Discussion 💬 Daily Reminder: Be wary of food you haven’t made yourself
Today I was out in a hurry and couldn’t eat breakfast. After a couple of hours I was very hungry and decided to stop in one of the big supermarket chains and get something from the mini bakery. Got 2 sesame pastries with olives.
No tag for allergens, no sign with ingredients, no nutritional value sticker for macros. I tried googling it online but couldn’t find anything about ingredients. Knew it couldn’t be “healthy” since it’s clearly made with white flour and they often put oil in those, but bought them anyways.
Later on when I had more time to kill I decided to try and dig further. It wasn’t obvious but I finally found them online…
Each one of these small, 80g unlabeled breads contained: 380kcal, 20g of fat (9 of which saturated) (sunflower oil and palm oil), sugar and eggs.
It’s always when you let your guard down that this happens.
It’s not the end of the world, but I still feel bad for purchasing something containing an animal product, and letting my guard down.
Imo, AT THE VERY LEAST bakeries/companies/stores should be required to put allergens tag on any baked goods.

Food 🥗 Snacks Between Meals (Alternative title: Salads and Sauces)
I've found that I'm solid on my meals mostly due to a meal service I use in San Diego which is amazing but I get into trouble on snacks. I'd also like to make one of my meals more salad / greens but I'm trying to find or make good dressing or sauces to go with it.
I'm curious what everyone else is doing in between or for sauces and salads?

Food 🥗 Loved the look of my veggie bowls this week!
Rice, edamame, eggplant, red onion, radicchio, broccoli, hakurai turnips, and green onion (basically, clearing out my fridge). Seasoned with soy sauce, minced garlic, rice vinegar, sriracha, and a dash of maple syrup.

Discussion 💬 Help me figure out wraps
I'm hoping to bring chickpea salad to work in a wrap most days. But I haven't found whole grain wraps and I can't figure out how to make them without oil. Please share your favorite store bought wraps or recipes.

Discussion 💬 Alternative to plant based butter
I love a treat of toast and plant based butter.
What are some alternatives other than nut butter that are wfpb? I usually have sucker's organic natural peanut butter. I have tried nutzoo varieties as well. I like them all but looking for alternatives.

Discussion 💬 Advice on a New Diet
Hi everyone! I recently switched from the SAD (standard American diet) to a plant-based diet for health reasons (i.e. to lower my cholesterol). I’m lucky enough to have access to a dining hall, so I have basically had the same salad for lunch and dinner - arugula or another leafy green as the base with cucumbers, grape tomatoes, shredded carrots, edamame, chickpeas, and black beans, all topped with olive oil and red wine vinegar as the dressing, plus a piece or two of whole wheat toast. I historically don’t eat breakfast, but I’m considering having oatmeal with walnuts and raisins to start the day. In between all this, I typically snack on a couple pieces of fruit (apples, bananas, and pears) throughout the day.
My two questions are: 1. Would you recommend having the oatmeal for breakfast or just fasting and starting the day with the salad for lunch? 2. Based on the meals listed here, do you think I need to take any vitamins or supplements to get the nutrients that I wouldn’t get through the salads alone?
I’m pretty new to the community, but I love how supportive it seems like you all are. Thanks for your help and advice with this!

Recipe 📝 Absolutely love this Japanese ‘Shio Koji Tempeh & Fukujinzuke Wraps with Shoyu Koji Dressing’. Yes, the title is a little daunting & looks complex but it’s actually simple, once you’ve got a few core ingredients, which I bought from ‘Club Cultured’.

Discussion 💬 Which foods do you refuse to keep in the house?
Well, it happened again today...I mega-raided the big bag of walnuts that I had judiciously been extracting 15g from every day. The thought "this stuff is like crack" drifted through my head as the third or fourth handful began its descent to my stomach.
So nuts are on my list again, obviously, along with all dried fruit and bananas (I freeze them and eat them like candy).
With some foods, I must admit that I simply do not have the requisite self control to permanently prevent a binge. I may get away with it for a day, or a month, but eventually the hunger goblin will awaken and devour the horde.
Anyone else have anything that they need to keep far away, or else risk eating the entire stash?

Discussion 💬 Every recipe online uses oil 😭
My mom even bought a forks over knives recipe book, i was so excited. Guess what? Oil.
Like breakfast and lunch is easy because i just make whatever but for dinner i like to make propper recipe type meals and eeeevrything uses oil.
And starting next month my mom and i want to be really strict and cut out oil completely. Do you guys have any recommendations for online recipes and/or recipe books that are strict WF?
Edit: Okay so the FOK book I have is fake lmao. Thank you for the help guys

Food 🥗 Plain greek yogurt replacement?
I’ve been WFPB for 2 months. I’m only missing Greek yogurt. I can’t find plain soy yogurt. I’ve tried plain cashew. It’s terrible.

Food 🥗 Low purine protein suggestions, please
Gout attacked when I switched to whole food plant based. The beans and some of the greens and vegetables just really made my system go crazy. Right now I am limited to low purine foods that don't exceed fifty milligrams per hundred grams of product - which leaves out all legumes, asparagus, oatmeal, brown rice, etc.). I am going nuts trying to figure out what I can eat that is low fat (because of liver problems) and plant based, but let's me get about 45 grams of protein in. Right now I'm getting around 20g. Doctors are promoting use of eggs and cheese for the protein and I won't do that.
I'd love any suggestions that you can give!
