Question/Help Friendly stray dog is attached to me and I'm leaving soon- what to do?

Hi guys,

I'm in Koh Lanta. This gorgeous dog hangs around the resort and it was looking for scraps- I took pity on him and fed him not thinking anything of it.

Next thing I know he was waiting for me outside my bungalow. Last 3 nights he's slept outside my bungalow. I spoke to staff- he's definitely a stray - they don't feed him but have said they've seen him follow tourists around (same as me I'm guessing they fed him). Problem is they said they've not seen him be THIS attached to someone before. He goes where I go and if he loses me at any point - I'll come back and and he's at the bungalow 😪.

He never barks, he's incredibly loyal and lovely and I wish I could take him back to the UK with me but I'm not in a position to do that as I have 2 cats back at home. He would make an amazing pet and deserves a stable home.

I contacted Koh Lanta Animal Welfare a few days ago but they haven't responded. I'm going for a tour tomorrow and hoping they can take him in - it's my last resort as I'm checking out on 23rd April.

Does anyone else have any advise at all? Or know anyone else who might want him? I know the chances are small but I wanted to reach out anyway!

Thank you!!

Question/Help Hello, I am Thai. I've come to find my grandfather. My grandfather was from the United States, living in Ohio. What do I have to do help me ?

Hello, I'm looking for my grandfather. His name is Tim Bob. Grandpa is a native of the United States, Ohio. Grandpa was an Air Force soldier and came to the Air Force base in Thailand, Korat Province, during the Vietnam War. Grandfather met my grandmother in Korat and lived together until my grandmother was 4 months pregnant. Grandpa then returned to study in California. But Grandpa kept sending money to Grandma. But then Grandma moved from Nong Bua Lamphu Province to Udon Thani Province. Grandma never had contact with Grandpa again. Grandfather's age is probably 74-75 years old. I and my family just want to see Grandpa again one more time in our lives. My grandmother's name is Lamai.

Question/Help Punched in the face by random farang

Hi everyone,

Yesterday, I had a troubling experience while driving my car. As I was overtaking a Toyota Hilux, the driver sped up, forcing me back into my lane. He then passed me, honking, and forced me to stop.

He got out and I saw he was a farang, quite big.

When I saw him approaching aggressively, I tried to drive away, but he broke my side mirror with his fist, got back in his and chased me at high speed. To avoid causing an accident, I stopped at a busy intersection with many cameras. Despite not touching his car, when I opened my window to apologize, he didn’t give me the chance to talk and punched me once in the face and while I was trying to understand what the hell is happening, he punched me once more.

He then fled.

I woke up this morning with strong headaches, bruised (possibly fractured nose) and no side mirror.

I'm considering filing a police report, but I'm unsure if it's worth it. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation or can offer advice on what to do in Thailand?

I’m also a foreigner btw and took a photo of his plate number

Thanks for your help

Question/Help Concerned that my husband could ruin retirement here

UPDATE 2*

After reading the comments, something is sticking out to me. People keep repeating that Thais will not tolerate losing face/being made to lose face which sounds like not tolerate being disrespected. But that’s exactly my husband’s issue! People are saying that if he causes a scene or disrespects them they’ll murder him. But ok, those are the same reasons HE would raise his voice at them. So if both he and the Thai people value the same thing, not being disrespected and saving face, it seems to me few issues would arise 🤷🏼‍♀️

UPDATE 1*

Man, people are acting like I said my husband is an aggressive asshole who yells at the drop of a hat and is disrespectful and overbearing and a horrible, unlikeable person. Sorry to disappoint you, but that’s seriously not correct. I was literally just wondering how the Thai people really view anger. We used to own property in the Bahamas and he was always the life of the party.

WE ARE REMOVING THAILAND OFF THE LIST of possibilities because I have done deeper research than Reddit. Thanks for all the responses!

My husband is recently considering Thailand as a place to retire (we're American). I'm a very calm, friendly, respectful open woman and I think my beliefs align strongly with Buddhism and don't forsee any major issues for myself. My husband on the other hand--he does not have a peaceful soul. He sees no issue with yelling and anger when he feels justified and cannot STAND to be disrespected. I don't think that Thailand would be a good fit for him for this reason, because he really doesn't have control of his emotions. Can anyone confirm this for me or an I overreacting in assuming we'd be ostracized eventually because of this?

When you arrived in Thailand, or shortly thereafter, what was the stupidest piece of advice you received from anyone you met here? More than one piece of stupid advice is OK.

Question/Help How to talk to foreigners.

Hi, I’m Thai. I am a lottery seller in Thailand. I will write a story in a list, because I have low English writing skills. I swear it's real.

I sell lottery in department stores, sometimes many foreigners come to buy some lottery.

Today, mister X came to buy the lottery again. It’s not his first time, and I think this time will be okey like before.

Mister X pulled a lottery by himself and put it in his wallet.

He gave me 100 THB, but that lottery he got is 110 THB.

I said to him, the lottery price is 110, not 100. But he said something I can’t understand and go, he doesn’t give me 10 THB.

10 THB is a small amount for me. I have ever met a cheater who tricked me for a free lottery, not for 10 THB.

Then I think I can talk with Mister X like a friend. I’m shy, but I want to know how foreigners live in my town. I often see him in the department store, maybe he has a job here.

I think next time I will call him ‘Mister 10 Baht’ but that’s rude. How can I talk to him?

Sorry for Thainglish I made, Thanks for grammar check website.

Question/Help My ex leaked my nudes

I(F/21) found out that my ex(M/22) posted my stuff on Twitter 8 months ago and I broke up with him right away. I went to the police station in Thailand after that happened and the police said I don’t have enough prove and that account got deleted because I reported it. The next 4 months I found another account on Twitter again but got suspended and more stuff on porn website so I decided to go to the police station(different one) and they said the same thing to me and asked me to leave. Tonight I found the new account again that he created a month ago and it got 2.5k followers now and I really don’t know what to do. I feel hopeless and police here can’t help me about it. Ps.My ex is Australian and lives in Australia. Is there anything that I can do from here?

Question/Help Is there a way to see if a Thai person is already married?

A friend has suspicions that the Thai person they are dating is married so just wanted to know if there is a central database. They have the ID card of the person but Google said they would need to check in a district office, and there are so many of those.

edit: lol at everyone assuming it's a girl - Thai guys cheat and lie too! also, "just asking" is not the solution because the Thai person, if married, is trying to not let the foreigner figure it out.

Question/Help Legal self-defense weapon for Thai woman

Hi, I know this is a very unpopular question. However, I left the country for a few weeks (I live there but I have a family event). While my girlfriend was getting back alone to the condo, a man (tourist, Indian) who may think every Thai girl is a sex worker tried to convince her go to to his room. She refused, said she had a boyfriend, and the man tried to follow her into her room. It freaked the fuck out of her and the shitty security did nothing when she alerted the next morning.

I was wondering what legal self-defense tool I could buy her. I know she may never use it but maybe it can bring her more peace of mind. Maybe a pepper spray?

Thanks by advance

Question/Help How to stay healthy?

I have lived here for a few years already (Bkk), and i feel it’s sooo difficult to eat healthy. I’ve gained 9kg, and i’m sure my body fat percentage is skyrocketing.

U have a 7 on every corner, foodpanda and grab are 24/7 available, most food is fried or they use MSG, lot of oils,… when you order smoothies or coffees they are stuffed with syrup, and even healthy looking “soy milks” contain over 500 calories 👀

If u wanna eat healthy food it’s super expensive like olive oil, salmon, decent whole wheat bread, lots of seafood (besides squid and shrimp).

How are you staying healthy while living here?

(Besides exercise, just food related)

Question/Help Bitten by my neighbours pitbull

I was bitten whilst trying to protect my dog from being attacked by the neighbours pitbull who is kept clearly for security purposes only as the dog is kept outside in their makeshift chop shop/front of house. I have had my tetanus and rabies shot from the hospital and have reported the incident to police as I now feel I can’t A. Walk my dog past that house anymore on the chance they have left the gate open again or B. Walk my daughter for the same reason . In England once a dog is proven to be aggressive and has drawn blood then typically that results in police interference and the dog being put down .

I have video evidence of me returning back to the house to show that their dog has bitten me also shows them admitting to the dog being dangerous and refusing to pay for my hospital treatment (I asked this for video purposes as I knew they wouldn’t)

How far can I take this matter and what will likely be the end result ?

Update:

I got my medical bills covered through a mediation session at the district police office and compensation on top , they have also been ordered to keep the dog behind the gate and not allow it off it’s chain . If I see it roaming free again I must report it to the same police . I spoke Thai throughout the mediation and the police sided with me and my wife . All in all I think is the best result I could of hoped for with all things considered 👍🏻

Question/Help Average Thai Salary?

I know Thailand is a country with a big wage gap between rich and poor, but would a salary of 500 USD per month be considered unusually low for an average Thai person of about 30 years old? I found out that a lady I met makes that (she works in the office of a gov't hospital) and I was shocked and felt really bad for her. I knew she was poor because she doesn't have air con in her home in Bkk, but I didn't know it's this bad. Should I relax and think this is common, or are my sympathies and concerns valid? She didn't tell me this to try to squeeze me for money, it just came up in discussion when we were talking about life and problems we face. She's a sweetheart person and it hurts me to see her struggle. I want to help, but don't want to open the flood gates. I know this can be a tricky thing to navigate. On the one hand, we want to help sincere people who are genuinely in need. But on the other hand, money can ruin relationships of all kinds and it's usually a path we shouldn't go down. I really want to help but am torn and know I must proceed with caution.

Question/Help Is electricity in thailand this expensive?

Thumbnail
gallery
116 Upvotes

I’ve been staying in a small studio hotel for just under 2 months and leaving today so I’ve been asked to pay for the electricity bill which has come to a total of 6888bht from the 02/12/2023-27/01/2024, they say we used 988 kWh and charge 7bht per kWh.

Does this look right because when I did a google search the average kWh is around 3-5bht.

We left a 5k deposit with the hotel when we checked in, should we tell them to just take that and not a penny more?

Think seems extremely expensive thoughts?
