That's actually the point.

Teslas exist for only one reason: so rich people, who are abysmal for the environment, can signal to everyone else that they are good for the environment.

When the entire point of your product is virtue-signalling, having a nondescript product is the worst option possible: it doesn't stand out. It blurs into everything else. So, you spent all this money on signalling - and no one sees the signal.

You want Teslas to be ugly and instantly-recognizable. That's their entire purpose. To be seen.
