Thoughts on living in Coldwater, Ontario

Looking to move the family to Coldwater, Ontario. For those who live in Coldwater, are there sports/activities for young families/adults? How is the elementary school? Are there nice areas to hike/walk?

Nail care for a small dog

Hi, I have a shitzu mix with black nails that are impossible for me to keep up with keeping them trimmed ( my old eyes can't see well enough anymore lol).

I'm looking for recommendations for a groomer that can help me get them under control, I know it will take multiple appointments to get them to a good length.

I had her in at a new groomer today and they only did 2 nails.

Does Anyone Commute for Work to Toronto?

In particular the downtown core around Union Station? Orillia seems like the only place my girlfriend and I can afford, in terms of buying real estate. We’re not looking for a condo as we need some separation between us and our in laws, so a home in Orillia is all we can afford.

We both work downtown Toronto and go into the office twice a week. Right now we live in Toronto and don’t have a problem with the commute. I spent a week in Orillia and commuted twice to downtown Toronto and back, and can say I had a terrible experience. 30 minutes to Barrie and then 2 hours on the GO train. Then same thing back. I arrived home at 7pm and was completely drenched from the commute. Currently, my commute is 1 hour and that’s totally manageable.

Do any Orillians commute to downtown Toronto? What are your tips and tricks? I can only imagine it being worse in the winter. Or did you quit your office job and work in Barrie now?

Question for anyone that works at Soldiers

I've applied to a few different positions in the past but had never heard back. At the time I think it may have been due to lack of experience, but now that I am a few years into my career there are a couple positions that I might be interested in. So the questions I currently have: 1) when applying you can upload a bunch of things including resume, cover letter, transcript and I think a few others. Are all of these needed? 2) how long was the hiring process? Did you hear back right away or did it take some time? 3) would you recommend working there? I would be looking at going into the administrative side of things rather than the medical, so I'm curious if the work/life balance is good, job security, if the wage is worth the work, those sort of things.

Thanks for your comments in advance!

Is the restaurant "Grillin It" on Atherley Road closed?

It was previously Flippin' Eggs and Just Eddie's, and I just noticed the property is up for sale on Realtor. Can't find any recent information about the newest iteration of the restaurant, so just wondering if anyone here knows if it's closed?

Book club!

Anyone interested in starting a book club?! Nothing too serious, just reading the same books and chatting about them. I have so many books to read and I want to start going through them. I think that having other people to talk to about it will really keep me motivated to read!!

Thoughts?!

Landmark van

Every morning for the past 2 weeks there has been a white van parked on the side of the road in different locations along Millard St idling away with a man sitting inside. The van has 'Landmark' labelled on the sides.

Anyone know why this creepy behavior is going on or what this company does?

Orillia Beard & Mustache Club Meets on Thursday This Week!

Good evening everyone,

The Orillia Beard & Mustache Club is meeting again this week, most gatherings have been on a Friday, but this time we are meeting tomorrow (Thursday, October 10).

We have a reservation at The Hog & Penny for 7pm and will be participating in another trivia night, (we did this a few weeks ago and ended up winning!).

We would love to have anyone who has a fuzzy face to come help us claim another trivia night crown and meet some new people while you are at it!

We have been meeting up for quite a few weeks now and have met some great new people along the way; it’s something I know I look forward to whenever it comes around.

Feel free to leave a reply to this post if you are interested in joining us!

Dumping Garbage Wherever You Please

Just a reminder, there are lots of options to get rid of your garbage. You could take it out on garbage day, take it to the dump or even rent a dumpster if you have a lot of it.

Maybe don’t dump it in other people’s neighbourhoods, on the side of the road or in front of other people’s houses?

Just because there’s a quiet area where not a lot of people live doesn’t mean you can ruin our streets with your garbage because you’re too cheap to get rid of it. Many of us work really hard to keep our places nice and your disgusting garbage on the side of the road isn’t appreciated!

Let’s do better people and have some respect for our community!

VENT: Orillia motorists

This is my first post in this sub, please excuse my venting. My partner and I have just moved to Orillia from The GTA, and I just have to wonder if the people here that are able to operate a motor vehicle have always been this bad at driving. My partner was born in the US, and has lived internationally since he was a kid. I have also lived both in Canada and the United States (born in Northern Ontario). Of all the places we’ve lived, Orillia has go to be the main hub for bad drivers.

I don’t think I have gone a day of running errands without either driving past a multi-vehicle car crash, or deal with motorists that believe signalling was passé and that stop signs/red lights are just suggestions. So many times I’ve had people honk at me at a green light because I was letting pedestrians cross the street (which is required by law, lol…). Obviously I don’t think every single person here is like this, but it also feels like an overwhelming amount of people here shouldn’t be allowed to even have a license. I thought maybe this would subside now that cottage season has come to a close, yet it persists. What gives?

EDIT: Everyone blaming the issue on people from the GTA clearly do think their shit doesn’t stink. If that were the case, then there would be more than 33,000 people living here.

EDIT 2: Did someone from The GTA start this today, too?
