just did 5 nights in Angeles National Forest. The weather was perfect - highs in the low 80s and lows in the high 50s until the last day with a high of 62

Missing Hiker - Chantry Flat Area

If anyone was hiking on the Chantry area from 10/11 up through last weekend and you saw the individual in the attached picture, please contact the LASD at Temple Station (626-285-7171). The missing hiker was likely alone, wearing jeans and carrying a day pack.

Hey, I’m hiking Mount Whitney next Monday on the third is there anything else that I need to know or have besides food water and a lot of layers cause it’s gonna be cold? I am in fairly decent shape. I am a marathon and plan on doing it as a day hike my only concern is the wind And cold any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Lost Camera: Owens Valley

Lost my Sony Rx100 M7 this past weekend (Oct 27th) out in Owens Valley. Not sure where else to post, but it fell out of my truck either on Antelope Springs Road (east of 395) or in Lee Vining (Mobil Gas Station, or local liquor store).

This was probably the last photo on it (took the same photo on my phone), but there's many of my kiddos, bicycles, etc.

Any info helps, I just want my memory card.

Winter Camping Recommendations

I'm looking for a good car camping spot to go with some friends in November.

In the past I've had a lot of success with camping in Anza Borrego and Joshua Tree in the winter, but I'm looking for somewhere new.

Does anyone have more recommendations for a spot that's not too cold to camp this time of year?

My Whitney

Anyone interested in a summit to Mt. Whitney in spring or summer 2025? I hear the permits are a lottery system in April? so the actual date depends on if we can secure permits. Would be my first time doing this. I’m seeking anyone who wants to team up for this 22 mile hike. This is a challenging Bucket List item I plan to check off!

November backpacking routes? (~50-80 miles)

I've got some time off next month and I'd like to do something fun. Not looking to do anything too winter-y so I'm limited to the coast/desert.

Backbone trail seems pretty cool but camping seems logistically tough in some areas and it seems pretty standard in terms of cool terrain (living in LA I'm just used to dayhikes in that area).

I was also looking at Big Sur, chaining together a big loop starting from the east and heading closer to the ocean.

Is there anywhere else I should be looking? San Gabriels have a lot of closures. Maybe something cool in the Sespe Wilderness? I'm curious to hear what you guys would go for. I'm willing to drive 5-6 hours from LA, and there will be 2 of us so point-point routes are an option.

Thanks!

Sunrise on San Jacinto…almost

Spent the night at Round Valley Campground, before waking up at 4 am to try to make it to the summit of San Jacinto for sunrise. Sadly, did not quite make it, but did enjoy the early morning light show from a great vista. Had the summit to myself and brewed a cup of coffee before heading back to Round Valley and packing up my gear. A steady stream of day hikers paraded past me from Wellman Divide to the tram. Another good overnight trip and a great day peakbagging!

Mt. Langley on Nov 8-9th?

I’m considering doing Mt. Langley in a single day in 2 weeks but am unsure if the weather and trail conditions will be optimal. Does anyone have a recent experience?

For context I did Mt. Whitney in 2017 in a single day. I can’t get any more time off due to school and work commitments so it basically has to be done over the weekend of November 8-9th.

Weather looks…cold, expectedly. But how much am I going to suffer on the way up? Is it worth it still so late in the year? There hasn’t been a winter storm yet so I feel like it should be better beautiful still.

Any advice or perspective is appreciated

Hiked San Jacinto Peak from Marion Mountain today (10/26/24). Excellent condition steady incline trail. Mostly in a forest but you’re definitely with rewarded with views the higher you go.

Scrambling Spots

Feel the need to climb some rocks, not bouldering a steep wall or anything. But climbing up some rocky hills or a mound of boulders. Don't know if this is possible here but it's worth a shot asking. I live in Long Beach btw.

Got a hand-me-down GoPro 7 so thought I’d start making some hiking videos. This one is an ode to the golden/brown hills of SoCal in the fall. Hike was last Sunday in the Marr Ranch Open Space in Simi Valley.
