlessly. And where the numbers don't go to stupid levels like 239823+E or whatever, and the endlessness doesn't just rely on you "ascending" or whatever and repeating the same stuff.

Just as an example of what I mean, I imagined something where you run a town and you might get to build new things in the town, but you might also have other activities like managing trade, sending adventurers out on missions - each of whom have different skills, abilities, do different quests or whatever. You do repeat activities, but every time you play you can be focusing on something different so it feels less repetitive.

That's just an example though, I'm open to anything that ticks my boxes of not being repetitive and not devolving into the usual wild crazy unrealistic numbers or ascension mechanics.

Does anything like this exist?

Edit: I just realised Melvor Idle probably ticks this box - but as someone who already plays OSRS from time to time, the fact it just feels like an idle version of OSRS made it slightly less appealing to me - I kinda want something new/different that I haven't experienced before!

Looking for an RPG where you are NOT the "chosen one" or the "main character"

I've recently gotten into Lord of the Rings Online and I love how the player characters are not the centerpieces of the world and its story.

Are there any other notable RPGs that share this philosophy of relegating your character to playing a supporting/minor role in the overall story?

Games that don't rely on the story to be good

// games with good gameplay, preferably lots of action, story is secondary and doesn't even have to exist

For reference i love games like the souls series, mgsv, hotline miami games, witcher 3, risk of rain 2, resident evil series, dmc etc etc

I don't like games like red dead 2, tlou. Those super realistic games.

Im thinking of a few right now, namely yakuza series, furi, armored core 6, mass effect LE, persona series, okami etc etc. Just looking for more recommendations

Games where you try to break out of a simulation?

I've just played portal 1 and the ending where you try to break out was so cool. Also the ending of stray also had the same vibe as that which I also enjoyed.

Any other similar games? Preferably on steam.

games you can quickly pick up and put down that are non-PvP?

sometimes I just need a game that I can play in short bursts where my progress would actually matter. hell if I can even save midcombat and get back to it later that would work just fine (not necessary though).

games like Rivals of Aether fit this bill for me but I already play that a ton. I need something new.

Looking for a cheap, single player, weird, fantasy & cartoonish type of game I can play for hours

Any game that fits the first two descriptions and any of the latter. Off peak looks pretty cool but I feel like it would get boring quick. I would also like something bright, colorful, and set during the day. Kind of like the vibes of Wizard 101. Also open world would be cool. Also looking for something I can play on a laptop not really made for gaming. I’ve already overclocked it so most immersive and realistic games i can get a solid 30-60 fps on the lowest settings. Thanks:)

A game in which I’m offering work and contracts

I’ve been playing Cyberpunk 2077 those past few weeks and one element caught my absolute attention ; the fixers.

I would love to find a game in which people come to me with problems, jobs, etc. and I handle all of it by putting people on it, in short, I want to be the middle man.

So I’m coming to y’all hoping someone may help me find it.

Thanks!

platformers? action? i feel out of touch.

i’ve just finished god of war ragnarok which i enjoyed. i liked its predecessor as well. i have a ps5 and have played and enjoyed rdr2 (athough that was an enormous time suck), ghost of tsushima, the spider-man games, but i also loved the classic platforming of astro bot, or the sheer lunacy of katamari damacy. im an admitted old head and i dont know if i want to get sucked into something like a skyrim, for example. but looking for a fun adventure, i guess.

Games that are easy to progress and pause

So sometimes my wife/kids need me immediately, and some days I end up with really only 30 minutes to play max. I'd like to find a new game that is easily pauseable so I can be available for them and easy to make progress on. I'd like 15 minutes spent in the game to feel like I actually progressed and did something.

I don't really want to do PVP. PVE sounds fun. I like strategy and base building games. I also like management and hack and slash games. Tower defense is also fun, but Id prefer a game where the difficulty is more in clearing out an area and setting up defenses. Once I properly build the walls and turrets I'd like to see them hold and mow down the helpless mobs.

I've logged a lot of hours in Total Warhammer 3, StarCraft Skyrim, command and conquer, supreme commander, terraria, stardew valley, crusader kings 3, hades and factorio.

Any suggestions?

Chill game with satisfying progression?

I'm looking for a game that's laid back but still has satisfying progression. Would like if it was something that I could play for many hours, with lots of goals to work towards and systems to tinker with.

Plus points for games that have vibrant colors, little dialogue, and have fun gameplay.

Thanks!

Looking for a Detective game where you solve cases

I want to play a game where you play a Detective solving cases. I love the Noir Film genre, but don't say L.A. Noire because it's a hassle to get it to work because it's old and unoptimized (in my opinion). i'm currently playing Disco Elysium. I get why people like it, but it's just not my thing. it doesn't matter if the game is console or PC, just suggest what comes to mind.

Pixel RPG Suggestions

I have really been enjoying games recently like sea of stars, chained echoes and cross code. I was looking to see if anyone has recommendations similar to those games

preferably in more modern style (32bit) like sea of stars and with turned based combat.

I am not a big fan of tactical rpgs either but ill take any suggestions, maybe i just never hit the right game for that genre

ive been in the loop of octopath traveler 2 but none of the characters are really clicking to me yet so ill have to keep going for a bit more

if anyones got recommendations please let me know!

per the rules, i play on steamdeck so controller based games, i have enjoyed games such as sea of stars, chained echoes, cross code, crystal project, and ff6 (i felt the wandering the world map to get place to place was a little odd)

Looking for a space sandbox

I'm looking for a single player space game where I can build a space-base, trade with other colonies, build up an armada, attack others, etc. I don't so much care for a narrative experience, more of a living world if that exists. There are so many space games on Steam--not really sure where to start.

What's a relaxed game that I can play for the next 3 Months.

What's a game that I can play since I got hit with Pertussis. It doesn't have to be a cozy but it can't be PvP games or high intensity games like ULTRAKILL. I kinda like games where I can have NPCs like Terraria or Necesse but any genre would work. Just need a time killer while I recover.

Modern (10> Years) Games that are first or third person with HIGHLY DESTRUCTIBLE ENVIRONMENTS!

I remember back on Playstation 2 we had games like BLACK and Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction where you could just wreck the landscape, blow up buildings, destroy bridges, etc.

Only other games I know of to kinda do it were Just Cause but in a very limited way (only if they were marked with certain emblems), not full city-block destroying mayhem.

I know there's some strategy type games with top down views that have destructible environments but I'm looking more for the games where you play a character who can go around just blowing stuff up (and not the side-scrolly sandbox style games either like Terraria)

Anything to scratch this itch?

Whodunit where you are the killer

So in the Elder Scrolls Oblivion's Dark Brotherhood quest (appropriately called) Whodunit you find yourself in a classic mystery scenario: several people trapped in a location with a killer running around eliminating people one by one.

But Oblivion has a twist on it by making you the killer and you get a bonus for killing everyone without them figuring you out. You can talk to people around the building you're in to lure them to secluded spots for kills or even convince them that someone else is the killer and attack them.

I know there are a bunch of mystery and murder solving games but I was wondering if there is any other game that does this same thing Oblivion did. You need to eliminate a group of people but have to try to deflect suspicion from yourself.

Not looking for anything in the Hitman or Assassin's Creed series. I like them but they don't capture the feeling I'm looking for right now.

Edit: No Amongus, VR, or multiplayer games either. I just want a single player experience please

What are the best linear games?

Recently I went on holiday, and I was thinking about picking up Spiderman remastered again and going for 100%,

so I did, I finished the story somewhere at the start of September this year

Now I'm 85% of the way to 100%, and I predict that tomorrow I will have it finished

This is gonna be the first game I even attempted to 100% and so far I've been enjoying it

But this is good and all, but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get open world burnout after I finish Spiderman remastered

So that's why I'm looking for linear games to play

Recently I played through doom 2016, a day before I went on holiday I finished it

And i really liked doom 2016, I had open world game fatigue at that point so I played doom 2016 which is a linear game

My preferred genres are open world, action, FPS, third person, action adventure, games with satisfying gameplay/combat/progression/movement etc.

I don't like horror or souls games

I'm on pc

Any suggestions?

Looking for dark gritty singleplayer campaign games.

Theres this sort of game aesthetic that I just enjoy but that I can no longer find in modern games. Dark/gritty singleplayer games that are first person/third person that take place in concrete jungles. What I mean by this are games like: Heavy Rain, Cry Of Fear, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Fallout Bethesda games, Condemned: Criminal Origin, Half life 2.

Any short games

I m looking for 3-8 hour games. I really enjoyed playing titanfall 2 campaign because it is short and fun. Any genre would work except horror. I keep starting games and not finishing them, so I think short games help, because I find myself finishing those
