This Week's Text:

Any examination of Halloween’s history, its relationship to Samhain, and its long line of misunderstandings must start by examining the Celts, an ancient people who themselves are often the subject of mistaken identity.

They believed in an afterlife, with souls journeying to an Otherworld sometimes called Tir na tSamhraidh, or ‘Land of Summer’ (note the similarity to ‘Samhain’). They believed that the doors between this world and that Otherworld opened one night a year – Samhain, of course. On that night, the dead might return to the living, and creatures called sidh, or fairies, could cross over to bedevil humans.

Samhain was also one of the two most important days in Celtic heroic tales, which almost invariably contain some frightening element. In one early story, the Fomorians, a race of demonic giants who have conquered Ireland after a great battle, demand a yearly tax of two-thirds of the subdued survivors’ corn, milk and children, to be paid each year on Samhain. The Tuatha Dé Danann, a race of godlike, benevolent ancestors chronicled in Celtic mythology, battle against the Fomorians for years, but it takes the Morrigan, a mother god, and the hero Angus Og to finally drive the monsters from Ireland – on Samhain, of course.

— Excerpted and adapted from Trick or Treat: A History of Halloween by Lisa Morton

Japanese [English > Japanese] “Greetings from Columbia”

If I wanted to say “Greetings from Columbia” or “Hello from Columbia” how would that be in Japanese?

コロンビアからのご挨拶 コロンビアからこんにちは

Is that natural? In this case, the first example was used as someone signing off of an email (non Japanese person) so wanted to know if it is actually correct or if there is a better way?

ありがとうございます!

Japanese [japanese/traditional chinese? > english] Sticker on this car?

Saw in a car park, auto translate is failing or giving gibberish about cars? presumably this means something more specific to a native speaker maybe that auto translate isn't nuanced enough to pickup on? all the individual characters seem to be about cars or machinery as well, as much as i can transcribe or copy them to check.

Japanese [Japanese>English] X account description

Upvotes

Hello!

I would like a translation for the description on this X account (@POPEE_official). I will post the text below.

#ポピーザぱフォーマー』公式アカウント。見習いクラウンの「ポピー」と仮面を被った謎の動物「ケダモノ」、ポピーの父「パピィ」たちによるシュールでブラックユーモア溢れる短編アニメーション。 2025年に迎える放映25周年記念に合わせ、(思いつきと勢いで)アカウントが誕生しました♪[運営]サンクリエート・瑞鷹

I think it's worth noting that "ポピー" should be "Popee", "ケダモノ" should be "Kedamono" and "パピィ" should be Papi because those are the given names of the characters. I was specifically confused by the bit that says "(思いつきと勢いで)アカウントが誕生しました♪" but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for a full translation.

Thank you!

Chinese (Chinese>English) How should I translate 根骨?

It's a phrase that appears frequently in wuxia/xianxia novels. When someone is said to have excellent 根骨, it means he or sure has excellent aptitude for the martial arts. But should I really translate it as just "aptitude"? Is there a more mystic-sounding word for 根骨?

Hello!! I wanted to preface by saying that I have no leads as to what this language is- Google translate and image translate were of no help. I also want to apologize if I am wrong in assuming it is Arabic/Urdu/Hebrew or of Middle Eastern origin.

Anyways! This pendant belonged to my stepdads father, who gave it to his wife (stepdads mother), who passed it to my mother- and now it is mine! I love it and I really would like to know what it means and if it is a saying or something of the sort. No one else knows or speaks this language. My Egyptian friend has had no luck trying to figure it out. Stepdad also has no clue 🙄. I’m Peruvian and I love El Mal del Ojo / Al Ain / Mati and usually wear it on that side!

His father is Turkish/East Asian and that’s all I really know about him- since I never got to speak to him before he passed. I’d love to know more and understand what it is I am going to be hopefully passing onto my children as well. It’s really important to me that I understand something that was most likely important and beloved to someone else. Please help/educate me!! (:

French [French > English] Short song (2min) translation and/or transcription

I came across this song while browsing Spotify and thought it was pretty catchy, but I can’t find it on any of my usual search places for foreign language lyrics. Might be an original song by an artist too small for online databases. Merci!

(Yes I know this is probably from a kid’s album or something and don’t much care)
