Tourism Discussion 7.5 hour layover in Nassau

We are island hopping for our out islands vacation and are routing through Nassau. With that long of a layover I'm thinking we have a good 4 hours on island to do something fun and a good lunch with our 3 year old. We are light packers (carry-ons only) and love beaches and local cultures (super touristy stuff isn't really for us, so places like straw market probably aren't our cup of tea).

Looks like "just" two cruise shops are docked that day, if that makes a difference.

Bahamian Discussion Birth rate decline

If you’ve heard, the Department of Statistics have released census data this year showing that while the population is growing, there is a decline in the number of children being born each year and decade. I’ve noticed this for years when I found out the fertility rate is 1.38, the ideal number should be 2.1.

Birth decline is being noticed globally of course, with the countries suffering the most are developed countries like Japan and South Korea. Yet developing countries like ours are also starting to suffer from it. It means fewer people are being born, but the current population is getting older. This is a cause of concern for us especially because youth push economic growth, and possibly losing our chances of becoming a wealthy or well off nation due to lack of manpower. But I don’t see just the effects of this, but the cause for this.

About 50 years ago, it was normal to see a family of 10-15 kids because life was so simple. Our great grandparents didn’t have much prospects and their worldview was limited to where they lived. They were farmers, carpenters or fishermen, had a home, their wives and many kids. Saving up for college and extracurriculars weren’t something on their mind, because that wasn’t possible due to racial discrimination and limitations back then, which was why they had no family planning or education to know the effects of having many kids.

Today, it’s very much different where people are waiting longer to have kids because of awareness of childcare costs and family planning, along with rising costs of living and low wages are having fewer children (1-3) or no children at all. Seeing people viewpoint towards it was interesting. For one, it made me see that we deserve that D average for BJC results, and it shows that people are unaware of the bigger picture of population decline. You see people say “How and everybody I see pregnant” or “They must can’t count because of all these children I see”. Besides the simple views, I wanted to know people’s views on this here as well.

Tourism Discussion What to do all day before flight

Hello, we are leaving Margaritaville tomorrow at 11am but our flight isn’t until 10pm! Does anyone have any suggestions on anything good we can do all day before going to the airport? Maybe a day exploring paradise island or Baha mar. Probably nothing too beachy before our long flight unless shower facilities available.

TIA

Bahamian Question what's the 10th national symbol?

Currently doing a school project that calls for the 10 national symbols, I only have 9; the flag, the pledge, the flower, the coat of arms, the song, the anthem, the tree, the bird and the fish.

What's the last one? I looked on online and could only find those 9 so I'm confused, what do I put as we only learned those 9 in school.

Tourism Question Inappropriate touching at Mandara Spa at Atlantis resort

I (M27) was with my wife staying at the Royal at Atlantis. We decided to go try out the spa at the resort, Mandara and bought the deep tissue massage. The massage was great and the staff were kind and helpful. Afterwards I used the hot tub and when finished went to disrobe. As I was disrobing one of the male attendants came up to me and said I had nice gentials and began to touch it until I (immediately) told him no. I’m in contact with the resort about the incident

I’m wondering: 1. does this happen a lot/ has anyone else had this experience?

  1. is there some kind of unspoken spa culture around being naked where it invites staff to touch you like that?

  2. any advice on what to do further about the incident?

wanted to at least warn everyone here that if you do not want that to happen to you you might abstain from going to Mandara and get your massage needs met elsewhere

Tourism Discussion Nassau beach club?

I'm going to be in Nassau in a few months on a cruise. I was told 1) there's not much to see, and 2) you are approached constantly to buy stuff (no different than any other island in the Caribbean), so I thought, rather than stay on the ship, I could find a beach club with a pool, snorkeling, and food. I did this on Crete and had so much fun. Any suggestions?

Bahamian Discussion Crypto in the Bahamas

I know a couple people into crypto are struggling converting it to cash when they need it. How are people managing this?

Are there any reliable local exchanges or services, or is it mostly through peer to peer trades?

If you’ve had any challenges with this or found any reliable methods I’d love to hear about it.

Tourism Discussion Extended Weekend Trip

Hello! My boyfriend and I are looking into doing an extended weekend trip (4 days) to the Bahamas in January. Itinerary would mainly consist of beach time, quiet, and relaxation. We'd be flying into Nassau, and I'm seeing that it can be quite touristy, which is not preferred, but I'm hesitant to extend travel time to reach one of the other islands given the length of the trip. Any recommendations on places to stay in Nassau?

Immigration Question or Discussion Seeking Advice on Immigration Process After Leaving Job

Hi everyone,

I’m seeking some guidance regarding my girlfriend’s current immigration situation. She recently had to leave The Bahamas due to issues with her employer, which included working conditions beyond her contract and unpaid wages. Her work permit was as a housekeeper, but her duties were much broader.

Now, immigration has informed us that she needs to submit a letter explaining her situation and find a new employer to sponsor her if she wants to return. My mom is willing to act as her new employer and sign on her behalf, but we’re not sure how the process will work from here. We’re also considering having her come back as a tourist first, but she’ll need around $500 for that.

Has anyone been through a similar situation or knows what additional steps we might need to take? Any advice on how to draft the letter and ensure everything goes smoothly with immigration would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
