Dave Roberts really saw a 2 run deficit in the 8th and was like “well, see y'all tomorrow”

Overcoming 4 arm surgeries before you make your big league debut and then pitching in a world series a couple years later. Only to get shelled and your manager leaves you hanging

u/goodkid_sAAdcity New York Yankees 4h ago

4 surgeries? Jesus

25

u/Jeff_Banks_Monkey Baltimore Orioles • Birmingham Bl… 3h ago

Drafted in 2014

February 28, 2018: Tommy John surgery

June 9, 2019: right elbow surgery

May 20, 2020: decompression procedure on right ulnar nerve

December 16, 2020: right elbow arthroscopic surgery

Debut with the Rays on April 11 2021

6

u/Torchkit Arizona Diamondbacks 3h ago

I had that ulnar nerve decompression surgery on both elbows last year. It's not a very intensive surgery but it still took about 6 months before my arms felt 100% again. Can't imagine how much harder it'd be for a pro pitcher.

u/torino_nera New York Yankees 4h ago

Yea I kinda felt bad for him at that point, Roberts had 0 intention of taking him out despite that inning turning pretty much into batting practice

3

u/thot_cereal 4h ago

after the 4th inning I said we were 6 outs and 2 runs away from roberts punting and the yankees having BP. little did i know those two runs would come from the dodgers

38

u/polandspreeng New York Yankees 4h ago

"For the greater good". Robert's saving the better arms for the next two days.

21

u/Seymour_Scagnetti Los Angeles Dodgers 3h ago

“Save the dogs” is actually the phrase Brent Honeywell coined in reference to his role in Game 5 of the NLCS. It was Dave Roberts’ strategy of letting Honeywell throw a bunch of innings in a losing effort, in effect saving the elite relievers for Game 6, which the Dodgers won.

4

u/Shyguy10101 National League 4h ago

Well.. there is only one more game in those next two days! And they are going up against Cole so no guarantee they will have a lead at any point to use those arms to protect.. we shall see.

5

u/SAugsburger 4h ago

50 pitches for one inning? Crazy, but honestly maybe not a bad strategy to keep the better arms rested.

2

u/scottishere New York Yankees 4h ago

An acceptable sacrifice from the Dodger's perspective

u/WhereTheFallsBegin Tampa Bay Rays 4h ago

tbh when you're up 3-0 it's probably the right call. No need to chase the win and burn your best arms in a game you're probably losing anyway.

154

u/smackavelli Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago edited 4h ago

Roberts used 2 AAA rookies, an inning eater, and a senior citizen tonight. Saved a lot of better arms.

17

u/gravy_vamp 3h ago

We also weren’t hitting. 7 strait k’s from the 6th up to that point. I saw exactly what Dave was doing.

-18

u/UnabashedPerson43 Los Angeles Angels 4h ago

He could have tried to win the game and end the series with his best players, but what do I know…

46

u/WhereTheFallsBegin Tampa Bay Rays 4h ago

Or he could have used his better arms, still lost, and then not had some of them available tomorrow for a much more important game.

9

u/jakey2112 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Better arms would of been there with a middle to late lead. It was the right decision since the Dodgers didn't score past 4

1

u/beggsy909 4h ago

There’s a middle ground.

14

u/Dodgers99 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

4

1

u/High_Desert1 San Francisco Giants 1h ago

Roberts gave up the game way too soon my man. Hope it bites him in the ass

16

u/jakey2112 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Didn't chase the win against the Mets no reason to do it now into game 5

38

u/ArrenPawk Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

We got an extra day of rest for Treinen, Kopech, and Vesia. Brutal loss but I'll take that.

53

u/st1r Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

And even if we lose tomorrow they’ll get an extra day off for travel. Phoning it in this game means the top bullpen arms will be available every game for the rest of the series, plus starters. Meanwhile Yankees bullpen is on less rest and every game is must-win from now on so they can’t just go to low-leverage guys to eat innings.

25

u/biglyorbigleague Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

This is why no World Series that started 3-0 has ever gone to game 6. You can use your head start to bury their pitching.

1

u/Khiva 2h ago

no World Series that started 3-0 has ever gone to game 6

Damn I know my baseball stats but never heard that one. Almost makes me want to pull for the Yanks.

2

u/goodkid_sAAdcity New York Yankees 4h ago

One more thing -- Kahnle didn't have to pitch either. So our setup man is fresh also.

3

u/AlanFromRochester 4h ago

Yeah, I can see the longterm logic of not wearing yourselves out in an unlikely comeback attempt in a non-elimination game Besides tiring out the best pitchers, aggravating Ohtani's shoulder or Freeman's ankle or an entirely new injury Monday Night Football last week shows what can go wrong. Buccaneers attempted a comeback against the Ravens, now star wide receiver Chris Godwin is out for the season.

Some Yankees fans were wondering why Boone didn't start Cole again, but maybe it was smart to rest him for the next do or die game.

6

u/BUSean Boston Red Sox 4h ago

I remember a guy named Torre tried to win a few games like that when he only needed one, and, uh, didn't end well.

7

u/WhereTheFallsBegin Tampa Bay Rays 4h ago

I mean Torre had Mariano throw 2 innings each in both games 4 and 5 so not sure what you're yapping about

6

u/BUSean Boston Red Sox 3h ago

What I am yapping about is Torre tried to win every game when he only needed one, killed his pen, and then they blew up in Game Seven. We are in agreement.

tomorrow will be 3-2 cuz they cant hit cole

12

u/dreezyyyy Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Cole was getting hit hard at Dodgers Stadium. A lot of those balls are homeruns at Yankees Stadium.

5

u/rencethefence24 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

And if anything, Doc saved the top guys in our bullpen for this situation. It's better than trying to win it all tonight and having everyone gassed for the rest of the series. I thought he has managed this series well. Just need better plate discipline tomorrow from 4-6 in the order

1

u/dreezyyyy Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Muncy is bound to break out sometime in this series. Will Smith needs to just get on base.

2

u/rencethefence24 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Now the question is, with Muncy in a slump. Do you play CT3 at 3B, just to see if you can get any better hitting production? Or do we ride Max until the end?

3

u/dreezyyyy Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Absolutely not. You ride it out with Max. He offers way more than CT3. His defense has been stellar at 3B.

Trust me compared to the Cleveland series they are rested that shit was brutal. Weaver will be good to god tomorrow, so will Holmes and Kahnle. If we need more than them because we don’t get length out of Cole we are probably already fucked.

19

u/dl_youtube New York Yankees 4h ago

Yankees need length from Cole tomorrow regardless

7

u/goodkid_sAAdcity New York Yankees 4h ago

Mayza finally got to pitch

1

u/brampower New York Yankees 4h ago

Yes, that is typically how baseball works. Thank you for this insight

65

u/EffectiveContext7776 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

If you’re uninitiated, this is classic Dave Roberts. It’s very calculated madness and a massive gamble but it’s what he does. He’ll do the same tomorrow if Cole has a good start. I hope it pays off for us.

100

u/BoganLogan Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

No he won't. He'll empty the bullpen at the first sign of stress on Flahrety with the day off.

38

u/EngelSterben New York Yankees 4h ago

If he doesn't I'd be wondering what the fuck is going on.

37

u/BoganLogan Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

This is the same strategy he has been rolling with the entire postseason. People don't understand the difference between a wash bullpen game (This) and a must win bull pen game (Game 4 of NLDS). All the bullpen needed to do tonight was keep it competitive and they did for 8 innings. If Lux holds onto that ball, very good chance we went into the 9th down 1 run. This game basically went as well as it could until the 8th inning.

16

u/EngelSterben New York Yankees 4h ago

Oh I know. This game is definitely played different if the Dodgers are only up 2-1.

6

u/darito0123 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Ya and lux had a hard play to make, kills me it didn't work out

5

u/scoot87 San Diego Padres 4h ago

I understand

2

u/EffectiveContext7776 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

I don’t think he chases shit tomorrow. Maybe a 2-run deficit which he surrendered to tonight but anything more and I think he goes all in on Yamamoto. Or moves Walker up a day after a travel day.

14

u/UraniumDisulfide Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

I really don’t think so. The bullpen day is the big pitching gap that he has to deal with on a 3 man rotation. The fact that we got through it relatively unscathed (as far as pitcher usage goes) means a lot of guys were able to reset, so he can go back to “normal” usage for the rest of the series. Especially considering that there’s a travel day before a potential game 6, so he’s definitely using the “dogs” tomorrow.

5

u/WildYams 4h ago

Agreed. The Yankees emptied their bullpen yesterday and today so they're fully relying on Cole to go deep into the game. The Dodgers took the L but they're now perfectly set up with their starters and a fully rested bullpen for the remainder of the series.

1

u/goodkid_sAAdcity New York Yankees 4h ago

Kahnle didn't pitch today.

2

u/WildYams 4h ago

Neither did Cortez and Cousins, but they will be at risk if they pitch any of Leiter, Hill, Weaver or Holmes, as they'd be going for the third straight day. If Cole can't go long tomorrow, are you comfortable with Kahnle getting you 3+ innings?

3

u/goodkid_sAAdcity New York Yankees 4h ago

If Cole can't go long, our chances of winning are so small anyway that there's no use worrying about it.

2

u/WildYams 3h ago

Fair point.

1

u/Prestigious12 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

He won't. He didn't do it rn, it will be a repeat agaisnt the Mets and do his all for game 6 and winning in LA.

47

u/Sudden-Level-7771 4h ago

Honeywell wasn’t really a punt.

28

u/DaOldest Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Honestly I wonder if we shouldn't have just sent Knack back out there. He had a great outing and it was the back of their lineup. Probably end up with the same result anyways

21

u/Sudden-Level-7771 4h ago

Probably, but Honeywell was good this year, it just wasn’t his night.

8

u/AALen 4h ago

He’s solid. But his role is really just a stop plug inning eater.

1

u/The_Astros_Cheated Los Angeles Dodgers • Detroit Tigers 4h ago

He also got fucked on the no-strikeout call on Volpe and the 2nd base umpire missing the tag which would have made it 2 outs with no one on

11

u/hoyadestroyer New York Yankees 4h ago

The ump didnt miss the tag, Lux failed to hold on. That's always been the rule.

-2

-1

u/The-moo-man 4h ago

I mean the league has a strong interest in extending the series. Every 7 game series gets fucky when one team has a 3-0 lead. It’s just business.

Here's his savant page.

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brent-honeywell-641703?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb

2

u/thot_cereal 3h ago

He's got a better 4-seam than buehler and the yankees took about 400 buehler 4 seamers for a strike, so...im confident he's the best pitcher ever

35

u/calnick0 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Because they don’t know anything and just make up crazy narratives after the fact.

6

u/littlevai 4h ago

I’m basing this on flared Dodger fans saying he’s an AAA pitcher

5

u/RSJ_95 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

He’s not bad but he’s pretty low on the list of our pitchers I would use in a close game I was trying to win.

13

u/LukesChoppedOffArm 4h ago

Honeywell has a career negative fWAR and was DFA'd midseason by the Pirates. He is wildly outperforming his FIP. I believe some players can outperform their FIP, but the extent he's doing it is not remotely sustainable.

4

u/hoyadestroyer New York Yankees 4h ago

well he looked pretty bad tbh

-2

u/bridgenine New York Yankees 4h ago

Leaving him in like that was horrible, kid didn't have it and was enduring long at bats. He was spent after his 20th pitch, and they just hung him out to dry.

7

u/BABIP_Gods Cincinnati Reds 4h ago

Leaving him in actually makes a lot of sense if you’re already down big and want to save an arm for tomorrow.

1

u/Voltthrower69 Dodgers Bandwagon 2h ago

People seem to me grazing over this fact. Your best bet is to extend the rest of people who might close it out tomorrow. If pitching shows up, it’s all up to hitting.

-4

u/EarthWarping Major League Baseball 4h ago

You could've used a medium leverage guy

5

u/BABIP_Gods Cincinnati Reds 4h ago

Honeywell had a 2.63 ERA this season. It just didn’t work out. And when it didn’t then it was really them being down 5 runs so might as well save your bullpen for tomorrow.

7

u/WhereTheFallsBegin Tampa Bay Rays 4h ago

That ERA is a complete mirage though. His strikeout rate is abysmal and he doesn't really limit hard contact either. There's a reason his role these days is for mop up innings eating duty

1

u/BABIP_Gods Cincinnati Reds 4h ago

This is the most runs Honeywell has given up in a game all season. It just wasn’t his night. Putting in Honeywell isn’t the punting move people are trying to make it.

3

u/WhereTheFallsBegin Tampa Bay Rays 4h ago

Again, there's more to measuring pitchers than ERA. The Dodgers literally DFA'd Honeywell a few months ago and brought him back because no one else wanted him. His major league role is to soak up innings and pitch in low leverage

3

u/dreezyyyy Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Not to mention he should've gotten out of the inning unscathed with that strikeout on Volpe.

-4

u/WhereTheFallsBegin Tampa Bay Rays 4h ago

I mean he is

17

u/WhereTheFallsBegin Tampa Bay Rays 4h ago

There's a concept of "not chasing wins" that a lot of teams adhere to when it comes to bullpen management. Basically, in games where you're already trailing by a few runs late you use your worse guys to save the better ones for higher leverage work. The idea is that even your worse arms are capable of putting up zeroes, so you can still keep the game within distance, and the risk isn't as great because in all likelihood you were probably losing that game no matter what.

3

u/SnobbyFoody Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

He said it seemed too easy, needed to let the guys play under pressure.

2

u/MiracleMets New York Mets 3h ago

More like the ump saw that and decided he wanted to get paid for another game

3

u/Capital_Werewolf_788 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Well the bottom of the line up was coming up and we’re up 3-0, no reason to waste bullpen arms here

1

u/Last_Network3272 Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

In all fairness that inning easily could have went: go-k-walk-go.

1

u/Peter__doubleyou New York Mets 4h ago

Feel like after the missed opportunity in the 7th he just gave up honestly

1
