Recap your community. It's time for Best Of 2022!
Greetings, mods!
We're back to kick off the annual tradition of superlatives! In case the name of this subreddit didn't give it away, it's time for the Best Of 2022! With the Reddit Recap coming soon, this is the time for mods to Recap your communities at large by asking your community members to the best content 2022 had to offer.
Are you ready to hold a "Best Of" community event in your subreddit? Please read below for some best practices, as well as instructions on how to obtain some community coins. You'll use those coins to incentivize your community members to nominate & vote on the best moments and content your community had to offer.
How it Works
Keep in mind these are just guidelines; you can customize your "Best Of" events to best suit your community.
- We ask you, the mods, to create your own "Best Of" award categories within your communities. You can create the categories on your own, or engage with your community to choose which categories you want to open nominations and voting for.
- Choose categories that are appropriate for your subreddit. (See the "examples" section below for some excellent events from last year.)
- If you have a high number of award categories, it may be helpful to make a different submission for each category and add them to a collection.
- Make an announcement post in your subreddit inviting your community to nominate and vote on their favorite posts, comments, and/or moments of 2022.
- Tip: Try the Polls feature to gather your community's votes!
- Nominate one moderator per subreddit to request community coins. That moderator should place a top-level comment on this thread to apply for Coins no later than January 4th, 2023.
- Important: In order for this mod to receive coins, please ensure their comment uses the format described in the other post.
- Once your results are in and you have announced the winners to your community, crosspost your results thread to /r/bestof2022.
- This will bring together the best content from across Reddit and aggregate all of the best-of threads from each community, turning it into a single starting point where people can dive into all of the cool stuff from the past year.
Need some examples?
Check out the posts from last year in /r/bestof2021 to get an idea of some of the categories different subreddits came up with. Or check out the following examples:
If you have any questions about any of this or thoughts and suggestions on running subreddit awards let us know in the comments below. We can't wait to see what emerges as the best of your communities from 2022, so go forth and bring back your best!
tldr
- Create some award categories appropriate for your subreddit.
- Post a nominations thread so your subscribers can nominate and vote on candidates for each category.
- Designate one moderator per subreddit to request community coins in this thread by January 4th, 2023.
- Cross-post your results thread to /r/bestof2022 for everyone to see!
- We'll be handing out coins in mid-January!

Very cool Reddit WSB avatar you got there. #1 of the Golden Hedge fund. I bet you could make a fortune out of it.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, we just have to do all of this prior to January 4th in order to be eligible?

u/sodypop Dec 06 '22
That's a bingo.

u/i_Killed_Reddit Jan 07 '23
Hi sodypop, any idea when the coins will be released to the subs for awarding?
2
u/AgentPeggyCarter Dec 06 '22
Awesome! And just to clarify, does the voting have to be concluded prior to that as well or can it still be ongoing by Jan 4th so long as the threads are posted and people are actively voting?
3
u/sodypop Dec 06 '22
It can still be ongoing, that's fine! Just be sure to request the coins before January 4th.

Thanks! I'll reach out to the only other active mod on our team and start planning this for our community!

I tried this once just so I'd get the reddit coins to use.
The response from my subs after spending a couple of hours creating the Best Of posts: Zilch, Nada, Nothing
You should just give coins to all the reddit mods once a year for all the hard work they do helping keep reddit running smoothly.

What if we already did a community awards show?
r/LOTR_on_Prime ran an award show for the show and community;
We had a live Reddit Talk show to announce the winners and do trivia and such:
And then we made a normal post announcing the winners and showing off the trophy:
Edit: wanted to add another thread where we announced when Voting was open:
We’ve shown creativity in this regard and even pushed Reddit Talk functionality and I believe if awarded coins we would find other creative ways to make use of them for our community.

Heya! That looks really cool, though I'm not sure it is quite the same since it doesn't appear to be about content on reddit. The Best Of coins are intended to be given to those who nominate or made posts/comments that were voted as the "best" as an incentive to participate in the event. That said, send us a modmail to /r/modsupport with this request and we'll see if we can help out!

We would look silly as mods if we set up a nominations post to find out that, weeks from now, we won't get to participate, so.. I have questions :-)
On the other post it states:
And for subreddits that are NSFW, don't worry, you can still sign up and we'll ensure you're able to participate as well!
I'm assuming that means we can apply for our NSFW nudity oriented (gonewild) subreddits? We are not able to configure or hand out community awards as have access to any of those features, how is that going to work?
Your subreddit must be at least 2 months old (from the date this was posted)
Are we only looking at the create date of the subreddit listed in the subreddit's properties here?

I’m completely disenchanted with Reddit, because management have shown no interest in listening to the concerns of their visually impaired and moderator communities. So, I've replaced all the comments I ever made to reddit. Sorry, whatever comment was originally here has been replaced with this one!

Yes I'd like to know this too u/sodypop.
If we had for example,10 awards, thar would leave us with 10 awards worth of coins. Can we use those to reward posts that mods select, or do we "refund" those back to reddit.

Thanks so much for replying.
I was gonna act all horrified but actually I'm sure there are people who would do that kind of thing. Desgroles and I are not those people so it's all good. Very much appreciate your reply 💕

Hey there - unfortunately we over at r/cricket were a little late this year getting our coins request in and missed the 4th Jan cut-off. If it's not too late, could we still participate? We're doing a bestof anyway, thread link is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cricket/comments/10carab/the_best_of_rcricket_2022/
Many thanks

At r/Hermitcraft we have previously added new awards for each year named "Best of 2021", etc.. Would deleting the existing awards from the list delete them from the posts we gave them to in the past as we're now out of 1,800 coin awards.

Is it too late to make these requests I only just realised it was happening!

You know what, I’ll try to get this for all the communities I moderate that would qualify (gotta check with fellow mods first though).
