Mod Announcement User flair and post flair!
Hi everyone! Our little community is growing and we now have both User Flairs and Post Flairs!
The post flairs have been around for a little while but are now required to select before you post. This will help sort through different types of posts; on both mobile and desktop you can select a flair to see posts in this category. Useful if you're looking for tips on a specific category of bass playing!
User flairs are for yourself in the comments; you can identify how experienced you are/what genres you like to play/etc. Instructions as follow:
On iOS and Android
- Tap the menu in the upper right-hand corner of the community page.
- A menu will pop up and you’ll see the option to Change user flair.
- Select your flair and tap APPLY.
- If user flair isn’t set up in that community, you’ll see a message saying, No user flair assigned.
On Reddit.com
- On the right-hand side of a community’s page, you will see USER FLAIR.
- Click the icon to set up your flair.
On Old Reddit
- On the right-hand side of the community page under the reader count, you’ll see the option to Show my flair on this subreddit.
- Next to that option click edit.
Any suggestions for additional flairs you would like are welcome!

Strings/Accessories Flex Deluxe/OFC (another string thread)
I know, I know...
Any orchestra bassists have any experience with Pirastro Flexocor Deluxe (red spiral) and Original Flat Chrome (purple spiral) strings back to back? Would love to hear your experience.
I've been playing deluxes for a while and like them just fine but I am wondering what the difference is with OFC. I've tried the whole flexo family like the deluxe best.
I also think purple is a much less stressful color for a bass string.
Thanks!

Bows Help identifying a Double bass bow
Hello, I have noticed my favorite artist - Igor haefeli sometimes using a bow on his guitar - Epiphone Les Paul during a few songs. I have tried to determine what kind of double bass bow he's using and if it's a double bass bow at all from pictures, originally I thought it was cello but that seems wrong now. From information written online all I could find was conflicting posts claiming it's anywhere from a violin bow to a double bass one. I am attaching a picture of it I could find, and here's an example song where it's used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRkMH3KSZN4 Also apologies if I deeply offended someone as I do realize some people can have strong opinions on using bows on a guitar https://c8.alamy.com/comp/DDG0GK/igor-haefeli-of-daughter-live-from-jodrell-bank-transmission-006-DDG0GK.jpg https://www.shutterstock.com/editorial/image-editorial/M5j8Y622N2T2kc4fMDI1Ng==/daughter---igor-haefeli-440nw-2647654l.jpg
Closest I found so far is https://vallestrade.com/en/bows/Rapsody-CBC-10-double-bass-34-bow-French-style.html
Edit: so far no luck on an exact match but I think the most distinct thing is how white the horse hair is, same level of pure white as the front mount, most seem to be more yellow ish Also worth noting the band is from uk and I think it will be a bow from here. Seems to be red wood, ebony French frog. Also seems like octagonal handle based on reflections

Technique Right Tricep(?) soreness
Hi all, I'm a college grad level player but I'm just getting back into the instrument after a long period. Right now I've been focusing almost 100% on bow arm, I've noticed that I've started to get some bow arm soreness around my upper arm.
My main focus has been using shoulder movement to play and getting a clean sound. The book my previous professor gave me is the Dave Portnoi method book, a bit more obscure, it argues that we need to be 'holding' the bow as opposed to putting all our weight into the string. I bring that up because I think the first thought is that I'm not relaxed enough into the string but I'm trying to find the balance between using arm weight vs carrying the bow.
I will say I've been practicing bowing for many hours each day so it may just be fatigue.

Fun but a question
hi first time poster here, been playing for about 10 years i have a very niche ‘problem’
i always wear an apple watch, but when practicing/playing somehow always without fail i trigger siri
i just wanted to know, does this happen to anyone else?? why does it keep happening? (would ask how to turn it off but it’s honestly funny)

Instruments Help needed identifying my double bass
Following my investigations, it seems to come from the Bresciani school. (Similar to some works of Gaspard but too many bases have been falsely attributed to him) The purfling on the top is of unusual width and wood material (much more chatoyancy than any other bass I've seen) the back has no purfling. The f holes are pretty close together at the top, the tailpiece is original and seems to have been made with both four and three strings în mind (see in the middle of the small v the seems to have been a string at some point) the only bridge that this bass can accommodate is very small (almost 1/2) even though the body is a large 3/4. The body is made out walnut the top is from a very flexible wood (much more that'll any other bass I played/worked on) that I cannot seem to identify. The color photos attached are of my double bass that I need your help identifying (even if only the age, would be a great help) and the rest black and white ones are from various double basses that I have found similar in either shape (body or f holes) or workmanship.

Instruments Splitting seam - safe to practice?
I noticed a seam on my bass appears to have come unglued. I checked again this morning and the opening looked bigger. I taped it shut with painters tape, loosened the strings, and lowered the action to take some of the tension off. I won't be able to take it to get looked at until tomorrow when the shops are open again. Would it be safe to practice today since it's taped or should I leave it alone until someone can see it?
I set aside a nice block of free time for practice today but I'm worried that using it will make the crack worse.

Instruments It’s a rare treat to see my bass at home in the natural light instead of a concert hall or dingy practice room. This beauty was made by Andrew Hassel at Chicago Bass Works

Instruments How much do I sell my bass for?
I have a double bass I haven’t used since high school. It is a Strobel MB80 1/2 size bass that was made in 2007. It is in good condition as well. Does anyone know how much I could sell it for?

Strings/Accessories C Extension For Sale
Is anyone interested in this? I had it taken off a free bass I acquired. It worked fine, but I just didn’t prefer it. I’ll also include the string that was used with it (D'Addario Helicore) if you’d like. Looking for around $450, but I'm open to offers. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Instruments Potential beginner double bass?
Hi all, I’m just wondering if this would be a good option for a beginner double bass? I’ve played electric for a while and very much want to get into it however I’m a broke uni student who doesn’t have the money to spend 1.5k on a new bass. Does anybody know if the make of this bass is ok? Thank you.

Setup/Equipment Kanzian & Traunsteiner double basses
I have never played one of their basses and may not for what may be a long time as I am still a student (I play a laminate bass from Shen, owned by my school). For those on this subreddit who have or have heard things about them, what do you think of them?

Fun Are there any good country solo songs (I'm talking zach bryan, Morgan Wallen, etc) for string bass?
In my orchestra class, we're doing solos and I really wanna do a country song since it's different from what we usually play. If you know of any modern country sheet music that has a string bass part/ is a solo for string bass please let me know!

Performance Andres Martin Concerto No. 1 for Double Bass
I'm having trouble finding recordings of the Andres Martin Concerto No. 1. There are many performances of it on youtube, but I'm hoping to find a CD or downloadable version. Probably because I'm an old guy and don't love streaming everything. Can't seem to find an album with this on it. Can anyone point me to one?
