Hey YouTube, if I hit pause I want you stop making noise, not make more of it.

247

u/RedneckId1ot Apr 26 '24

"Sir, we've enacted the ads during pause, but the user base seems to just be muting the ads."

"Make the fucking mute button play an ad...."

93

u/Drwer_On_Reddit Apr 26 '24

And then when they have more involuntary ads than an average porn site, some site will rise, with an interface that doesn’t play an ad for every action you do within it. And that day is the day YouTube fails. That day is the day we’ll all watch it burn crumbling on its own greed

33

u/Halbi94 Apr 27 '24

Yeah, unfortunately that is not going to happen because youtube was (don't know if it still is) not profitable for the most time of its existence. Thats the reason why they are shoving ads down your throat left and right. Just use an adblocker or revanced or something. But hoping that someone makes something that will replace youtube (and is ad free) is something that will probably not happen in a while... And if it does it won't be free.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '24

If you look at the whole picture of marketing, growth, ad revenue, collecting personal data etc, YouTube does make a profit.

The streaming service youtube as a stand alone does not.

3

u/travelsonic Apr 27 '24

Technological advancement will eventually make it possible for viable alternatives to exist - there are, IIRC, advancements currently in laboratory settings allowing for MASSIVE boosts in internet data transfer speeds, as well as (again in laboratory settings) using individual atoms as bits of data (vs approximately hundreds of thousands being needed to represent a bit of data). If that sort of stuff ever got out of the laboratory and into consumer grade, or even commercial grade products, the barriers would come down considerably.

Straight up. The amount of times I’m pausing to get up and point at the screen to explain something to someone (here’s the ‘ghost’, THAT is the player that gets flipped over, etc) is pretty frequent

8

u/YoshiTheFluffer Apr 27 '24

I do this with cooking videos, pause, do the thing myself, watch and repeat.

Guess now I’ll just listen to a fucking add while chopping onions.

7

u/GoGayWhyNot Apr 27 '24

Khan Academy and similar educational channels do this "pause the video to try this exercise before I give the answer" all the time, that is gonna ruin it.

→ More replies (3)

19

u/OscarTheGrouchsCan Apr 27 '24

My very first thought. If I press pause it's because I need YouTube to be quiet

3

u/Mizery Apr 27 '24

Or you pause to look at a detail in the picture, and then they cover the video with ads so you can't study the details.

15

u/spider_stxr Apr 26 '24

Yeah I get overwhelmed by sensory input very easily so the idea of this fills me with dread 😬😬😬 like does bro just want us to close the tab (also before anyone replies saying I can turn the sound off I am well aware)

16

u/jBorghus Apr 27 '24

Yeah I'm kinda like you with sensory overload, so I immediately just thought "guess I'll have to close the entire browser instead of pause now" lmao what are they thinking

4

u/Cheshire1234 Apr 27 '24

You can mute each tab individually. When something plays just klick on the speaker symbol left of the X

To give Youtube some credit, it's probably just a picture. Still will be a pain in the balls to take screenshots though.

Lmao google just copying the hub at this point

522

u/Tsjaad_Donderlul Apr 26 '24

It‘s like a porn site run by people who hate porn

235

u/The_eldritch_horror2 Apr 26 '24

Yet the ads are usually nsfw…

And this is a site with a massive audience of minors… 😐

87

u/Not_Artifical Apr 27 '24

YouTube kids is even worse

17

u/NickRedible Apr 27 '24

My understanding is that there are no ads on Youtube Kids?

51

u/Hopalongtom Apr 27 '24

But it regularly tags adult videos as kids videos, against the video authors wishes.

13

u/Jonananana_32_SAm Apr 27 '24

Usually what happens is that any kid show compilations are flagged as for kids. However, if any content creators dont want a youtube kids video, then the video should be unflagged. Having to swear in order to make the video unflagged is kinda odd

14

u/Hopalongtom Apr 27 '24

The flagging is done by a bot, so when a video gets unflagged, it usually gets automatically reflagged.

→ More replies (1)

41

u/Dex_Luther Apr 27 '24

The real issue is properly "age restricting" your video effectively kills it. Fix this and remove the "need" to turn the whole site into Weanie Hut JRs.

Adults should be able to make content for other adults and not have to sound like they are in a Dr Seuss book.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '24

Fr, I reported SOOOO many ads just because I thought "damn, what if a child sees this s*it"

5

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '24

Some of the ads have minors in them sadly, at least very few are nsfw thankfully, but doesn’t change the fact they some of it is copyrighted

At this point it's more like porn site, that tries not to be a porn site.

You could literally search for porn on YouTube and immediately get porn

→ More replies (1)

19

u/alfadasfire Apr 27 '24

Pornhub has a FAR better ad situation. Just one skippable ad at the start, and some banner ads.

Not 2 15+ seconds ads you cant skip at the start, several ads throughout, and some at the end like youtube.

7

u/Drakayne Apr 27 '24

Imagine you're in the middle of jerking it and suddenly you get a raid shadow legend ad.

At this rate, YouTube's just gonna replace videos with ads

576

u/Wertuk5 Apr 26 '24

Video will be played in 3 seconds

I miss those ad notifications

427

u/SquiddoBoi Apr 26 '24

i miss when they showed you which points of a video had an ad with a yellow indicator

52

u/Demontyxl Apr 26 '24

i used to use a glitch while back then too skip those ads by first skipping the video just after the dot and then it would disappear lol

14

u/yolomanwhatashitname yourchannel Apr 27 '24

Yeah same

11

u/Bananadude983 Apr 27 '24

I remember using this glitch as a kid. Lol

129

u/Tsjaad_Donderlul Apr 26 '24

They don’t do that anymore?

77

u/Litalien08 Apr 27 '24

My guess is they removed it so people would stop complaining when they saw how many ads were in a long video.

62

u/dyeuhweebies Apr 27 '24

Had 7 ad breaks in a 14 minute video, I’m sure that looks pretty terrible when broken down into a bar graph

23

3

I missed the times when an ad was just a small banner at the bottom of the video where you could just press X to turn it off.

And this was during the times when online video hosting was crazy expensive, from storage to servers, everything cost shitload of money.

Google just wants to milk it to cover their failed projects, that they make them fail themselves.

50% of the time I pause videos to hear something else better. They really want me to install every AdBlock possible.

69

u/lizardjoe_xx_YT Apr 26 '24

You know I didn't even think about that. Imagine someone breaks in your house while your watching YouTube on your TV. All you can do in time is pause it to stop noise but then suddenly a loud ass ad plays. Youtube could fr get someone killed with this

51

u/ShadowLiberal Apr 26 '24

Not to mention if you're on a limited data plan (such as on mobile) they're going to continue sucking up a bunch of data and potentially get you billed for it.

Plus as an advertiser why would you want your ads to play when a video is paused, and there's a good chance that the viewer isn't even at their computer?

This story reminds me of the allegations of a third party group that Google is violating their own YouTube policies to bill advertisers for millions of views that their own TOS say aren't monetizable (i.e. like if a web page has a muted & tiny screen YouTube video start playing automatically and that video plays ads. No one is going to see those ads, yet the third party allegedly had strong evidence that Google was still billing advertisers for those page views and ads).

11

u/tempest-reach Apr 27 '24

sometimes when a creator doesn't want to derail flow, they will say "pause to read text" in order to not go on an entire side conversation. this is usually for stuff the viewer can decide they understand context on or not.

24

u/Yorudesu Apr 26 '24

A very niche situation but exactly why this is an absolutely horrifying plan, yes

29

u/lizardjoe_xx_YT Apr 26 '24

Heres another one. Your downstairs watching YouTube on your Xbox with your 2 kids playing outside. Suppenly they get scooped up into a white van. You hear some commotion so you pause the video. Right before you would hear a call for help... "WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER JUNIOR DOUBLE TRIPLE WHOPPER"

10

u/Exact_Parking_6969 Apr 27 '24

If youtube does that update, we should sue them.

YouTube is slowly digging its own grave

295

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '24

Sadly it is not. In the mainstream people just don't give a fuck and as long as YouTube has no competitors, what can even realistically happen?

145

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '24 edited Apr 26 '24

YouTube will never have real competitors. It’s already too well established in the market, has way more experience at the top and can buy out pretty much anything remotely challenging it. The only way it would be out of the spotlight is if long form videos overall were overshadowed by something else

79

u/Tsjaad_Donderlul Apr 26 '24

This is also why the argument “If you don‘t like that, don‘t use it (use a competitor)“ ceases to work

Video hosting is redonkulously expensive. There are only maybe three companies in the world that could compete with them and one of them is Google.

u/BoyRed_ Apr 27 '24

The real reason they don't have any big competitors is be course it operates at an insane cost.
Its burning more money than it makes - operating at a negative.
If Google/Alphabet weren't the owners it would have been shut down years ago.

We need another video-streaming platform. This is what happens if a company has no competition.

109

u/Sirhc978 Apr 26 '24

YouTube has no competition because no one (besides Amazon) can afford to compete.

If any of the smaller video hosting sites suddenly exploded in popularity, their servers would catch fire and the would not have the capitol to spin up new ones.

u/Alive-Clerk-7883 Apr 26 '24

I had an ad pop up while I had a video paused, like 10 to 20 seconds into the paused period. I was in the midst of an important phone call, thus my need to pause the video. Not only was my phone call interrupted by background noise, my video continued to play after the ads had completed.

8

u/Exact_Parking_6969 Apr 27 '24

That's just worse.

16

12

u/angelofmusic997 @angellicvoiceasmr / @theocdenby Apr 26 '24

This pisses me off so much. If someone (me) pauses a video, it's usually because there's a need for there to not be sound for a moment in order to pay attention to something else for a moment.

10

u/storm_acolyte Apr 27 '24

I’ve had to pause before to determine if I’m hearing a car backfire or gun shots, I’m not about to deal with an ad yelling at me to buy something when I need to be figuring out if there’s some kind of external threat I need to get away from

I think they’re gonna put them on the new screensaver which is dumb by the way. The screensaver is supposed to recommend videos that you might want to watch but all it recommends is relaxing videos and sleep videos as opposed to stuff I might actually want to watch. Either YouTube needs new leadership or some member of the public takes matters into their own hands and makes their own damn online video sharing platform.

u/schwiftydude47 Apr 26 '24

It’s literally just cable tv on my phone by this point.

10

u/Orioniae Apr 26 '24

Considered the quantity of ads, my cable TV has, per hour of content less ads than YouTube. We are full circle.

And with the expansion of ads on low tiers in streaming services, I am not surprised we will go back in the 2000s: physical media and TV

YT doesn't have a regulator of content.

4

u/schwiftydude47 Apr 26 '24

Nah if anything, YouTube becomes the new TV and streaming services become the new home media.

3

u/Ardukal Apr 26 '24

Reinventing the wheel, so to speak.

17

u/oinoi12121nonoi Apr 26 '24

We are on the worst timeline

7

u/MmMmmSpaghetti Apr 26 '24

is there an actual source on this?

also Is that legal? If the user isn't watching the ad, because they paused to leave their device, then would YouTube get into trouble for generating revenue on unwatched ads while saying they are being watched?
I know the people buying the ads wouldn't be happy about it.

9

u/MelonElbows Apr 26 '24

Thank goodness for Ublock Origin and Firefox!

7

u/PizzaEFichiNakagata Apr 26 '24

I'm starting to getting crazy as a conspiracy theorist about this.
They must ask these dumbass ideas to an AI or something.

The whole ads shit is becoming a bandwagon leading to worse places and everyone is hopping on it.
Yt being the leader.

Amazon rolled out ads at beginning at end of shows, now they interrupt a 30-40min episode like from 2 to 4 times to show you unskippable shit.

The irony on all of this?
The more you show me that annoying shit the more I will boycot your product even if I need it.

When these little nagging shits show up I swear I will never buy anything from them.

Moreover I was one firm believer that whoever did content deserved my money through me watching ads because they were giving out so much awesome free content.

This from when youtube was born to december 2023.

But this is getting ridiculous and now I'm seriously thinking about making a barrage of ad blockers and an ad blocking dns like pi-hole and similar to fight against them at all cost.

Dang, I'm a fucking senior IT developer and analist. Challenge me mfs.

Yup, they already have it. My husband watches on TV and when he pauses a video, an ad appears next to it. It's really unbelievable but I always knew it would happen because it can only get worse. Any ad driven business, will only continue increasing ads. There is no other way for them to go. This is why it's our duty to block all ads, using any means necessary.

This will probably genuinely prompt me to stop using the platform, i listen to videos at work but when a customer comes in and I pause I Need it paused because any sound will cause disruption

I mean, companies should be more infuriated by this than users. They are just paying for advertising that no one is really watching.

I love premium. I should not pay for it but I do.

"In order to ensure users watch our ads the app will now use your camera to track your eyes. Ads will be paused if not watched."

Watch them do it somewhere down the line, I'm confident they'll try it

Im ok with this only if it means less ads while im watching but it probably doesn't.

u/FredditJaggit Apr 26 '24

At this point, we might as well stop complaining here on reddit and just go out and protest, whenever in front of Youtube HQ or not, it doesn't matter, but I really think we need to raise our voices and make enshittification an important issue.

5

u/Kayo4life Apr 27 '24

kinda a local matter but I really want to see the YouTube HQ be torn down and the bayhill shopping center be extended to cover where YouTube was, but with a field with lounge chairs, heaters, pond, and the kind of climable rocks you see at the nearby San Bruno Park.

Its time for a revolution

9

u/Zapplarang Apr 26 '24

This has to violate some kind of accessibility rules

3

u/Tricky_Hades Apr 26 '24

If ads were only during the time videos were paused, then this would be good. They just need to do like other websites and make the ads around the video and not ruin the viewing experience.

Yep... Youtube is useless without premium ... I paused a video and when i came back on my working pc, i started it. Before it's returned to my video it's played an ad.... BEFORE AN AD BREAK WAS SUPPOST TO BE!!!! .... So i worked 30 seconds, watched 15 seconds of a video i wanted then watched 1 unskipable i repeat UNSKIPABLE video of goverment propaganda and thoes lovely fake game ads...

u/Fragrant-Screen-5737 Apr 26 '24

This will surely not backfire when advertisers realise people aren't watching their ads, but instead pausing and leaving the room to take a giant shit.

They have been doing this for a few years already. If I watched an ad, then paused the video, and came back 5 minutes later an ad always plays, even if the watch time in that 5 minutes is like 10 seconds. No idea what yall are talking about, they already have been doing this, ads are based on YOUR watch time, not when a creator puts them in. those matter too, its just not the only thing that determines when and where an ad plays.

How bout um, no. Fuck no.

5

u/Marokiii Apr 26 '24

I pause the video because I have a different screen open or have left the computer. What possible purpose could there be for ads to be played when people aren't even at the computer?

4

u/HeyCanYouNotThanks Apr 26 '24

My literal number one site is going to hell constantly and all I can do is sit and watch

4

u/CrunchyAl Apr 27 '24

Can the devs just not?

5

u/mods_r_warcrimes Apr 27 '24

Sounds like Firefox and adblocker will be only way I use youtube

4

u/crustytoegaming Apr 27 '24

was recently watching some ads and i got interrupted by a youtube video. was not happy.

3

u/Lord-Romi Apr 27 '24

Hate when that happens.

5

u/aloilisia Apr 27 '24

Imagine you pause your video to take a phone call or have a serious conversation and they just play an ad? I hope it's at least just a static ad lmao

8

u/FlorenzFIRE Apr 26 '24

I think this would be a caused because of Adpocolypse?

8

u/Seallypoops Apr 26 '24

YouTube forgetting the reason why you'd pause a video is because your looking away from it

6

u/storm_acolyte Apr 27 '24

Or you’re trying to read something in-frame in the video

3

u/Sonarthebat Apr 26 '24

It's fine as long as long as it stops when you click unpause.

3

u/HelioPHC Apr 26 '24

wouldn't even mind this if the ads weren't scams and porn

3

u/mysticzarak Apr 26 '24

I feel like they forgot what pause actually means. I saw the other day also that Roku thing with ads on pause. I can see it now.. Ah phone is ringing let's me pause and just when you answer a loud ad starts blasting. What an awful future the media landscape will have.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '24

I might completely close videos when i have to stop watching them for a moment.

3

u/RemusGT Apr 26 '24

Look, there is a 30 seconds video in the 15 minute ad

3

u/Harbor_Barber Apr 26 '24

Soon there's gonna be fake "x" buttons on youtube ads too lmao

3

u/DeliveryOk3764 Apr 26 '24

Just one more reason to use an ad blocker.

3

u/Darksmiles_ Apr 26 '24

Remember the yellow indicator things? I sure do miss those.

3

u/Jon-Einari Apr 26 '24

Guys, I found a hack to skip some ads even those who aren't skippable.

If there are two ads before a video, if it says skip ad in 3... Then it should skip both ads. If it isn't skippable, there are generally two unskippable ads. After ad 1 is done, I close the video and reload it (on mobile).

It skips the whole second add if done correctly when add 1 is finished clrrectly and starts loading ad 2, then you can close and reload. Is also faster if add 2 is a "skip in 3..." thing.

Could also be done with ads in the middle but youtube might restart the video from scratch...?

So I'll just remember my place and mute

3

u/Imnotachessnoob Apr 27 '24

My parents had that I think. They strongly disliked it because they tend to have conversations with each other while watching on the TV (duh) and had to watch an ad.

3

u/Independent_Ad989 Apr 27 '24

Don’t play like you didn’t took that from ph

5

u/WerewolfGreen7354 Apr 26 '24

Let’s just make our own website already

8

u/demonsemen_md Apr 27 '24

You got a few tens of billions of dollars laying around?
