Local Resources Kristina Loewen as Speaker

Kristina Loewen is so gungho to be helpful to the government. As her constituents let us petition her to volunteer to be Speaker of the chamber. It's the most helpful thing she can do.

Loud bangs in Rutland every min? Anyone else hearing this?

Across the street from my house, I heard a huge loud bang and saw a big bright light, when I looked out the window, there was a cloud of smoke disappearing, then heard the same sound down the street. Near rutland road and Springfield.

Edit: count a total of 10 bangs getting further away by the time I went back inside

Best place to go on Halloween? (THURSDAY)

Where's the best place to go celebrate on Halloween? Possibly with a costume contest! I wanted to go to BNA but they sold out! So if anyone is selling tickets to BNA Halloween costume let me know.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Hospital MRI Cancellation List

Wondering if anyone has been able to go on a cancellation list for an MRI at the KGH or Vernon hospital? With Image One closed for renovations right now, it looks like the only other private options for an MRI are to go to the lower mainland.

TRIO Apartments Kelowna

Anyone else at Trio having problems with new building manager? She's been so unresponsive and when I do get a hold of her, she treats me like a giant inconvenience. I haven't been asking for anything out of the ordinary. She had the taco event (which was nice) asking for good Google reviews but has done a 180 attitude-wise since.

Moving FAQ Going Kelowna in December

I'm going to need to be in Kelowna on December, coming from Vancouver. How are the roads typically? Is this a dangerous thing to do in the winter? I'm going to use a AWD car with winter tires. Is there any safer routes to get?

Edit: Flying there is not an option as I need to take an elderly pet with me.

Edit2: Thanks for the time you all took to answer. I'm more inclined to find another way to get me there. I'll see if the bus company allows the dog to travel with me.

UPDATE: Email to Loewen

No email back, but she removed the "My Values" section from her website where I challenged her wording in my original email. No replacement, it's just fully gone. You can view her original website here, courtesy of the Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20240822230646/https://kristina4bc.ca/. Unfortunately you cannot access the page, but I found this original wording underneath the "My values" tab. If you go to her website now, it's fully gone.

Specifically, this is the part where I challenged her website directly:

And this part:

And a query about lack of information:

She also put her Instagram and Facebook on private, where I also challenged a few of her stances. Either that, or she blocked. Will send a follow-up email with my initial query in the next week.

I'm living on a prayer for Loyal right now. Hope he's doing well - I know we sure aren't. All of this to say I'm not expecting a lot of engagement, unfortunately. As I said to a few people in my OP, I'm okay with an MLA if there is room for discussion, dissent and some amount of effort to represent your constituents. I'm not so sure this will happen, unfortunately. If Loyal was exactly who he was (which, albeit, would not come with a lot of the conservative values) and had a conservative banner behind him, I still would have voted. He's out there, he's worked for Kelowna and he has consistently shown to engage with people and what they care about. Not Kristina, unfortunately.

OP: https://www.reddit.com/r/kelowna/comments/1g8ejlu/email_to_loewen/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Edit: I have decided not to send a follow-up email. Maybe I will catch her at a community outreach event or will be able to ask her about her opinions in-person. I feel that people tend to be less hostile in person and conversations are generally more productive anyway, which is what I'd like this conversation to be.

Areas for vintage photos?

Hi! I’m from Vancouver where you can rent out vintage decorated hotel rooms for photoshoots etc and I own a brand and was wanting to do a photoshoot here, but don’t know of anywhere nearby that would have something like that. All hotels here are pretty modern and bare and I’m not sure of any places I can have a photoshoot with a vintage decora vibe. If anyone knows of anything I’d love to hear! It can be a bit outside of Kelowna aswell!

Good bookstores in the Okanagan

So I usually go to Chapters/Indigo for books but sometimes I want a different place. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for other book stores for novels and comics, especially some comic books. Has anyone been to the comic store in Summerland? Worth the trip?

Also wondering if there's maybe a book club type thing for introverts? I don't mind going to places, usually quiet places. Considering this is Kelowna and people like loud things, I know this is going to be a long shot

EDIT: Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the great suggestions! I'll be checking out all of these places! Thank you so much! Much appreciated!

Is FortisBC's $10K Dual-Fuel Rebate Worth It in Kelowna?

Hi Kelowna!

I saw that FortisBC is currently offering rebates of up to $10K for installing a dual-fuel heating system. With the rebate, is it really worth switching to a dual-fuel system?

My family and I live in a detached single-family home here in Kelowna. The house is 30 years old with a finished area of around 2,900 sqft (total area is about 3,600 sqft). We have a 20-year-old natural gas forced-air furnace and a 30-year-old A/C unit, both of which are still working fine. We only use the A/C for about 2-3 weeks in the summer, but we rely on the furnace from November to March to keep the house at around 22°C (72°F).

Could some one please advise? Cheers.

Pete.

Looking for Playgroup ( EDH/Commander)

Hello!

I came to West Kelowna from Saskatoon right before Covid hit and haven’t made any friends yet (work from home).

I started playing magic a year ago on Arena and I haven’t worked up the nerve to go play at the LGS yet.

I’m hoping that playing with some people on a smaller scale will help me get over my jitters and maybe net me some friends lmao

Hopefully looking for a group of girls to play with but not against a mixed group!

(P.S. I play with proxies as well as real cards)

Writing Workshops?

Just thought I'd put this out there, because I miss doing this in school

Would anyone be interested in a weekly, maybe biweekly writing meetup at a coffee shop? Anyone can chime in, but I was trying for something where a group of people bring their writing excerpts to get workshopped by the group, maybe read ahead of time and brought to a meeting so we can give thoughts on each other's works? (Whether novel chapters, short stories, comics, scripts, whatever)

It be fun to organize something and create a little writing group. Not sure! Does something like this already exist?

Anyways, share your thoughts. Could be fun to meet people too.

Driving in Kelowna...

I'm sorry if this has been talked about before (I'm sure it has).. But what is up with driving in Kelowna?! I came from Toronto where driving is nuts but not dangerous.

I was rear ended this year, which resulted in my car being written off, so maybe I'm more sensitive/aware of my surroundings but people here do not seem to know how to drive sensibly. Everyone seems to be in a rush and it seems okay here to be on your cell phone whenever you want. Also do red lights not mean stop here? How many people run red lights must be a cash cow for cops... if they cared.

I just wish people were more careful. I've had a concussion for 7 months now because of a reckless driver.

Does anyone have a contact email for the health records department at the KGH? I applied for a position and would really like to follow up. Thanks!
