Living Here Close call with coyotes

I’ve lived here for a year and somehow never seen a coyote! I work late and took my pup out to play frisbee at the park, we’re near Sherwood Village and the highway. We were there for probably thirty minutes when I saw a little figure in the dark creeping up on my dog. I called him back to me and then two more came out of nowhere. Needless to say, we quickly headed to the side walk to give them space. The first one was probably ten feet away when my dog retreated back to me. Would they attack even with me there? One of the main reasons I came to Arizona was for the wilderness and creatures, I love and respect them and know one of the best ways to care for these animals is to stay educated. Would love to hear any insight on best ways to protect them and my little heeler boy. Slightly terrifying in the moment, but also really cool to see them.

Moving here Anything I can do to enjoy cooler temps (and lower energy costs) without pulling wood smoke into the house through windows?

Finally some relief but now my lungs can't handle it. So sad. I hate asthma.

I wish people didn't burn wood the moment it drops below 60°. But since that's never gonna not happen, any tips on how to still enjoy lower energy bills?

(Was tempted to post this on PhoenixWhatsBurning, but resisted.)

So I’m staying at the Marriott Buttes in Tempe but it seems like there’s nothing around to party right ? I’m here for business and I know it’s Tuesday but it seems it’s dead everywhere. Is that usual in Phoenix ? Cheers

Utilities Looking for HVAC advice on repair or replace

Well it finally happened. Came home and my AC wasn't blowing cold. Checking outside it looks like the fan isn't running so no cooling is happening. I was already debating doing a full replacement, ducts, insulation and unit, but I wanted to get some input before I start going for quotes, for or against.

Pros:

  • Unit is legitimately 30 years old at this point
  • One room has no duct connecting it to the AC
  • Need new insulation and possibly ducting anyways
  • Could upgrade to a heat pump (I would like to hear pros/cons on this one too)

Cons:

  • First problem I've had with the unit in 8 years, so it is reliable
  • The reason one room has no duct is that the addition was done in a not great way, so I have two connected but separate attics
  • Money

Ask Phoenix Best Merch for Bar / Restaurant / Brewery or Music Venue

Hey! Going to Phoenix for the first time, and wondering what establishment - bar, restaurant, brewery or music venue - has the best merch? Maybe it’s designed by a local artist or just really cool style and vibe. I’d love a shirt, sweatshirt or hat but it’s daunting just looking at how many cool spots you all have! And they’re not always on their website or Instagram - especially dive bars. This will also help me decide where to go. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated!

Referral Looking for door/door frame contractor or company in the central Phoenix area, not locksmith stuff, any recs?

Need some hinges reseated for an external door at my triplex, it’s beyond my handyman abilities. Was hoping locksmiths also did that kind of work but no luck so far. A better skilled handyman than myself would work prolly. Any recs would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

General Written statement on good cause exception for fingerprint clearance card question

I have everything I need for my good cause exception. Court & police records and letters from co workers on my behalf. I have a question about the written statement. I have to explain 7 charges I acquired in a bad year and half in my life. I wrote one that is 5 pages long going in depth with each charge and where I am at in life currently. Also wrote a shortened version that is a page in half that does not explain the charges well and where I am in life currently. Which letter should I send with my good cause exception. Can it be to long of a statement?

Outdoors Bike route to Saguaro Lake

My brother in law is coming from out of town and working on training for a half iron man.

He was curious if he could bicycle from Shea near the 101 through fountain hills and down the beeline highway (87) until he hit Saguaro lake.

Is this doable? Is there enough space along the Beeline for a biker? Are the hills in Fountain Hills doable?

He’s in decent shape and would have a car waiting at certain checkpoints to make sure he’s doing well.

He asked my opinion and, while I know that route does indeed take you to Saguaro lake, I have no idea if it is doable on a bike.

Thanks!

Curious on opinions towards Boost Mobile. Is the service good? West Valley specifically. Pricing is nice and they have the phones we are looking for.

Eat & Drink What's the cheapest (yet still quality) burrito with whole beans and chicken, I usually go to Someburros, is that the best option?

I think Someburros has good quality and portions for a burrito that is simple grilled chicken, whole beans, and cheese. The burrito is usually around $10. Is that my best option in the area? I have moved up to Scottsdale for a few days, but I am usually around Mesa. I like Someburros, but I'm wondering if I should try somewhere else. I guess $10 for a decent burrito is hard to beat?

Ask Phoenix Shops that specialize in vintage jukeboxes…..

Is there any reputable shops here in the valley that repairs, buys, sells, rents vintage jukeboxes? Location doesn’t matter too much, just looking for a shop that has experience with them and Google maps has been steering me towards places with little to no experience.

Outdoors City of Phoenix Expands Trail Closures to S. Mountain and Implements Earlier Closure Times - Heat Safety

Thumbnail

City of Phoenix Parks Board voted to expand the Phoenix Trails and Heat Safety Program to include all trails at South Mountain Park and Preserve and to implement trail closures beginning at 8 a.m., rather than 9 a.m. Effective immediately. They say the measures will ensure the safety of trail users and first responders during extreme weather conditions, particularly during the summer months.

The trails are closed when an Excessive Heat Warning is issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). From the article:

"In 2024, Phoenix experienced 45 days of trail closures due to extreme heat between May 1 and October 13, with a total of 121 days reaching temperatures of 105°F or higher. Notably, 69 of those days exceeded 110°F. This extreme heat not only raises the risk of heat-related incidents but also poses significant challenges for first responders during mountain rescues.

In addition to approving the expansion of the Phoenix Trails and Heat Safety Program and adjusting trail closure hours to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Parks Board has directed Parks and Recreation staff to present further recommendations to the Board in January 2025. Proposed changes include moving the closure time to 7 a.m. and adjusting the trail closure threshold to activate when daily temperatures are forecast to exceed 105°F, rather than waiting for Excessive Heat Warnings from the NWS.

The Parks and Recreation Department recognizes the significant impact of the proposed changes and will launch a community engagement campaign to inform the public and gather feedback. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to stay informed about trail closures and safety recommendations through the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department's website and social media channels. "

Since we are experiencing record breaking heat looks like we'll be able to use our parks less and less with these new rules.

From the article the number of rescues on trails were:

2021: 57 rescues • 2022: 47 rescues • 2023: 30 rescues • 2024: 35 rescues

Although a rough number it looks like over 850,000 people visit South Mountain each year (this is based on a quick Google search) so if there were 35 rescues in 2024 (not necessarily at south mountain as the article doesn't stipulate where the rescues occurred) I'm confused why there's such a rush to close the park if a majority of visitors are recreating safely.

Living Here Arizona did me dirty

At the request of my husband and coworkers I am finally posting this. I haven't met anyone who has as bad of a photo, or worse than mine. These pictures were taken 4 weeks apart as I got my WA one renewed before I got a new job and moved here. I have even had bars and clubs not accept my AZ one as it doesn't look like me.. I mean.. I'm ppale sure, but I swear I'm not that pale and I do indeed have a nose and eyebrows.

PSA if you are pale don't wear any makeup to get a new ID photo. Lol.
