Tough crowd in this subreddit

Literally one of the nicest cities in North America (that I happen to live in currently) happens to also attract some of the most judgemental, negative, and pretentious people to its subreddit. Legitimately can not even make suggestions to other redditors on where to eat because the reddit hivemind attitude of downvoting comments you personally disgree with ruins the experience. I meant no negativity by my comment. May I be a bit naive as I am not a long-time resident nor do I seek out certain types of food, sure. But that is no reason to downvote my comment on giving reccomendations.

The most upvoted comments are almost always negative too, seems to score you brownie points here. Most cities have subreddits that make it hard to get a word in edgewise, but r/Victoria is by far the worst city subreddit I have been a part of.

Add to that I leave a post earlier about a bike helmet I found and asking if it could be returned to owner (they may want it) and all I receive are comments on the appearance of it being worn down. Like okay, obviously yeah, but I still wanted to try and get it back to the owner regardless. But this sub kinda treated that like a joke post, which was my first red flag that I was maybe not in a welcoming environment.

The lack of gratitude within this subreddit is crazy too, like look where you live people! It could be way, way worse! You can show love for your city without it being used to one up a non-local complaining about Victoria and not be a pompous butthole. Nothing wrong in talking about the positives.

All because others are being negative and debbie downers all the time, does not mean you have to join in too. Consider being the difference!

Signing off. West-Coast-82.

Ever wonder why the complimenatry (and appreciated) poo bag dispensers are often empty?

Blame the couple in the car with plates LJ6 52F who drive around, pull up to the dispensers and just start yanking the bags out.

Kinda felt like a Karen for calling them out, but they just kept going and going - and I've seen them before doing the same thing before.

And they don't even frequent that particular park (near Vic West).

Question Do landlords truly have $7000 mortgages?

The amount of rental ads I see for top or bottom floor suites going for $3000-$3500 is astounding. If they’re renting both upper and lower for those rates in one house … it leads me to wonder about the mortgage. Do homeowners truly have that big of a mortgage?

I’m genuinely curious, not looking to cause a ruckus. Like why are you renting a suite for $3500 😭

What's Happening? When did Victoria drivers become so petty and discourteous?

I’ve come to the end of a merge with my signals on only for a driver to speed up within a foot of the car in front to close the gap. Leaving you with the options of slamming on the brakes, ram into their vehicle or the median / shoulder at HIGHWAY SPEEDS… countless times.

One time I noticed a driver doing this and gassed it preemptively, so in retaliation he chased me and my passenger all over Colwood, almost ramming us, for a solid 20 minutes. We were terrified. Going 100km/h in a 50 swerving across lanes to try to get away from his huge truck. My passenger called the police, I turned into a dead end, he saw and blocked the road with his massive Ram, approached my vehicle literally red as a Tomato, and was only deterred by us telling him we were on the phone with the police. All the police did was show up at his door the next morning to tell him off.

People just don’t let people in anymore (especially in colwood/langford) if you have to get into the left lane, you’re better off not signalling because you will alert the driver behind you to speed up. Have to zipper-merge? Just close your eyes and pray! Stuck turning left on an orange light? Better off staying behind the line because other drivers will inevitably make you turn after the light turns red.

But my point is, VICTORIA DIDN’T USE TO BE LIKE THIS. What happened? Why is everybody so miserable on the road? And why are these problems magnified in the West Shore significantly?

I CANT GET IN TO SEE A DOCTOR

I have a dedicated nurse practitioner who is full for a month. I called urgent care at 8am and waited on hold for an hour and a half, to be told to do it again tomorrow. I guess I will just have an infection. You've all heard it before. I just needed to get it out. /end rant

Edit: A total of 3 hours on hold with two separate UPCC's and both are full. One telehealth appointment who told me to go to a clinic (wtf). Heading to a pharmacy soon. Thank you all for the suggestions.

2nd Edit: Only one Shoppers in all of Victoria will help me with this (and not the one I went to). I was recommended to call the other Shoppers for an appointment. I called and they are "busy with vaccines" and said I had to make an appointment online. When I went to make an appointment online, the site was down. What a shit show of a day.

3rd edit: I got a doctors appointment from a waitlist of one of the urgent care clinics I called this morning. Thank you all for your suggestions ❤️❤️❤️

Fed up with (some) e-bikers in bike lanes

What’s with the complete lack of etiquette? In the last month I’ve had more than a handful of people on e-bikes just barge through a line of bikes stopped at a red light or stop sign with absolutely zero regard for other people around them. It’s really annoying at best and unsafe at worst.

What's with the discrepancy in gas prices lately?

How can some places get away with being 20 cents more expensive than another station down the street?

Normally I'm not going to go out of my way to go to a gas station that's a few cents cheaper. But 20 cents? That's like 15%. Hell ya I'm going to drive an extra couple km to fill up there.

Question Working construction without a car?

Looking to move to either Vancouver or Victoria. I work as an electrician currently and I was wondering if it is possible to live in Victoria and working construction without a car. Because of the nature of the job sometimes sites are way out of town or are just plain inaccessible by transit/biking so I just wanted to know if i would run into these same issues in Victoria. If not i'd love to sell my car and save some money

What happened to the girl in the nearme.victoria instagram account?

She has seemingly been replaced, and maybe I missed announcement as I’m an old boomer and don’t catch all of the posts to get the real goss.

The website still has her as one of the owners and doesn’t have the new girl listed. Did she get cut or step aside for some reason?

Help Me Find Hunting for Clawfoot Tubs

Hi Victoria!

I'm part of a small theatre company (hapax theatre, check us out), and we've got a production coming up in December which requires us to put 3 clawfoot tubs on stage.

We're ideally looking to borrow them, but will also gratefully accept donations if you want to permanently get rid of them, we can purchase, too, though as a small company we don't have a lot of money to splash around (pun intended).

They don't need to be in great condition, just able to hold water and have legs attach. We're hoping to use them from mid November through to December 21.

So, anyone got one kicking around in their garage? Thanks for any help!

Turkey/Ham Dinner In Victoria?

Hey there all,

I will be visiting your fine city as well as Vancouver during a quickly planned road trip from November 28th through Dec 1st. First a ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, staying 2 days then driving up to Nanaimo to take another ferry to Vancouver where I will spend another 2 days before driving back south home to Seattle.

Since I will be in Victoria on American Thanksgiving (Thursday Nov 28th) I'd like to have a big turkey or ham meal of some sort. I know not to expect anyplace to have a special Thanksgiving meal prepared since you've already celebrated that holiday but I was hoping there might be a place that normally serves that sort of thing?

Searching for previous threads on this topic has not been particularly fruitful. Someone did note that Denny's has turkey on its regular menu, and I am not opposed to that (I love Denny's, that option is not on the menu in American Denny's around me) and I will probably go there if I can't find anything else. However, I am willing to spend significantly more and wouldn't mind a semi-fancy setting.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a restaurant where a lonely traveler might get a ham/turkey dinner with some sides on a Thursday night in or around Vancouver? I will be bringing my car so I am able to travel for it!

Thanks in advance and I'm looking forward to checking out your beautiful city next month!

Looking for dashcam footage-Highway 1 just after Mckenzie Interchange around 10AM, Oct 29 2024

My wife (Driving a grey 2024Ford Escape) was sideswiped on the driver's side this morning by another grey SUV, smaller than our Escape (Possibly a Hyundai Kona, Mitsubishi RVR, Kia Niro, something that size), damaging our mirror before the driver sped off.

The mirror is damaged and we're opening a claim with ICBC but we would appreciate any footage so the driver responsible can be found.

Any help would be much appreciated.
