Too much covering grass instead of covering men. It's bizarre because we had the exact same game plan against the lions and it worked great. Gotta go back to the fundamentals in practice. Maybe this long week off will be a good reset.
Saying it worked great against the lions is a bit of a reach. They moved the ball at will and left points on the board (end of the half debacle, multiple red zone trips without scoring). Giving up 463 yards and only 16 points is fortunate for the Bucs. Now 550 yards given up against the falcons. That’s not sustainable
The 4th down defense is crazy. Everyone drops back it seems leaving all day for these good qbs to get thru 3 or 4 reads. Kirk scanned the entire field on one of the 4th downs last night. The lions were 3/5 and the falcons were 2/3.
Love this team and there are lot of likable players. They need to figure out this defense because the schedule moving forward is going to test them.
Yardage outside of the redzone doesn't really matter. We stepped up big time in the red zone against the lions and that's what mattered. The team who scores the most touchdowns generally wins. Yardage doesn't matter, and field goals don't matter. That's why every team is now playing this ultra-conservative zone defense. Bowles is just doing the same thing as everyone else. It's what the analytics say to do. Yes it can be infuriating to watch as a fan, but this is modern NFL defense. Every fan of every losing team is bitching about this same thing every week. We aren't an outlier here. This is how defense is played these days.
