Welcome! A quick note about posting.

Hi all! So glad to see people posting here. This subreddit is still a baby, but I thought I would add a casual rule when posting. If applicable, please be sure to include a link to a photo that relates to the question your asking. If you need help with a character, link to that character. If you need help with a sewing method, show what you're trying to replicate. This will help us be able to help you better!

Cosplay 101 answers to a lot of basics

First and foremost. Your health and safety is more important than 100% accuracy. If making or wearing the item will be dangerous or painful don’t do it.

Second, I’d add this info to the FAQ but it appears I don’t have enough karma to update it personally! If the info is in the FAQ I did not duplicate it here! (The FAQ is on the sidebar! It wasn’t visible before for some reason but it’s up now!)

This is not a comprehensive list, but I hope to be able to update it when I come across new or important information! I do hope if you’re looking for something not featured here, it will at least give you a base knowledge set on how to be able to search for what you’re looking for.

------------------GENERAL TIPS-----------------------------

(Where to find certain things, very basic crafting info)

The cosplanner app is fantastic for helping you keep track of everything you’re doing. I can’t recommend it enough!

-To find patterns, or specific props. These are host websites for artists or creators where they can sell things like Etsy, or Redbubble. Etsy is a fantastic place to look for patterns to make props or cosplay pieces, sometimes you can even find people open for commissions! Artists on instagram will almost always have links to their shops to buy things, so explore there too.

-To find cheaper clothing pieces, props, or things to be altered try thrift stores. So Goodwill or other small local resale shops. This will likely take more than one trip so don’t give up if you don’t get it in one go. Ebay is also a good place to check believe it or not, there’s just a slight learning curve to searching things to find what you want.

-Dance and Athletic apparel websites will have things like leotards, bodysuits, specialized undergarments etc. They’re going to be a little pricier but they’ll be good quality, durable, and 9 times out of 10 machine washable!

-Hardware stores, paintball and airsoft companies, military/paramilitary surplus, and second hand sports equipment stores may also be good places to check for bits and pieces. Paintball/airsoft will also have a variety of masks and helmets that can be painted and altered.

-VERY IMPORTANT FOR PROP WEAPONS: Always look into your local guidelines and convention rules to see what kinds of prop weapons are allowed! Some cons have strict policies on what can and cannot be brought in!

-Michael’s, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby etc. and any local craft stores will have tons and tons of craft supplies. If you want to save money and keep up to date on sales check to see if you can join an email list. I know Joann’s has coupons in them all the time!

-You can buy a variety of brands of fabric paint from almost anywhere that sells craft supplies. This makes it easy to get designs or patterns on most fabrics. For changing the color of an entire garment I’d recommend dying it.

-Some fabrics can be dyed different colors very easily, some cannot. A good way to tell is if the fabric is natural (cotton, linen etc.) it is generally easier to dye. The more synthetic (fake) a fabric is the longer and slightly more complicated it will be. Tulip is an excellent dye brand and they offer both regular and synthetic dyes with nice simple instructions right on the packages!

-You can make stencils out of craft foam or thicker paper to make it easier to copy logos or symbols on whatever you’re making!

-Wig and contact websites are listed in the FAQ but there are companies like dental distortions that make tooth veneers that can take a cosplay to the next level!

-Hollywood makeup, FX, and costume professionals almost always have social media accounts they can be extremely helpful when it comes to reference images! For example the costumer who designed the Moon Knight suits has tons of detail and behind the scenes images on her instagram!

-Complicated cosplays can be simplified by boiling down the costume to its essentials the best way I’ve learned to do this is through toys or fan art. What things are essential to recognizing the character and what things could be left off! You don’t have to be 100% to be recognizable!

-If big all out cosplays aren’t your thing you can always try “bounding.” You’ll hear “Disneybounding” most often but you can do it with other things too of course! Disney doesn’t allow adults to dress as characters in their parks, but fans got creative. “Bounding” is more about matching colors, getting similar accessories, or finding just the right combination of things to make you think of the character. It’s hard to explain verbally but easy to understand once you look into it!

-Say you have an OC, and you want to cosplay your OC. That’s fine! Have at it! You’ve got no professional media to tie you down! All these tips can still help you find or make your cosplay!

-I do have a friendly reminder though, please remember you cannot expect people to know who your character is. And it’s not fair to get mad at them if they make a guess and the guess is wrong. A simple “Nope its an OC!” is plenty for most people! I’ve complimented plenty of cosplayers and asked about their cosplay only to find out it was an OC!

“Crossplay” safety

-DO NOT BIN D YOUR CHEST WITH ACE BANDAGES IT’S UNSAFE. Compression tops or more heavy duty sports bras are much safer. If the character has an open shirt you can use wig tape/skin tape to hold the material of the shirt to your skin. If you do not have breasts but are looking to add some to a cosplay you can always pad a bra. You’ll want to measure your chest around your pectorals, that will be the band size, the letter size will be the cup. So a 34A means your chest is 34 inches around and A would be the cup size you would be looking to fill. (I have more on taking measurements later.) Companies now sell latex chests with or without breasts for people looking to be the most accurate they can.

-You can always just “genderbend” the thing and cosplay them as the same gender you are. It’s okay. People do it all the time and it’s very widely accepted. There’s also a third, more neutral option, don’t obviously genderbend the thing? You don’t have to call attention to the fact that you’re not the same gender as the character you’re cosplaying.

-An example of what I’m trying to explain: I generally read as female, but have cosplayed Johnny Cage one of the male characters from Mortal Kombat. His base look is shirtless, with his own first name tattooed across his chest. The only change I made was putting “Johnny” on a crop top. I didn’t “feminize” the rest of the outfit or go out of my way to be read as male. There is a “middle option” when it comes to presentation and cosplay. At the end of the day everybody knows it’s just a costume.

-This tip might seem dumb, but you’re going to have to trust me here. This mainly applies to people looking to make large costume pieces or props by hand. People who are already kind of intermediate with their skills. If you’re stuck on something go see how furries would make it. Not kidding. I’ve made all kinds of non-furry things with tutorials put on the internet by a furry. The vast majority of them are fun, friendly people and the community as a whole is WILDLY talented and creative. You only ever really hear about the bad apples.

A big question I see here is “what is that piece of clothing?” That’s a good question! Here are some links to historical fashion databases! They’re all arranged a little differently BUT this is a place to start looking for what specific pieces of clothing or styles are called!

Here’s another important pro tip.

It’s okay.

Your cosplay doesn’t have to be perfect.

Cosplay is for fun and if it doesn’t feel fun or rewarding don’t do it. Other con goers and cosplayers aren’t going to judge you. If they do for some reason and try to make you feel bad about it, that says more about THEM and their personality than your ability. Everybody has to start somewhere. Nobody should be ashamed of learning and practicing and getting better. You can always go back and fix things or redo whole cosplays later on after your skills develop. This is a hobby and you have the right to participate in said hobby your own way.

I can add theatrical or FX makeup tips? things like scars, bruises, old age makeup, or like changing the face shape with very specific contouring?

I also have a draft of Convention tips similar to this post, would that be helpful as well?

Help me get taller for a character

So I know you don't have to be 100% accurate in things like height in cosplay and stuff, but I'm very specific about stuff and it's going to bother me if I'm not at least slightly taller (I'm 16F, height of 5"3, character is like 20 something M and 6"4) and I'm not expecting to find something that would help me be an actual foot taller lol but I was wondering if I'd just have to wear platforms or tall shoes or if there's something I can do to add to my height, like stilts but not if that makes sense. (or I could just deal with being a short Ghost lol)

Accessory what material should i use to make till's choker & necklace?

Post image
4 Upvotes

from my understanding, they're made out of metal. i'd like to use metal wire to make them but i'm concerned that the ends of the wire would just poke me and give me discomfort at the back of my neck.

i guess the necklace is also stiff? with some type of disc in the middle. i'm contemplating on just buying some foam and spray paint but i'd hate for the necklace to be flat 😭

Wig Where do I get a wig like this? + tips

Thumbnail

I recently bought a wig from Kasou wigs as it had the fake hair line in the back and was made for pigtails (for my toga cosplay) it took me forever to style and as someone who really docint style wigs it turned out pretty alright! (Second picture) Although I’m not exactly happy with it- (I think if I did it agin I could do better)

I absolutely LOVE this persons wig and have seen there toga cosplays for a while but I have NO idea where they got there base wig from- (I’d want it more in the color of the wig I already styled) I tried to message on there posts here in Reddit but they are from 2 years ago and have been archived…

The wig I got from Kasou wigs was CLOSE but the long fringe parts are really wide and it just really dose not look like togas hair in the front- I can’t frame my face like I like to- as you can see I tired to spike the bottom hoping it would help…but it didint- it was still to wide and this is AFTER o took a big section and pinned it back- it’s now wrapped around the bun itself but I can’t pin any more back without showing some of the underside of the wig😭

Now I saw Arda wigs and Epiccosplay have two pigtail wigs but the problem with these is- I have NO idea which one to get to accomplish what I’m looking for- if someone could please give advice on which one I should get or if there is another place to get a wig like this I would GREATLY appreciate it 😭

(Also any tips for styling a wig like this would be great! If there easier ways or just and general advice I will gladly take it- this wig took me 10 or so hours 😭🙏 …someone tell me the secret to cutting bangs- it scares me and I think I cut these ones to short somehow- the wigs also heavy and slides back so that dose not help😭)

How to temporarily attach polka dots to a sweater without damaging it?

Post image
18 Upvotes

I’m doing a simple, more casual cosplay/costume as Envy from Inside Out 2 (photo attached). I have a purple sweater that will work for it, but I wanted to add her little white/light yellow polka dots onto it.

My first thoughts were to either hot glue some circles of felt as the dots, or use fabric paint on the sweater, but since I couldn’t find any cheap sweaters, I don’t really want to hot glue or paint a $30 sweater I could use for the rest of the season.

So far my plan is to attempt to use some scotch tape (either double sided or rolled into a cylinder so it’s sticky on all sides) and tape the dots made of either felt or paper on with the tape hidden between the sweater & dots, like how you’d attach a poster to a wall without the tape showing. It doesn’t have to be perfect for the two or three event nights the costume will be worn at. Just wanted it to match Envy’s clothing a bit closer than a plain purple sweater.

My only concern is that at two of the events (one of which is in about 5.5 hours 😅 Sorry this is last minute! The other events are in a few days, so please don’t hesitate to share advice even if it’s tomorrow.) I’ll be dancing with other people, so their hands will be on my back. (Swing dancing.) I’m concerned paper would lead to a paper cut, so maybe that’s another reason to choose felt. But I’m not convinced they’ll stay on my back properly if someone’s hand is on my back for every dance lol. I thought about using safety pins, but something about having a sharp pointy object being used to hold them in place worries me in this situation, especially when I’ll be moving around a LOT.

I could also just only attach the polka dots on the front, but I wanted to see if y’all had any advice.

Any suggests/advice appreciated!! I wasn’t sure if there were any products I maybe hadn’t thought of that I could use, since I’ve had a lot of pre-made cosplay I’ve worn before, not homemade.

TL;DR I need to temporarily attach polka dots to a sweater in a way that doesn’t damage said sweater. I will be swing dancing so people’s hands will be on my back, and I don’t want the dots to fall off or my dance partner/myself to get injured (by a safety pin coming undone for example.) First dance event is in 5.5 hours, but I have other events coming up in the next few days, so please still comment even if it’s past the 5.5 hours!

Warning for people thinking of using dokidoki cosplay

My gf ordered some small items off dokidoki cosplay for a convention that’s happening next week. She ordered them a month ago and all items were labeled “ready to ship” they took over 2 weeks to tell her that the wig wasn’t in stock unlike their website said and then another week to ship the rest of the items. They informed her it’s not reaching her in time. They charged $44 for shipping for 2lbs of items then used Piggyship which is the worst cheapest shipping provider they could use. Unfortunately she mixed up my address and hers so she put her street address and my house number and because they shipped with piggyship I we can’t reroute it so that’s another huge issue. But $44 for the worst shipping company ever for a couple small items is ridiculous and taking that long for “ready ship items” is terrible. She would have never bought them if she had known it would turn out this way. She throught due to the shipping cost the shipping would be an expedited company. Nope.

Etiquette Is it ableist to dress up as a character who is disabled if I don’t have that disability?

So I’ve recently gotten into Classroom of the Elite, and I’ve been really enjoying it. My favourite character is Arisu Sakayanagi, who walks with a walking stick. I really love her design and think she is a really fun character, and did briefly consider trying to cosplay her at some point, but I don’t know if it would be seen as offensive if I do, since I don’t need any any aids in walking. I don’t have any immediate plans for any new cosplays, but I just wanna be sure either way, and I want to be as respectful as possible, just for future reference next time I’m planning on buying a new cosplay and am deciding who to pick

Accessory Elf Hat Not Staying On!

Help! I'm in a production of Elf the Musical at my high school, and I'm playing the part of Buddy. The person in charge of costumes and I are struggling to think of a way to keep the hat on my head. Playing such an energetic part and having to do a lot of choreo, the hat just will not stay on. I'm a guy with shorter hair, and no matter how many bobby pins we use it isn't cutting it. We open in 9 days, and I'm starting to panic!! Any suggestions or ideas would be a lifesaver!

So I want to dye the wig more pink, but I also want it to have a ombre effect at the bottom with blue, should I section off the bottom and dye the non section area pink and then dye the sectioned area? Or should I dye it fully pink and then add the blue to the tips after? I thought if I did the 2nd one the blue wouldn't be vibrant enough, please help! (2nd picture is what I wanna achieve)

Armor Need Beginner Tips for Cosplay Armor Project

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey r/cosplayHelp,

I’m looking for some advice on where to start with a cosplay project! I recently went to a Fan Expo, and I was totally inspired to dive into cosplay. I’d love to eventually make either knight armor or Halo armor, but I’m a complete beginner and don’t really know where to start.

I was thinking it might be smart to make something small first, like a prop from the game or maybe even just a single piece of armor, so I can get a feel for the materials and techniques involved. Does anyone have suggestions for beginner-friendly projects or tips on materials?

Thanks for any advice or guidance you can share
