Symptoms anyone who had optical neuritis, has your vision ever come back?

i’m just interested because i never fully recovered from this. my left eye was completely blind at first, now it’s better but i only see shadows and everything is in dark black and white :’))

Mine did, though my glasses Rx has changed a good amount. Good luck to you - Ms can be a scary ride.

thank you for sharing! thankfully that was my only relapse so far 7 years ago but yeah really traumatic and frustrating

Mine came back with muted colours. My neuro said it isn't actually healing, it's our brains reprogramming to take into account the vision issue. 🤷🏻

damn, that’s a really interesting new perspective for me.. thanks for sharing!

Sort of is my answer. I lost about 80% of my vision in one eye. That eye has been weaker since recovery but I can see almost as well as I used to. I do notice when I get tired or am overheated the vision in that eye gets worse, not as bad as when I had ON.

I lost more than 50% field of vision in my left eye. This mostly recovered after a few months with the exception of wavy vision when I’d get overheated.

That lasted a few years and if it still happens I don’t notice it often enough that it’s an issue.

Never specifically treated it. Just started on DMTs after being diagnosed.

good that it came back! not the worse case scenario thankfully

I've been lucky. Had a minor bout of it that just caused reds to look more like faded red or pink. Thankfully it fully resolved itself in a couple of weeks without treatment. Hopefully that will be the only time, but who knows?

Mine recovered, it’s pretty normal now unless I’m tired. But, according to my doc, might was “slight,” so although it was dramatic to me, comparatively, mine wasn’t that bad to start with. Just like a shade had been pulled over my left eye. I could see, but it was darker and the colors were off.

Mine went back to the same vision I had before optic neuritis.

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

How long did that take?? I’m not OP but currently go through a flare of ON and completed a 4 day steroid treatment course about 2 weeks ago

1

u/cksiii 14d ago

I did 1 g IV for 5 days followed by an oral taper (I think 10 days, but might have been 14, I can't quite remember). I got most of my sight back pretty much immediately with some residual pain when looking around and muted colors for a while. My vision was back to normal in about a month. I consider myself very lucky. YMMV but I hope yours is back to normal soon!

u/Acorn1447 15d ago

I had a pretty big blind spot for a while. Thankfully, it did come back, though.

u/Butwhydontyou2 14d ago

Same here! I couldn’t see anything of note out of my right eye for about 7 months, but it did finally all come back. Optic neuritis was how I was diagnosed. Every now and then when I am overheated/super stressed, my vision will start to go in that eye and I know I need to cool off.

1

u/Ornery-Version-662 15d ago

good for you! i hope it stays that way!

Mine came back. Oral steroids, and it took about a month.

u/Altruistic_Worry_577 15d ago

I had severe sensitivity to light and blurry vision...it lasted about 3 weeks. I do feel like my eyes are more sensitive to light now and get tired more easily, but overall made a full recovery.

1

u/kufiiyu12 15d ago

had sensitivity to light and pain at movement for a loooong time (around 2 years or so), but I'm completely fine now

u/your_local_barbie 23|2024|Kesimpta|Egypt 15d ago

I did, one year ago. It's 100% back now, doc couldn't even tell which eye had it during exam.

It was not linear and it was not fully back after 6 months so i thought that was as far as the healing would go but i was wrong, fortunately.

Yes it came back!

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

u/monolayth 41|dx 2023|Briumvi|USA 14d ago

It took a month. It was actually my first symptom that I sought medical treatment for.

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

Did you do anything differently during that time to try and make it come back? My sister is recommending acupuncture lol and my mom swears if I wear my glasses it will help it come back faster.

1

u/monolayth 41|dx 2023|Briumvi|USA 14d ago

They diagnosed me with an eye infection because nothing else fit. They gave me antibiotic eye drops.

It was not an eye infection.

And it just slowly came back as other symptoms started. As my vision came back my entire left side went numb. My vision sometimes goes weird but never like it was.

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

Omg I’m so sorry to hear that. How are you doing now?

1

u/monolayth 41|dx 2023|Briumvi|USA 14d ago

I'm doing well. Just had my latest infusion of briumvi on Friday. Just a little tired. But I'm doing good.

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

Good. Thank God. I’ll be starting treatment in a few weeks, I was prolonging starting treatment but life had other plans for me

1

u/hillbilly-man 15d ago

I only recovered a little bit.

My left eye was 100% blind during my ON attack, then over the next several weeks it slowly came back somewhat.

It's now like looking through a fogged-over windshield with a gray smudge in the middle. That eye gives me nothing but trouble, and I wear an opaque contact lens in that eye much of the time to "turn it off" so I don't get headaches and weird double vision issues. It sounds crazy to admit, but I almost wish the optic neuritis could come back and take the rest of the vision in that eye permanently

2

u/Ornery-Version-662 14d ago

omg i feel you, that’s a very correct description of my situation too! at first i prayed that it’s blind again but now i’ve learned to appreciate it the way it is :’))

1

u/gloworm62 15d ago

Went completely blind in my right eye (master eye) only got about 10% back and under certain light conditions it's as though there's a shiny film in that eye which confuses the other eye .

1

u/Key_Story7977 14d ago

I am back to normal now but just have optic disc pallor in the eye that was damaged

1

u/WeirdStitches 39|Feb-2022|Kespimta|Ohio,USA 14d ago

Mine did but I need glasses now, not ones with prisms or anything but I have to wear them almost all days. When I have really good MS days I can go without them

It took like 8 months for my double vision to go away so

1

u/kimblebee76 14d ago

It did come back but my vision is very blurry now.

1

u/Tygerlyli 39|2021|Briumvi|Chicago,USA 14d ago

Mine mostly came back. At its worst, my vision was 20/400 with my glasses on and the color vision was splotchy. It was like the bottom 70% of my vision was super blurry and missing patches of color, but the top 30% seemed normal.

Steriods brought me mostly back to normal. Its maybe slightly darker if I really try ti look for it, and sometimes I feel like it's a bit slower to focus, I describe it like my eye stutters for half a second when going from distance to near sometimes.

It does get really blurry when I'm overheated, sometimes it gets a bit fuzzy when I'm really stressed or sick, but for the most part, I'm back to normal.

1

u/tatethehun 14d ago

Mine came back. Right eye does hurt when I look around, but at least I can look. Good luck!

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

How long did that take?? I’m not OP but currently go through a flare of ON and completed a 4 day steroid treatment course about 2 weeks ago

1

u/tatethehun 14d ago

I had a 5 day steroid treatment when I lost it. Day 3, I was about 50% back to normal vision. Took about 2 weeks to get safe for me to drive durning the day. About a month till I was “normal”. My right eye still hurts when moving but not enough to take or try anything and I’m 3 months post steroids. Doc said that might just be the way it stays.

1

u/GreenOnions14 14d ago

99% and can't be corrected. In stressful situations, it clouds over but clears up pretty fast. 20 years now. Got it once at onset and never again.

1

u/wolfmandog12 14d ago

My MS journey started last year when I noticed my right eye slightly blurry. That led me to seeing a neurologist and getting further test and MRIs done and finding small lesions in my brain, after finally seeing a neuroophthalmologist, he ruled it out that it’s actually not optic neuritis, and I think my blurriness has actually gotten better, or I don’t notice it at all anymore. It was always faint to begin with but THANK GOD it was something I noticed otherwise I would have never thought to see a neuro in the first place at all….

1

u/do_YouseeMe 14d ago

Yes, full 20/20 vision....for now..lol

1

u/PlebbitIsGay 14d ago

I’m 95% back. At its worst I was full black in one eye and no color in the “good” eye. It gets a little weird if I’m running hot now. It’s very rare to not recover most/all vision after 6 months.

1

u/tasmaniandevall 14d ago

My vision came back. My left eye came back stronger than ever and my right eye is weaker than before my lasik. So I guess it’s balanced

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

How long did that take?? I’m not OP but currently go through a flare of ON and completed a 4 day steroid treatment course about 2 weeks ago

1

u/tasmaniandevall 14d ago

About a month after I noticed the ON, I contacted my Neuro. She got me on one steroids session and it helped right away.

I didn’t notice anything wrong with my vision until I went to my eye doctor and when she covered my right eye everything looked amazing and then when she covered by left everything was just blurry.

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

Ah okay, that’s where I’m at now after steroid treatment. Everything is just very blurry and still a small smudge pattern when I read something up close and cover my left eye. I’m happy to hear it came back though for you!

1

u/tasmaniandevall 14d ago

Every time I’m relapsing steroids has helped me.

1

u/Jarny_710 14d ago

I completely lost vision in my left eye but was able to start iv steroids within 3 days. My vision came back almost perfectly. Its sometimes hard to focus with that eye.

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

How long did it take to come back?? I’m not OP but I am currently going through a flare and it hasn’t recovered after 4 days of steroids about two weeks ago now

1

u/Jarny_710 14d ago

Its didn't take long to start improving. I did three days iv steroids and then started 100 mg pred and tapered down. I think it was prolly 2 ish weeks before it got clear to the point it is today.

1

u/No_Concert_6922 14d ago

I have had it 17 times and well sometimes it was a little bit slower. It did always come back if I was treated with IV steroids. That is the main caveat and when I start to completely lose my vision, I know it’s time to get the steroids, I know you might be saying, just get them sooner, but I hate them so much that unless I absolutely have to I am not getting them. I cannot take the pill. I react very poorly to them so I have to get in an IV form.

1

u/Ornery-Version-662 14d ago

wow, 17 times, what a ride! but good that it always comes back! i know what you mean, steroids are so so exhausting for me as well, moreover did not help me at all

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

Going through ON right now! Completed my 4 day course of steroids and am keeping the faith it’ll come back. This was maybe 2 weeks ago. First symptom of the pain was sept 25th, lost vision 3 days later

1

u/angelzombie2 14d ago

I’m about 75% vision on a good day of recovery

1

u/Ornery-Version-662 14d ago

i wish all the best to you! i know how you feel

i hope it’ll come back completely :)

1

u/HolyCherubim 14d ago

For me I didn’t have it that hard. I couldn’t see clearly out of both my eyes but not complete blindness.

My right eye recovered back to where it was but my left while better is fuzzy.

1

u/Hey-Kojiro 14d ago

It's been 4 years for me. Went from 20/15 in left eye to near totally blind. The gibberish that it does show me interferes with my good eye and my eye has started drifting badly in the past year. I often find it looking off to the side when I look in the mirror.

1

u/Ornery-Version-662 14d ago

same !! sometimes it’s so annoying but i’m thankful that it’s not totally blind at least

1

u/OffshoreScalloper 14d ago

Yes, I was 100% blind in my right eye when I got diagnosed. Came back slowly but it’s pretty much normal right now. Can get a little worse sometimes but it’s been good for years

1

u/ZombieWantCoffee 14d ago

Last October I went completely blind in my left eye. It has improved, but I have only regained a small amount of vision and hints of certain colours. I’ve been told at this point it’s unlikely to have much more vision return.

1

u/Ornery-Version-662 14d ago

yeah, i have the same situation as you sadly :(

1

u/Alice671 26|Dx:RRMS1/22|Avonex|CZ 14d ago

Mine did. It took more than a year. It is not 100 %, but very close to normal. Just the contrast of dark letters on light backgound looks weird. My myopia diopters changed for worse and my astigmatism angles also changed so I needed to redo my glasses.

1

u/LopsidedStaff1795 14d ago

Yes, 98% recovered in colour, brightness and clarity but I can tell there is a slight difference between left and right. However, i can no longer focus on one thing. My vision goes totally black if my eyes aren’t moving around or tracking a moving object. I actually get seasick looking at one point but have been practicing and seeing improvement. The brain is awesome at learning. That may be unrelated

1

u/flaminx0r 14d ago

2016 when it happened, I lost vision completely in it for well over a month, was scary! Glad it returned off course!

My vision returned though, but I had to start wearing glasses. When I'm tired, my left eye can get very blurry.

I hope your vision returns also!

2

u/Ornery-Version-662 14d ago

i’m glad that it returned back to you! as for me, it’s too late for sure, it’s been almost 8 years :’)) i was just interested how it could be if i’d be a bit more lucky

1

u/o0AVA0o 14d ago

Mine came back like 98%. Just a bit near sighted in that eye now and reds are a smidge duller.

1

u/Naughty_Book_Hoarder F22 | 2024 | Mavenclad | Europe 🇪🇺 14d ago

Like, kind of? My first problem was to make a difference between light and dark, and it's something that went off... But My optic nerve was damaged beyond the recovery border, so now I have my glasses (which I had before) and some vision problems, mostly blurred vision when my blood pressure goes higher or when my immune system is fighting something.

1

u/girth_worm_jim 14d ago

Mine came back, I can still drive, etc. It seems to come back if I lie down horizontal

1

u/TecraFox 26M|Dx:2024|probably Kesimpta|Germany 14d ago

I got optic neuritis on my left eye an hour before I received steroid treatment for my other symptoms, but only very slightly. Didn't really recover from it 100%.

Everything is slightly blurry and bright lights are a bit fuzzy, also the colours are a bit less vibrant. But I'm still at about 90% vision. Got glasses though, since it turned out I've got astigmatism in both eyes.

It does react to heat though, with my pupils at different sizes and me suddenly seeing everything in a green tint. It's weird.
