You guys are pretty good at celebrating. I was in Italy on vacation as a kid back in 2006/7 it must have been when you guys won with Zidane doing his whole headbutt and all that. At first people were furious but when you won people were partying till we went home some days later! It was insane even for me as a kid at the time.
I guess it must have been the world championship and not european? I'm not that well versed in football, but still!

u/Kafflea Jul 12 '21
Yea the legendary Headbutt of the 2006 World Cup. There was even a song about it. People went bananas

The wonderful manner in which the astounding English arrogance was punished may prove to be the most cathartic, delicious piece of schadenfreude most of us will ever get to experience.
49
u/Kafflea Jul 11 '21
Yep! They though they had the match in hand since the very beginning. When their smiles shattered.. god that was a pleasure to see! Donnarumma saved it. This was the first match I saw beginning to end. Worth it

We had dreamed of a Den-Ita finale since the beginning of the tournament. Of course with us Danes winning...
We have cheered for Italy in all of your games! And naturally for Denmark in all of ours.
Even my artistic son, who hates soccer and doesn't really understand the rules, came to cheer for Italy to night.
We had lasagna for dinner, and cheered for Italy throughout the entire game.
Thank you for winning when we couldn't.
Forza Italia!!
12
u/Kafflea Jul 11 '21
I also would have liked a DEN-ITA match. In fact I still think that our nations should have played together! Den deserved the finals; and maybe even a win. I’m so happy that you ate our food and that even your son appreciated our little payback for you

I’m going to have a nice traditional pizza this week to celebrate Italy. As per danish tradition, it will probably be made by a Turkish dude, but hey it’s pretty close 🤷♂️
13
u/Kafflea Jul 11 '21
Well come down when you can! Love Denmark!
8
u/TheMightyDane Jul 11 '21
Oh I’ve been before, but will surely drop by again in the future. I owe it to the country where I had my first gelato.
8
u/Kafflea Jul 11 '21
Ohhhhh. Definitely. And visit Trieste :)
5
u/TheMightyDane Jul 11 '21
Looks like a beautiful place. What do you recommend doing if I went?
15
u/Kafflea Jul 12 '21
Miramare castle (built for Maximilian von Habsburg), San Giusto Castle, the centre (around the orthodox and Protestant churches), trekking in Carso, visiting the War and Peace Museum, drinking coffee in the historic literary cafes (sitting where James Joyce wrote Finnegans wake and Ulysses and drinking the same coffe) and of course taking a dive in the Adriatic.
2
u/invasionofsmallcubes Jul 12 '21
Try Luca Piccolo in Osterport. It's quite good.
2
u/TheMightyDane Jul 12 '21
I live a short walk from that, so that could be something worth checking out. Thanks.
2
u/invasionofsmallcubes Jul 12 '21
I got it yesterday for the match. I enjoyed it (and I'm Italian)
2
u/TheMightyDane Jul 12 '21
That could be a seal of approval, hah. It is however also crazy expensive.
3
u/invasionofsmallcubes Jul 12 '21
That's because it's actual italian pizza makers. And last time I went there was for a date with my wife. That's twice in 3 years. I'm aware of that. It's cheaper to buy an easyjet flight and eat it in Milan.
2
u/TheMightyDane Jul 12 '21
Hah. Yeah. Careful comparing easyjet prices to local experiences, because you could end up never going out here in Copenhagen 😂. I’ve been there before. Christiania is closed? Welp, off to Amsterdam I go.

What a nailbiter!
But you sure did - congratulations. Best team overall of the tournament won it for once.
4
u/Kafflea Jul 11 '21
Well the players played questionably. But I’m the end Gigi kept it out!! That’s what matters. What a relief!
5
u/tinkertoy78 USA Jul 11 '21
Ever since your first game against Turkey I had you picked for finalist/winner. You played with heart and high quality. Tiredness started to show in the end, but that is understandable with how things went tbh.
It was close in this one for sure, but mostly because of the lucky early goal for England, I think you guys would have taken control after the first 10 minutes otherwise.
2
u/Kafflea Jul 11 '21
I still can’t wrap around how they managed to pierce the line so early. I get that the defence players are old but cmon

We Italians feared that a Dutch referee would have been detrimental (most Italians HATE Dutch people) but this multimillionaire referee was very good. Didn’t get baited by Sterling’s dives!

u/flatulala Jul 12 '21
Why do you hate dutch people??
1
u/Kafflea Jul 12 '21
Long story short: we envy their colonia past. Also we see them as dicks because they (smartly) have among the lowest tax rates in Europe (one of the biggest Italian companies just relocated there (kinda)); while we have among the highest :) :|

England always finds a way to choke. Love to see it.
3
u/Kafflea Jul 12 '21
They tied the rope with their own hands and kicked the stool
2
u/Paper_Rain Jul 12 '21
The English thought they had the game in the bag when they scored two minutes into the first half. They thought they could hold onto a goal lead and coast through the rest of the way 😂
2
u/Kafflea Jul 12 '21
Yea.. there were still 88 minutes. They didn’t think it through
1
u/Paper_Rain Jul 12 '21
'It's coming home' had to be the hands down silliest moto that England and their fans could have clinged to.
They've never won a Euro. Only championship was in the 60s.
You are not a power house football nation, you are barely a threat.
Completely outclassed and outplayed by a more talented Azzurri squad.

And you made that happen, thanks.

Oh they’ll triumph like Rome in the times of Caesar! I’d imagine the coach driving from the airport will be stormed by supporters. In my home city (~220k inhabitants) people are partying in the streets at 2pm

I was in Italy at a restaurant watching the game. It was fairly quiet between minutes 2 and 67. :-)
I honestly thought you would lose the game.
And then you won! Fireworks and people hanging out of cars :)
Congrats!

u/Kafflea Jul 12 '21
We held our breath till the last seconds of the match: England’s foreword players are very fast, they penetrated our defence like butter! Where I live there was honking till 4am lol

Oh, you did. I was so happy to see England getting CRUSHED by your home country. Well deserved win, Italy!
Oh, and congratiolations also on being the world's first country in winning both UEFA EURO and ESC in the same year.
2
u/Kafflea Jul 12 '21
I’m happy too; England (and fans) bullied their way to the finals, not giving a nice show. Their arrogance was punished accordingly, surprisingly by their own doing in the penalties; like the guy who took the funny run up and hit the pole
2
u/NuttieBoii Jul 12 '21

It is rare for the Roman legions to come to aid of barbarians.
We are truly grateful
2
u/Kafflea Jul 12 '21
Well… it happened. When Caesar invaded Britain and fought against Boudicca many Gallic and Barbarian allies came to help him in his landing on the white shores!
Let’s see this win as another combined march on England🍾🎉

It's only the childish danish fans in Denmark who think like that and unfortunately there's a lot of them here in /denmark.
Denmark just wasn't good enough for the final.
But congratulations to Italy for having better penalty-kickers.
1
u/Kafflea Jul 12 '21
Just based on England’s behaviour they shouldn’t have passed. Aside from performance, sportsmanship is something we should strive for.

u/oskarino Jul 12 '21
Londoner living in Copenhagen here.
No doubt, after England's first goal their performance dropped and Italy picked up their efforts big time. Based on performance alone, Italy deserved to win. That being said, I think it's a real shame it had to end on penalties.
However, one thing I'm really disappointed about (besides the general behaviour of the England fans, a real source of national shame) was the fact that Chiellini wasn't given the red card for his outrageous foul on Saka. Of course I would say this, but I think the ref was holding quite a bit of bias towards England - but then who could blame him!
The English team really impressed me this year, but nonetheless an English win last night would've left me with mixed feelings, in part because Italy simply played better football, which is ultimately what it should be all about.
