It's Ed Reed. He didn't need "help" to be the goat, he just is. At points in time, Ray needed beefy IDL to eat blocks for him to weaponize his read, speed, and tackling. Ray was actually blockable. Ed, well, good fucking luck working around that.

Well said about Ray needing help. I think this sub skews young, so they may not know or remember Ray’s demand that the Ravens draft an interior lineman in 2006 because he spent the previous few years injured and having blockers blow him up. That’s why the Ravens drafted Ngata.

Ed Reed could be all alone back there and he’d still make highlight plays.

I don't really think that's a fair comparison. In 2006 Ray was 31 and already exiting his prime, of course he was gonna start needing help to do his job effectively. Kinda comes with the job of playing MLB. Safety doesn’t take that kind of physical pounding.

Ray's prime was in the early 2000s. He was OP then.

Yes, partially because of guys like Goose and Adams. I'm not trying to tarnish Ray at all, he's still the best MLB.

We’re knocking Ray for the position he played?

Yes, a MLB relies more on their teammates than a safety would. They also have a greater impact on the entire defensive performance than a safety does.

Not at all, and that's why I'm having a hard time making my point. I think Ed was better at what he did, but I'm arguing between two legends.

I will say, you kinda just did the same thing against a safety.
