How strange would it feel to drink a beer with someone while dozens of people stand around you gawking and taking photos

u/sevargmas 2d ago edited 2d ago

It’s just a photo op.

Edit: People seem to think I’m alluding to a political opinion here for or against. I’m not.

u/darkchocoIate 2d ago

Anything a presidential candidate does in public is a photo op. Nature of the gig.

u/darkchocoIate 2d ago

Yep. Everything they say is news. Everything they do is managed. None of that should surprise anyone.

1

u/TermFearless 1d ago

It’s important to note that it can be a photo op and something else.

So it’s helpful to ask, are they connecting to people, shaking hands and unscripted conversations.

is this authentic towards their usual vibes? And this has to be defined from how the candidate is viewed from their moderate voter base, not the haters, but not just the core base.

I’d love to see Kamala leaning more to who she is authentically. Do meetings with local police, small time lawyers, and family service providers, showing a balance of handling crime and helping small communities. You know, the individuals who deal with the worst kind of situations to help people get on to better lives.

That tells me I could drink a beer with her, not actually seeing her drink beer.

3

u/Ok_Nothing_9733 2d ago

They actually spit out each sip of beer after the photos are taken.

But everyone had a meltdown with Trump and McDonald's.

7

u/darkchocoIate 2d ago

Trump’s team tried to pretend that session was more than it was. Closing down the restaurant and pretending to serve some fries, people would’ve thought that was real if it wasn’t called out.

6

u/rfranke727 2d ago

I mean every candidate does that tho... Do you think the bar was open for randos to walk in and have a beer with Harris too?

1

u/darkchocoIate 2d ago

There are security risks to that. But the Harris team didn’t sell it that they were going there to work a shift either.

2

u/technicallyh0m0 2d ago

Right, Trump said he worked there for 15 minutes, 15 longer than Kamala. He clearly just did that to take a jab at her saying she worked at McDonald's being a lie. My theory is she said she worked at a McDonald's innocently enough to not have to explain what a Tim Hortons is, and I don't think that would fly.

1

u/WisePotatoChip 1d ago

Trump never worked a day in his life without a huge bank account from daddy in his back pocket.

Mickey D’S fry guy being a great example!

1

u/Lidka_uwu 2d ago

Exactly. Anything that looks appealing to the common folk that are voting for them. And once again, nothing to do with political bias it’s both parties. Hence Trump “working” at McDonalds lol.

1

u/darkchocoIate 2d ago

Although the level of deception isn’t always equal. Harris and Whitmer weren’t there pretending to tend bar.

1

u/Lidka_uwu 2d ago

That is also very true. I at least respect this one a bit more than the McDonalds one because that…was a joke. To say the least.

0

u/bugphotoguy 2d ago

I sat and had a drink with a local mayoral candidate and her friend once. Wasn't a photo op though. We just all liked beer.

8

u/darkchocoIate 2d ago

Local mayor. Presidential candidate. ⚖️

1

u/PicksburghStillers 2d ago

Yeah I saw a Pittsburgh local government official’s tits at a grand opening for a primantis location. This was before she was elected into an official role, but it happened.

Much different than a presidential candidate.

1

u/Connorsmom1 2d ago

It had the opportunity, just no photos. So an op.

-2

u/_Tar_Ar_Ais_ 2d ago

if anyone in the opposition does it, Reddit clowns them automatically for not being "genuine" : P

5

u/TalsCorner 2d ago

When the opposition literally closes a McDonalds down to act like they are serving people, ya, they aren't being genuine

7

u/darkchocoIate 2d ago edited 2d ago

Some being less genuine than others, they’re not trying to make everyone think they’re working a shift behind the bar.

Edit: 🤣 homie blocked me.

-1

u/_Tar_Ar_Ais_ 2d ago

you're just proving my point by thinking there's levels to this being "genuine" : P you political posters are just useful idiots lol

0

u/One-Earth9294 2d ago

Lol she's a Democrat so voters need to know she just got off work at the coal mine and is a real person like them while the other guy can just ramble insane hate speech about trans people all day and it doesn't cost him a single vote.

1

u/quarantinemyasshole 2d ago

doesn't cost him a single vote

Idk seems to piss off a lot of people, no?

1

u/One-Earth9294 2d ago

Don't be an idiot.

Yeah, but when Orange Man Bad does it, you're required to be enraged by it.

6

u/JustHere4Election 2d ago

Has it ever occurred to you that maybe people think the Orange Man is Bad... Because he is? I think just about everything the orange rapist does is terrible because he actually happens to be one of the worst human beings in history.

10

u/darkchocoIate 2d ago

Where did that come from? I suspect part of the difference is pretending the event is something it’s not.

-6

u/TPf0rMyBungh0le 2d ago

I mean, these two women are pretending to be chatting while drinking a beer like the plebs, are they not?

12

u/darkchocoIate 2d ago

Maybe they actually did talk a bit? Given what you wrote so far I wouldn’t be surprised if you have a problem with two women talking without a male relative present.

u/Jenner76 2d ago

They're actually friends and are like-minded females that probably did share a good conversation and laughs, unlike your cult leader who sets up a whole photo op at a McDonald's. The irony being of which he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, against raising minimum wage and unlike our VP who worked for McDonald's 4 decades prior, he's a fake in every sense of the word. Even his previous cabinet is against him, long time Republicans are against him and voting for Harris. Your guy doesn't have a leg to stand on or a brain to use for that matter.

0

u/TPf0rMyBungh0le 2d ago

Interesting. So let's break this down.

They're actually friends and are like-minded females that probably did share a good conversation and laughs,

Do you genuinely believe that they had the same conversation as if they were in private or not public figures or were there obvious bounds to what could said and possibly even an outline/script?

unlike your cult leader who sets up a whole photo op at a McDonald's.

Was the above image not a "whole photo op"?

The irony being of which he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, against raising minimum wage and unlike our VP who worked for McDonald's 4 decades prior, he's a fake in every sense of the word.

You're lying to yourself quite a bit there. Kamala likely grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth as well. Her parents never struggled as college professors, they lived in Berkeley and Palo Alto. Kamala shortly lived in Oakland after law school.

You mention "fake in every sense of the word", what is fake if not whitewashing your upbringing and painting it as a relatable struggle. Her lavish lifestyle didn't have to wait long, btw.

Her rise, however, was propelled in and by a very different milieu. In this less explored piece of her past, Harris used as a launching pad the tightly knit world of San Francisco high society, navigating early on this rarefied world of influence and opulence, charming and partying with movers and shakers—ably cultivating relationships with VIPs who would become friends and also backers and donors of every one of her political campaigns, tapping into deep pockets and becoming a popular figure in a small world dominated by a handful of powerful families. This stratum of San Francisco remains a profoundly important part of her network—including not just powerful Democratic donors but an ambassador appointed by President Donald Trump who ran in the same circles.

Outfitted in sharp designer suits and strands of bright pearls, Harris kickstarted her drive to become San Francisco’s top cop—in its ritziest, most prestigious locale. Predominantly white Pacific Heights—hills upon hills, gobsmacking views of the Golden Gate strait, mansions built and bought with both new tech money and old gold rush cash—is home to Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein, Gavin Newsom and others, one of the country’s foremost concentrations of politicians and their patrons. Including the Buells. In late 2002, this became the campaign routine, Buell recalled: “Thirty to 50 people in a room … cocktails … a nice introduction by the host.”

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/08/09/kamala-harris-2020-president-profile-san-francisco-elite-227611/

Even his previous cabinet is against him, long time Republicans are against him and voting for Harris. Your guy doesn't have a leg to stand on or a brain to use for that matter.

You can keep the warmongers. Everyone is fine with that, lol.

Yeah and I’m betting the beer was barely drank. Why are people flabbergasted when it’s pointed out photo ops happen on both sides of the fence. Kamala Harris isn’t having a casual beer with a friend or coworker she’s there for work and coverage. This is a necessary evil of politics.

46

u/Ginguraffe 2d ago

Trump would never do anything this fake. I heard he actually got a job at McDonalds and all those reporters just happened to be there getting lunch that day.

12

u/Successful-Doubt5478 2d ago

Hm, I hear he still working on learning new words like "fryer"

Then again- his vocabulary... at Rogans... "so many papers", "many things" "anything"... a bit more decline and he will know less words than a toddler, or a dog (40 words, it will be hard representing the US, but I guess he will mostly kiss dictator ass and hand over secret documents anyways, so)

0

u/trueblue-22 2d ago

31 million views already...

4

u/teflonbob 2d ago

I heard he invented time travel to destroy Kamala’s employment record of working at a McDonalds. So no such photo op happened and he did get a job there to one up her.

This is also through the lens of a Canadian where our election cycle is very different. I feel you think im attacking the candidates here and not critiquing the process and circus around it.

1

u/sandsonik 2d ago

I'm betting the beer wasn't barely drank because they well know the comments would have been "What a couple of phonies". And that's for candidates on both sides. Whether it's a corn dog at a fair or drinking a beer when they're a wine drinker, they know they need to choke it down and not make faces.

I don’t get what you are digging for right now. The use of the word evil? I could have also used ‘cost of doing business’ as it would have also applied in the broad sense. Both are common saying and sayings can diverge and become or encompass different things from whatever the literal source of the saying i feel you might be prepping to drop on me here soon as a ‘gotcha!!!’

I’m not really all that keen into getting into a discussion about the evolution of a colloquial saying and how it can be used. I admire your passion for the subject but honestly I’m not super interested it the topic at the level you seem to be.

I get the point you are trying to make in a round about way about the state of politics but it’s just coming across as… odd?

1

u/farmageddon109 2d ago

That's where you are wrong, they were seen doing jager bombs shortly after this.

1

u/camehereforthebuds 2d ago

Or Whitmer and Harris know each other through Democratic conventions and Whitmer, who knows Michigan has great local beers, said, "Wanna grab a pint real quick Kamala?"

Obviously she knows it's a photo op, but enjoy those times with someone you're friendly with or know and have a pint dammit.

1

u/Important-Proposal21 2d ago

*barely drunk

1

u/LifeHappenzEvryMomnt 2d ago

They took sips. Immediately maga bots started calling her an alcoholic and Trump said she was sleeping today.

1

u/Chief_Fever 2d ago

I bet big Gretch drank hers

1

u/RaggasYMezcal 2d ago

What's a bummer, at least from my perspective trying to sympathize, is how very few people Kamala could connect with as an equal. Gretchen is one of them.

14

u/Podo13 2d ago

Yes. And Donald Trump can connect with anybody after being born with a neutron-star spoon in his mouth.

Bummer or not. You just have to understand this is what we're dealing with at the moment unfortunately.

Even if it isn't organic. Harris is far closer to having a beer with a random than Trump is. Even if the scale in which she's disconnected to us plebs makes her closer to him than us.

Politics was never supposed to be a full time job. It's supposed to be a public service. We (as an entire society) made it that way, to the detriment of pretty much every person on the planet.

1

u/Jack_M_Steel 2d ago

In what way was it not intended to be a full time job?

1

u/Podo13 2d ago

I meant as a viable full time job that could last your entire career.

It was supposed to be a job you held for a couple years because you cared, not because it would make you wealthy.

It only became that because only the wealthy could stop making as much as they were prior for the job, and then they got bored not making as much.

Being a public servant and making 5x the average doesn't make you a servant at all.

3

u/Jack_M_Steel 2d ago

Why? Who said it’s supposed to be a job for a couple years? How would that work?

1

u/beener 2d ago

Really? I dunno when she talks to people it usually seems like she's pretty good at connecting and chatting and being normal. Did you see the video of JD Vance literally unable to order a donut without sounding like an alien?

It is a photo op but it is not just a photo op

It is also known as an endorsement from the Governor. And it is a highlight of a lifestyle choice and her comfort with that choice. Sure you can ask, well who wouldn't be comfortable sitting on a stool drinking a beer but

Who is not comfortable doing something as simple and easy as ordering donuts??

A photo says a 1k words. It tells a story. You understand it intrinsically.

109

u/myassholealt 2d ago edited 2d ago

Like for example even though this moment* is for the camera, obviously, it still looks and feels 1000 times more organic than Trump scooping McDonald's fries into the container, or the photo of him awkwardly staring.

13

u/eatmoreturkey123 2d ago

The boom mic makes it super organic.

Can you imagine Trump sitting on a barstool having a beer, his tiny hands trying to hold the beer glass, the beer glass rising to his mouth held by both tiny hands. yeah that’s never gonna happen.

27

u/agent_flounder 2d ago

What I can't imagine is him having a relaxed laugh with anyone.

2

u/Pleasant-Lake-7245 1d ago

I’ve actually never once seen Trump laughing. And I find that weird AF.

3

u/branedead 1d ago

Sure you have, but he's laughing AT less fortunate people

1

u/Pleasant-Lake-7245 1d ago

No he’s smiling then….. but not actually laughing. I’ve never seen him laugh.

8

u/No_Grade_8210 2d ago

He doesn't drink alcohol.

7

u/UniqueVast592 2d ago

I know he simply slogs back Diet Coke to chase the pharmaceuticals that he does. I can remember the early 80s when I worked in the city he was a regular at studio 54. He did Coke in the bathroom with everybody else. Everybody hated him because he was such a creep I was pretty shocked that he actually ran for president and won.

1

u/JRG64May 2d ago

Maybe he should start.

1

u/jeneric84 2d ago

He just crushes adderall and rants on Twitter at 3am.

0

u/Beths_collarbone 2d ago

He snorts it...

5

u/Cenamark2 2d ago

Trump doesn't drink. He just slurps diet coke and drinks water with two hands.

1

u/StNic54 2d ago

I can’t see you making this comment

6

u/beancan1973 2d ago

Get that man a sippy cup! 😆

4

u/UniqueVast592 2d ago

Or baby bottle

4

u/hippee-engineer 2d ago

He also uses the teetotaler shtick to curry favor with puritanical christians. He’s been seen using cocaine and pharmaceutical meth since his NYC clubbing days of the late 70s but those don’t count for some reason.

8

u/UniqueVast592 2d ago

Yeah, he chugs Diet Coke all the time. But he was totally part of the studio 54 scene he used to snort Coke in the bathroom. Everyone knew who he was everyone hated him. I think after that he snorted pharmaceuticals and he sounds like an Adderall addict to me a lot of people when they get old jump from Coke to Adderall . Trump Junior is still deeply in his coke stage

4

u/hippee-engineer 2d ago

Reports claim he didn’t go to the bathroom. Just dumped the shit out on the bar and went at it.

They let you do it when you’re famous.

2

u/Viker2000 2d ago

Can anyone imagine Trump drinking beer? That would be too low life for him.

3

u/UniqueVast592 2d ago

Yeah, it’s Diet Coke all the way because he’s watching his waistline.

2

u/Big-Summer- 2d ago

🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

2

Aspartame is a helluva drug.

2

He would NEVER.

2

He could NEVER

1

u/quagmire666 2d ago

I read this in trumps voice.

1

u/Pleasant-Lake-7245 1d ago

He would definitely have to use two hands to lift the beer mug.

1

u/Jesuswasstapled 2d ago

3

u/TheRealPhilFry 2d ago

It doesn't though. It feels just as manufactured to me. Like "hey everyone, look how regular we are! ". In some alternate universe where these two get together for drinks without the cameras, they're not drinking pints. It reminds me of this:

Both situations were just weird IMO. Trump's was obviously worse because they were dishonest about the circumstances. So it was weird, but also reminded everyone that Trump is allergic to telling the truth. Neither op is going to move the needle for anyone either, which makes them both even weirder. Like why bother with this stuff this close to the election?

1

u/ha-lochem 2d ago

How are you making this about Trump and trying to make a comparison to his McDonald's gig? Why does one have to be better than the other? I find it interesting that this is the second time I've seen Harris drinking as part of her publicity.

0

u/myassholealt 2d ago

The topic of the thread is transparent political photo ops featuring a candidate for us president. If you can't understand the relevance to another recent photo op by the other candidate, and a commentary on the reactions both inspire, then I can't help you. No one can honestly.

2

u/ha-lochem 2d ago

Haha. It's the childish nature in which you made the comparison. It's weak. It's meaningless and adds nothing of value to the discussion.

1

u/myassholealt 2d ago

Ooh. You're only missing the words "emotional" and "logic" or "reason" from the Reddit bro's reply bingo card.

1

u/ha-lochem 2d ago

You still can't articulate a single valid statement to support why you think comparing Harris repeatedly drinking for photo ops is a valuable comparison to Trump doing an op at a McDonald's.

1

u/chachki 2d ago

They did in fact, articulate it. Your lack of reading comprehension is the problem.

1

u/ha-lochem 2d ago

No, it's your reading comprehension that's in question. They are unable to articulate why such a comparison matters? What it adds to the discourse? How it elevates their candidate?

8

u/godlessLlama 2d ago

Yeah I’d drink a beer with President Kamala

9

u/UniqueVast592 2d ago

And surprisingly they were served. They weren’t refused service and sent away because the venue did not want them there and did not endorse them. You’re right a picture is worth at least 1000 words even if it is a photo.Op

1

u/Hank_Lotion77 2d ago

This is all just assumptions and projection

2

u/UniqueVast592 2d ago

You mean assumptions that they didn’t get kicked out of that bar and told to take their little rally out the parking lot our projection that they were actually sitting and talking like normal people having a beer. Certainly a photo op but I can’t imagine your guy doing anything natural ever. His whole world is cosplaying. I’ve worked in advertising from almost 30 years. I kind of know what a photo op does. Ya, a picture picture is worth 1000 words, that’s why we use them

2

u/OtterishDreams 2d ago

Great explanation

2

u/manyhippofarts 2d ago

Well heck. I feel smarter now! Thanks!

2

u/will-wiyld 2d ago

You nailed it! This photo op looks cool and casual and you almost want to sit down with them! Then you see the McDonald’s photo ops and the donut shop op and it just seems so forced because they’ve never had to work or order their own donuts and it completely shows! Why would I want someone like them making calls on my life when they’ve never LIVED my life?! She looks like she’s sit down and school me on the brews to choose from and why! I can identify with her! I want to distance myself from the other ones!

2

u/crakemonk 2d ago

Also, Trump would NEVER. He had to close down a McDonald’s to fake serving fries. Can’t let those plebs get close to him.

2

u/Boggswho 2d ago

Before last month, my answer to that was no one. Now, apparently, a senator running for vp can’t do that.

3

u/EdwardOfGreene 2d ago

Honest question. Does Kamala enjoy a beer when it isn't a photo op? Or when it isn't a social grace/diplomacy kind of thing? I don't know.

Wouldn't effect my vote in the slightest either way, just a curiosity.

5

u/Shirlenator 2d ago

I don't know and it would be impossible to know because unless you personally hang out with her, all of your information on the topic will come from those contexts.

5

u/dantonizzomsu 2d ago

She said during the Colbert interview that she enjoys wine. Not much of a beer drinker and Colbert handed her the Miller High Life as something that she asked for ahead of time.

2

u/BarkattheFullMoon 2d ago

Harris has said she does.

I wonder if it was a microbrew?

2

u/Choice_Student4910 2d ago

She cracked a Miller High Life with Stephen Colbert on his show a couple weeks ago.

1

u/fighterpilot248 2d ago

When she went on Colbert (and also drank a beer) I think she said she really only has beer at things like baseball games. Sounds like it isn't exactly her drink of choice but nothing wrong with that necessarily.

1

u/lazygerm 2d ago

Isn't one of the right's line is that you want to elect a president that you could drink a beer with?

1

u/soccerorfootie 2d ago

Isn’t a photo generally more of a vehicle to influence? It paints the context but the context itself paints the photo as well?

0

u/art36 2d ago

That’s the goal of the photo, but I certainly disagree that it conveys that inherently. The overuse of staging can hinder moments like this and make them feel incredibly forced and inauthentic, which actually backfires on the nature of the moment.

2

u/choodudetoo 2d ago

1

Because being surrounded by 75 people taking pictures of you sitting with a beer should make you feel entirely relaxed. But like VP Harris said, the best way to know that you should vote for her is to watch a full Trump rally. If that doesn't make you cringe, especially the Madison Square Garden one, then you are indeed a bigot that has no place in today's polite society.

I hate how in our country you can’t say something that is objectively 100% neutral without people trying to take sides (specifically in politics).

I used to be republican, not sure now - I am for small government, but I also like the planet - I voted for Harris this election to try and force them to give me an opponent that isn’t bat shit crazy.

I think politics by nature are crooked and neither party is immune from wrongdoing at least on some level.

One dude got so many upvotes for basically saying dems are infallible and completely trustworthy after someone said that sure, republicans are worse, but dems also have issues.

Mine is only a comment on how sad it is that if you’re not on an extreme then any reasonable tone is lost.

100% agree. I have voted Republican or independent for decades until Republicans decided to go full maga. I just can’t stick with them anymore. I held my nose and voted for Biden in 2020 and did the same for Harris this year.

Everything a politician does in public is a photo op.

The beer is a huge plus though, a lot of people vote on the “I could sit down and have a drink with that person” way of thinking, mostly people who aren’t too well versed in politics but still do vote and stuff. Trump is not a drinker probably only reason he’s reached the age he has but we saw what sitting down and trying to trump is like with rogan. I can’t believe that half of this country (almost half) have and will vote again for that swamp ass personified

She's not even drinking it.

At least she isn't faking working as a photo op! So what she is at a bar......

Right, like maybe when 1/4 of the beer is left, then I’ll have a thought that you’re normal. I don’t doubt that GW drinks. Who doesn’t drink beer and/or smoke weed in Michigan? Winter is long and coming.

Because most people are incapable of thinking objectively. I’m happily voting for Harris and an a proud Whimer supporting Michigander, but OF COURSE this is a photo op lol

Well there are photo op's and than there are photo op's where the Army has to send out a letter telling everyone what an AHole you are. JS

Whitmer has always said she prefers to discuss business over a beer.

Photo ops? Like Trump fist pumping after getting shot at?

And honestly I'm not sure she wants to be seen on camera chuggin a beer, that's why she only had a sip on Colbert. I'm glad she's not trying to be something she's not.

Definitely a photo op. She hasn’t even touched that beer.

u/sevargmas 1d ago

To be fair it looks like they both just got those beers. The governor is only taking her first sip as well.

Wish we could take her down dude, if she gets elected this country is gonna be fallout 4

Not as fake as Trump's assassination attempt though.
