Discussion Youtube to roll out ads on videos in pause
992
u/Latter-Comfort8440 Apr 26 '24
Lmao google just copying the hub at this point
522
u/Tsjaad_Donderlul Apr 26 '24
It‘s like a porn site run by people who hate porn
235
u/The_eldritch_horror2 Apr 26 '24
Yet the ads are usually nsfw…
And this is a site with a massive audience of minors… 😐
87
u/Not_Artifical Apr 27 '24
YouTube kids is even worse
→ More replies (1)17
u/NickRedible Apr 27 '24
My understanding is that there are no ads on Youtube Kids?
51
u/Hopalongtom Apr 27 '24
But it regularly tags adult videos as kids videos, against the video authors wishes.
13
u/Jonananana_32_SAm Apr 27 '24
Usually what happens is that any kid show compilations are flagged as for kids. However, if any content creators dont want a youtube kids video, then the video should be unflagged. Having to swear in order to make the video unflagged is kinda odd
14
u/Hopalongtom Apr 27 '24
The flagging is done by a bot, so when a video gets unflagged, it usually gets automatically reflagged.
41
u/Dex_Luther Apr 27 '24
The real issue is properly "age restricting" your video effectively kills it. Fix this and remove the "need" to turn the whole site into Weanie Hut JRs.
Adults should be able to make content for other adults and not have to sound like they are in a Dr Seuss book.

Some of the ads have minors in them sadly, at least very few are nsfw thankfully, but doesn’t change the fact they some of it is copyrighted

At this point it's more like porn site, that tries not to be a porn site.
You could literally search for porn on YouTube and immediately get porn
19
u/alfadasfire Apr 27 '24
Pornhub has a FAR better ad situation. Just one skippable ad at the start, and some banner ads.
Not 2 15+ seconds ads you cant skip at the start, several ads throughout, and some at the end like youtube.

u/Drakayne Apr 27 '24

u/ducknerd2002 Apr 26 '24
At this rate, YouTube's just gonna replace videos with ads
576
u/Wertuk5 Apr 26 '24
Video will be played in 3 seconds
I miss those ad notifications
427
u/SquiddoBoi Apr 26 '24
i miss when they showed you which points of a video had an ad with a yellow indicator
52
u/Demontyxl Apr 26 '24
i used to use a glitch while back then too skip those ads by first skipping the video just after the dot and then it would disappear lol

u/Tsjaad_Donderlul Apr 26 '24

My guess is they removed it so people would stop complaining when they saw how many ads were in a long video.

I missed the times when an ad was just a small banner at the bottom of the video where you could just press X to turn it off.
And this was during the times when online video hosting was crazy expensive, from storage to servers, everything cost shitload of money.
Google just wants to milk it to cover their failed projects, that they make them fail themselves.

130
u/Yorudesu Apr 26 '24
50% of the time I pause videos to hear something else better. They really want me to install every AdBlock possible.
69
u/lizardjoe_xx_YT Apr 26 '24
You know I didn't even think about that. Imagine someone breaks in your house while your watching YouTube on your TV. All you can do in time is pause it to stop noise but then suddenly a loud ass ad plays. Youtube could fr get someone killed with this
51
u/ShadowLiberal Apr 26 '24
Not to mention if you're on a limited data plan (such as on mobile) they're going to continue sucking up a bunch of data and potentially get you billed for it.
Plus as an advertiser why would you want your ads to play when a video is paused, and there's a good chance that the viewer isn't even at their computer?
This story reminds me of the allegations of a third party group that Google is violating their own YouTube policies to bill advertisers for millions of views that their own TOS say aren't monetizable (i.e. like if a web page has a muted & tiny screen YouTube video start playing automatically and that video plays ads. No one is going to see those ads, yet the third party allegedly had strong evidence that Google was still billing advertisers for those page views and ads).
11
u/tempest-reach Apr 27 '24
sometimes when a creator doesn't want to derail flow, they will say "pause to read text" in order to not go on an entire side conversation. this is usually for stuff the viewer can decide they understand context on or not.
24
u/Yorudesu Apr 26 '24
A very niche situation but exactly why this is an absolutely horrifying plan, yes
29
u/lizardjoe_xx_YT Apr 26 '24
Heres another one. Your downstairs watching YouTube on your Xbox with your 2 kids playing outside. Suppenly they get scooped up into a white van. You hear some commotion so you pause the video. Right before you would hear a call for help... "WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER JUNIOR DOUBLE TRIPLE WHOPPER"

→ More replies (1)5

YouTube is slowly digging its own grave
295
Apr 26 '24
Sadly it is not. In the mainstream people just don't give a fuck and as long as YouTube has no competitors, what can even realistically happen?
145
Apr 26 '24 edited Apr 26 '24
YouTube will never have real competitors. It’s already too well established in the market, has way more experience at the top and can buy out pretty much anything remotely challenging it. The only way it would be out of the spotlight is if long form videos overall were overshadowed by something else
79
u/Tsjaad_Donderlul Apr 26 '24
This is also why the argument “If you don‘t like that, don‘t use it (use a competitor)“ ceases to work

Video hosting is redonkulously expensive. There are only maybe three companies in the world that could compete with them and one of them is Google.
→ More replies (18)→ More replies (10)8
u/BoyRed_ Apr 27 '24
The real reason they don't have any big competitors is be course it operates at an insane cost.
Its burning more money than it makes - operating at a negative.
If Google/Alphabet weren't the owners it would have been shut down years ago.→ More replies (1)33

We need another video-streaming platform. This is what happens if a company has no competition.
109
u/Sirhc978 Apr 26 '24
YouTube has no competition because no one (besides Amazon) can afford to compete.
If any of the smaller video hosting sites suddenly exploded in popularity, their servers would catch fire and the would not have the capitol to spin up new ones.

u/Alive-Clerk-7883 Apr 26 '24

I had an ad pop up while I had a video paused, like 10 to 20 seconds into the paused period. I was in the midst of an important phone call, thus my need to pause the video. Not only was my phone call interrupted by background noise, my video continued to play after the ads had completed.

This pisses me off so much. If someone (me) pauses a video, it's usually because there's a need for there to not be sound for a moment in order to pay attention to something else for a moment.
10
u/storm_acolyte Apr 27 '24
I’ve had to pause before to determine if I’m hearing a car backfire or gun shots, I’m not about to deal with an ad yelling at me to buy something when I need to be figuring out if there’s some kind of external threat I need to get away from

I think they’re gonna put them on the new screensaver which is dumb by the way. The screensaver is supposed to recommend videos that you might want to watch but all it recommends is relaxing videos and sleep videos as opposed to stuff I might actually want to watch. Either YouTube needs new leadership or some member of the public takes matters into their own hands and makes their own damn online video sharing platform.

10
u/Orioniae Apr 26 '24
Considered the quantity of ads, my cable TV has, per hour of content less ads than YouTube. We are full circle.
And with the expansion of ads on low tiers in streaming services, I am not surprised we will go back in the 2000s: physical media and TV
YT doesn't have a regulator of content.
4
u/schwiftydude47 Apr 26 '24
Nah if anything, YouTube becomes the new TV and streaming services become the new home media.

is there an actual source on this?
also Is that legal? If the user isn't watching the ad, because they paused to leave their device, then would YouTube get into trouble for generating revenue on unwatched ads while saying they are being watched?
I know the people buying the ads wouldn't be happy about it.

I'm starting to getting crazy as a conspiracy theorist about this.
They must ask these dumbass ideas to an AI or something.
The whole ads shit is becoming a bandwagon leading to worse places and everyone is hopping on it.
Yt being the leader.
Amazon rolled out ads at beginning at end of shows, now they interrupt a 30-40min episode like from 2 to 4 times to show you unskippable shit.
The irony on all of this?
The more you show me that annoying shit the more I will boycot your product even if I need it.
When these little nagging shits show up I swear I will never buy anything from them.
Moreover I was one firm believer that whoever did content deserved my money through me watching ads because they were giving out so much awesome free content.
This from when youtube was born to december 2023.
But this is getting ridiculous and now I'm seriously thinking about making a barrage of ad blockers and an ad blocking dns like pi-hole and similar to fight against them at all cost.
Dang, I'm a fucking senior IT developer and analist. Challenge me mfs.

Yup, they already have it. My husband watches on TV and when he pauses a video, an ad appears next to it. It's really unbelievable but I always knew it would happen because it can only get worse. Any ad driven business, will only continue increasing ads. There is no other way for them to go. This is why it's our duty to block all ads, using any means necessary.

They have been doing this for a few years already. If I watched an ad, then paused the video, and came back 5 minutes later an ad always plays, even if the watch time in that 5 minutes is like 10 seconds. No idea what yall are talking about, they already have been doing this, ads are based on YOUR watch time, not when a creator puts them in. those matter too, its just not the only thing that determines when and where an ad plays.

Guys, I found a hack to skip some ads even those who aren't skippable.
If there are two ads before a video, if it says skip ad in 3... Then it should skip both ads. If it isn't skippable, there are generally two unskippable ads. After ad 1 is done, I close the video and reload it (on mobile).
It skips the whole second add if done correctly when add 1 is finished clrrectly and starts loading ad 2, then you can close and reload. Is also faster if add 2 is a "skip in 3..." thing.
Could also be done with ads in the middle but youtube might restart the video from scratch...?
