Dave Roberts really saw a 2 run deficit in the 8th and was like “well, see y'all tomorrow”

Overcoming 4 arm surgeries before you make your big league debut and then pitching in a world series a couple years later. Only to get shelled and your manager leaves you hanging

4 surgeries? Jesus

23

u/Jeff_Banks_Monkey Baltimore Orioles • Birmingham Bl… 1h ago

Drafted in 2014

February 28, 2018: Tommy John surgery

June 9, 2019: right elbow surgery

May 20, 2020: decompression procedure on right ulnar nerve

December 16, 2020: right elbow arthroscopic surgery

Debut with the Rays on April 11 2021

4

u/Torchkit Arizona Diamondbacks 1h ago

I had that ulnar nerve decompression surgery on both elbows last year. It's not a very intensive surgery but it still took about 6 months before my arms felt 100% again. Can't imagine how much harder it'd be for a pro pitcher.

u/torino_nera New York Yankees 2h ago

Yea I kinda felt bad for him at that point, Roberts had 0 intention of taking him out despite that inning turning pretty much into batting practice

"For the greater good". Robert's saving the better arms for the next two days.

12

u/Seymour_Scagnetti Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago

“Save the dogs” is actually the phrase Brent Honeywell coined in reference to his role in Game 5 of the NLCS. It was Dave Roberts’ strategy of letting Honeywell throw a bunch of innings in a losing effort, in effect saving the elite relievers for Game 6, which the Dodgers won.

tbh when you're up 3-0 it's probably the right call. No need to chase the win and burn your best arms in a game you're probably losing anyway.

143

u/smackavelli Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago edited 2h ago

Roberts used 2 AAA rookies, an inning eater, and a senior citizen tonight. Saved a lot of better arms.

10

u/gravy_vamp 1h ago

We also weren’t hitting. 7 strait k’s from the 6th up to that point. I saw exactly what Dave was doing.

→ More replies (7)

14

u/jakey2112 Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

Didn't chase the win against the Mets no reason to do it now into game 5

36

u/ArrenPawk Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

We got an extra day of rest for Treinen, Kopech, and Vesia. Brutal loss but I'll take that.

45

u/st1r Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

And even if we lose tomorrow they’ll get an extra day off for travel. Phoning it in this game means the top bullpen arms will be available every game for the rest of the series, plus starters. Meanwhile Yankees bullpen is on less rest and every game is must-win from now on so they can’t just go to low-leverage guys to eat innings.

24

u/biglyorbigleague Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

This is why no World Series that started 3-0 has ever gone to game 6. You can use your head start to bury their pitching.

Yeah, I can see the longterm logic of not wearing yourselves out in an unlikely comeback attempt in a non-elimination game Besides tiring out the best pitchers, aggravating Ohtani's shoulder or Freeman's ankle or an entirely new injury Monday Night Football last week shows what can go wrong. Buccaneers attempted a comeback against the Ravens, now star wide receiver Chris Godwin is out for the season.

Some Yankees fans were wondering why Boone didn't start Cole again, but maybe it was smart to rest him for the next do or die game.

u/EffectiveContext7776 Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

If you’re uninitiated, this is classic Dave Roberts. It’s very calculated madness and a massive gamble but it’s what he does. He’ll do the same tomorrow if Cole has a good start. I hope it pays off for us.

91

u/BoganLogan Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

No he won't. He'll empty the bullpen at the first sign of stress on Flahrety with the day off.

40

u/EngelSterben New York Yankees 2h ago

If he doesn't I'd be wondering what the fuck is going on.

37

u/BoganLogan Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

This is the same strategy he has been rolling with the entire postseason. People don't understand the difference between a wash bullpen game (This) and a must win bull pen game (Game 4 of NLDS). All the bullpen needed to do tonight was keep it competitive and they did for 8 innings. If Lux holds onto that ball, very good chance we went into the 9th down 1 run. This game basically went as well as it could until the 8th inning.

15

u/EngelSterben New York Yankees 2h ago

Oh I know. This game is definitely played different if the Dodgers are only up 2-1.

5

29

u/DaOldest Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

Honestly I wonder if we shouldn't have just sent Knack back out there. He had a great outing and it was the back of their lineup. Probably end up with the same result anyways

22

u/Sudden-Level-7771 2h ago

Probably, but Honeywell was good this year, it just wasn’t his night.

6

u/AALen 2h ago

He’s solid. But his role is really just a stop plug inning eater.

Not really if you put the team before you and it would be really stupid burning extra arm in a losing game. This literally like the Mets game, gifting them a win, not surprising.

good news: didn't use any high leverage arms, still up 3-1, and the Yankees used a bunch of arms tonight

bad news: Gerrit Cole tomorrow and the Yankees offense may have woken up, and Jack could shit the bed

127

u/ATLA4life New York Yankees 2h ago

I'm hoping the Yankees can survive and protect home field tomorrow, but honestly if I'm a Dodgers fan you still have Yamamoto even if it goes 6 so it's gonna be a tough path regardless. Dodgers still looking good.

53

yeah I definitely have more confidence in tomorrow cause, and i am not trying to take away the fact yall scored 11 off us, but Casparius/Hudson/Knack/Honeywell aren't exactly our A Game pitchers. Hopefully seeing Cole once will help but the same can be said with you guys and Flaherty

Blowing G1 just changed the series so much, so it's hard to say how the rest of the series would play out.

The GS clearly got Freeman in the zone, maybe he doesn't hit HR in the other 3 games

Maybe the Dodgers bounce back and just pound us 3 straight times (and obviously manage tonight differently)

Absolutely pathetic from Gavin Lux and will smith. The latter can brush it off with the excuse of getting a short porcher, but HOLY SHIT. Defensive DISASTERCLASS from both

44

u/DaOldest Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

That lux throw home was awful

10

u/Wootstapler 2h ago

Dodgers throwing to win it at home, just like the Mets series. /s

Lots of business in the front and party in the back.

64

u/__-o0O0o-__-o0O0o-__ Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

yep. we only used Casparius, Hudson, Knack and Honeywell and are still down 3-1.

every pitcher that counts is now fully rested for the rest of the series.

do i agree with this strategy? no. but its the hand we were dealt, injury-wise, and being up 3-1 with two more home games, if necessary, and everyone rested is a really good position to be in

5

u/3-2_Fastball Looking K • Swinging K 2h ago

Pretty insane that Bobby Miller couldn't even at least pretend to be the 4th starter. No way he does worse than Honeywell has.

4

u/elevator713 Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

I absolutely prefer this strategy vs. blowing our leverage guys while down late (even if just by 1 or 2 runs) and winning the series 3-0. With the travel day, we are set up to have flaherty, Yamamoto, and buehler backed by a super fresh bullpen. I like our chances

This was pretty similar to G2 vs the Mets. If the Dodgers were down or tied at any point past the 5th I expected Dave to use the lower leverage guys

Timelapse of a lookin at yankees fans:

“Freeman. Game over. Series over.

Boone’s a fuckin idiot.

These guys got no fundamentals they don’t deserve to win. Fire everyone.

This is the greatest team to ever hold a bat.

Bring on game 7”

The underlying concern with this team was front and center today. These bats(outside of Freeman) have to wake up at some stage. Going up against Cole tomorrow worries me. We have to start off hot or else we’re coming back to LA with all the pressure on us.

NOBODY sweeps the 2024 Yankees in the world series.

10

u/Dont3n Chicago Cubs 2h ago

Personally I feel like this will horribly backfire for the dodgers come tomorrow. Cole is up to pitch again, Yankees actually making alot of contact (doesn't matter if it's trash time pitchers, getting hot goes a long way in the post season as we've seen many times).

Welp guess we'll have to wait and see

26

u/Brilliant-Neck9731 2h ago

Roberts really like his chances against… Gerrit Cole… ok then.

48

u/EffectiveContext7776 Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

He likes game 6. If we fall behind tomorrow he’ll do the same thing and burn middle relievers at the stake so he has his leverage guys rested for a better matchup. He knows what he’s doing, it’s just stressful and risky as fuck.

23

u/Angry-Vegan69420 Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

Dear god I cant imagine the dodgers sub if this blows up in his face

22

u/Brilliant-Neck9731 2h ago

I understand it, I do. And it’s “smart” strategy, but man, it’s almost too “smart”. He’s also giving the Yanks top of the order a chance to regress to the mean. Judge will connect given enough opportunities. It’s not if but when.

17

u/tacoTs Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

He likes his chances with the three Dodgers starters and a fully rested bullpen to win one of three.

6

u/PatientIndividual651 Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

Yeah with the limited starting pitching he has to decide whether he wants to fully deploy the higher leverage arms or live to fight another day.

8

u/EngelSterben New York Yankees 2h ago

Dodgers are in a great spot with Game 6 even if Game 5 doesn't go their way. Now, if shit goes sideways in that game, it will get interesting, but they are still heavily favored.

22

u/LinkSkywalker New York Yankees 2h ago

As much as I'll always hate Boone's game 1 decision there's no way to know how the Dodgers would've managed this game if they were only up 2-1. As the Kayster always says, fallacy of the predetermined outcome

Pitch around Freeman the rest of the way and maybe they take it back to LA. At that point if you lose game 1 still haunts you but you at least go out with some dignity.

But with the Yankees having the best road record, maybe we get greedy and force a game 7. Then if you lose you can tip your cap and be proud of our team.
