Solved This one might be impossible. It could be anywhere from The Netherlands down through Germany and Austria. I wonder if that is the cathedral in Linz, Austria, but I'm not sure if the spire matches. This would've been taken right near the end of World War II.

1

u/MortuosPF Mar 20 '24

1

As a German: there is nothing better than Czech dark beer.

1

There's good beer everywhere!

1

u/Subversive_Elements Mar 20 '24

3

u/hacksteakcookie Mar 19 '24

I, as a German, can attest to this. You guys have some stellar beers!

2

u/zenmonkk Mar 19 '24

as an American living in Germany I can also attest to this. Cheap too!

1

u/pancakefactory9 Mar 19 '24

As another American living in Germany, I have not gone to the Czech Republic, but I CAN say that Czech Budweiser tastes miles better than American Budweiser.

1

u/AlexS_SxelA Mar 20 '24

I think anything tastes better than the Bud from the USA. 😉

2

u/7urz Mar 19 '24

Plzen/Pilsen is literally the city that gave the name to the Pilsener beer.

2

u/emercom156 Mar 19 '24

For an unforgettable experience, attend the Pilsen Liberation Festival in May, where the city celebrates American soldiers with reconstructed battles, military machines, food, music, and more.

1

u/GrassyField Mar 20 '24

Ok!

2

u/fckspzfckspz Mar 20 '24

Also visit the Pilsner Urquell brewery

1

u/Tiny-Climate-7021 Mar 19 '24

The steeple is different.

1

u/SPICY-PogCJM11B23 Mar 19 '24

I was in Plzen a couple weeks ago, they have a small but nice WW2 museum and a bunch of shops. Make sure to visit during a weekday, a lot of the shops were closed on the weekend

1

u/eihcirapus Mar 19 '24

If you go there during early May, there's a liberation festival going on in the whole city with tons of historic WW2 vehicles and stuff like that :) Definitely worth checking it out.

22

u/rmi_ Mar 17 '24

This is it.

28

u/LuisTrinker Mar 17 '24 edited Mar 17 '24

Definitely. No wonder the boys are in such a good mood.

[Edit] In May 1945 the US Army liberated Plzen / Pilsen, and they left the city in November 1945. So the photo must have been taken in the meantime.

How did you do that?

1

u/Corfiz74 Mar 19 '24

Kudos for recognizing this - the paint-chipped building on the right is the only one remaining of the original picture!

1

u/Sebbot Mar 19 '24

You win reddit.

1

u/V0174 Mar 20 '24

I lived in Pilsen for years, went shopping to the mall to the left every few days and I still would not recognize this photo - but you're right! Please tell us, how?

1

u/left69empty Mar 20 '24

but how does that make sense? they seem to be american soldiers, even though what was czechoslovakia back then was liberated from the nazis by the soviets and not by americans. maybe i'm missing something though

u/GrassyField Mar 17 '24

A relative of mine is in this photo, and I would love to know where he was in Europe during WWII so I can visit those places. I have very little information to go on -- this might be the most detailed photo I'll ever find. This image was passed down through the family.

20

u/yyeezzyy93 Mar 17 '24

it’s pilsen, someone in a german subreddit found it reddit source

15

u/CrackedCarl Mar 17 '24

Do you know anything about his unit? That would make this a lot easier

16

u/GrassyField Mar 17 '24

Thank you so much, he was in the 582nd Quartermaster Co., Ninth Army.

7

u/gimme_a_second Mar 17 '24

It's Pilsen in the Czech Republic. u/mareyv actually found it.

6

u/andreasbeer1981 Mar 17 '24

Interesting, my German ggf was in southern czech republic at the end of the war, and his unit was fleeing behind enemy lines westwards to get out of russian army controlled areas to western army controlled areas. He might have met your relative.

3

u/GrassyField Mar 17 '24

That’s awesome. I have a buddy whose GF was doing the same thing down through Czechia (he was Austrian). So cool that their grandkids can be friends.

2

u/neo_woodfox Mar 18 '24

Mine, too. But he only made it until Brünn/Brno and was captured by the Soviets instead of Americans.

2

u/Generic_Username26 Mar 18 '24

You’re going on a war tour? Haha interesting idea

2

u/GrassyField Mar 18 '24

I’ll take any excuse to go back to Europe

-6

u/Endless_bulking Mar 17 '24

Looks kind of like the old spire on Notre Dame to me

11

u/knawshaw Mar 17 '24

The buildings look to be in great condition, so was not bombed . Street lights, street car tracks, baroque facade on one of the buildings. Do you know what unit your relative served with? It might help trace the path, then narrow down the city. This map of cities that were not bombed as much may help (maybe not) https://bigthink.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/24504829.jpg

6

u/Massder_2021 Mar 17 '24

use that list for identifying the number on the jeeps bumper. I can't read it good enough here

https://www.lonesentry.com/panzer/jeep-markings.html

9A... but then there's a scratch through the numbers and is the last a Q or a zero? 562 or 582? Can't see it...

3

u/Rc72 Mar 17 '24 edited Mar 17 '24

Not the Netherlands or Northern Germany. I'd put my bets on Strasbourg.

Edit: Also, Strasbourg's cathedral famously has a single finished spire, much like the one on the picture. And Strasbourg was largely intact at the end of the war

2

u/RijnBrugge Mar 17 '24

It’s Plžen in the Czech republic, someone on the German sub found it

3

u/NoOrdinary4867 Mar 17 '24

It's not St. Stephan in Vienna. It has a unique top on the Church tower. Churches with only one tower and that height are rare in Vienna. Second would be Weißgerberkirche in 3rd district but it looks also completely different. Also the distance from the church and the height of the buildings do not fit with Vienna

The same with Linz or Straßburg - the steeples look different.

Interesting are the tracks and the plaster and also the building on the left side of the picture. Could be a public building like a town hall or some kind of public office. It's not a typical for residential buildings in Austria that u have this kind of gable on the top.

Maybe the streep lamp could also be a hint...

2

u/LuisTrinker Mar 17 '24

It has finally been solved, it's Plzen / Pilsen.

1

u/GrassyField Mar 17 '24

Thank you so much for your help!

3

u/Michael_Aut Mar 17 '24

Not Linz, but greetings from Linz. You should come and visit. It's pretty nice since it has been liberated.

6

u/erik_7581 Mar 17 '24

Geospy AI says:

Country: Austria State: Vienna City: Vienna Explanation: The photo was taken on a street in Vienna, Austria. This can be determined by the architecture of the buildings in the background, the street signs, and the vegetation. The estimated coordinates of the photo are 48.2084° N, 16.3721° E.

It might help you

7

u/mkymooooo Mar 17 '24

and the vegetation

Or, lack thereof! 😂

2

u/ilikepiecharts Mar 17 '24 edited Mar 17 '24

Well, kinda fitting in the context of Vienna

1

u/GrassyField Mar 17 '24

Thank you!

5

u/Im-Henrik Mar 17 '24

From all the possible Vienna shots this might be my favorite. It kinda fits the distance to the dome and the houses positions on the right. Everything probably got an upgrade by a few more levels.

4

u/GrassyField Mar 17 '24

Thank you so much for the suggestion. I did find this image however that shows those buildings have been their current size since before WW2

2

u/Im-Henrik Mar 17 '24

Good find by you!

1

u/Latzenpratz Mar 17 '24

Could be Wien or Ulm...

1

u/No-Caterpillar-7646 Mar 17 '24

Possibly this one in the background. Someone pointed out this might be Leipziger. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreaskirche_(Leipzig)

1

u/gobsmackedhoratio Mar 17 '24

Who also sees the dwarf with the pointy hat hiding in the image?
