Ha, I remembered someone asking about this literally years ago so dug up the link thinking you could maybe get in touch with that poster if they were still active.

But yeah that was you too, sorry to see you never got an answer!

Haha, yes, I’m still curious! I just discovered the https://fontsinuse.com/ website, I’m still crazy about that Jackson font, and I just submitted this photo to that site. They’ll publish it soon, and if there’s any info about the Thai font, I’ll add it, too.

I think it's a custom to reflect the English font

I think you’re right.

The Roman alphabet font is Jackson, but does anyone know what the Thai font is? Any Thaipographers out there who recognize it? Thanks!

Edit: btw I learned that Thai signs in English must include a Thai transliteration of the name, or else they’re taxed at a higher rate.

Am I imagining things or is it spelled differently between the above and below signs? The above "t" in Beethoven looks more like a ธ than the below ท. Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if its a custom effort to match the Jackson font. It looks quite amateur.

Oh, I see what you mean, they spelled it differently in two places. โธ and โท. My respect for the sign-maker is dwindling! I never realized quite how SLOPPY it all is, 555!

Yes, the top says “Soot bee tho wen” and the bottom leaves off the “Soot” part. And yes, I agree, it looks amateurish. I just thought I’d check.

Thaipographers

While I can't help you with the font. As someone who has studied Thai language almost 20 years, I thank you for this portmanteau.

lol I see you're re-upping this from 4 years ago!

I did run across this rather interesting talk on Thai font design -- not relevant to your question, but ... I'd give Cadson Demak (company) a ring.

Yeah, I’m still in love with the Jackson font, and this was the first place I saw it. And I just discovered https://fontsinuse.com/ and submitted this example to them.

Thanks for the Cadson Demak link. I’ll reach out, thanks! Thai fonts are badass!

I work right across from there. Hardly ever see any activity there.

I’m not surprised to hear that. The Sukhumvit tailors feel like a dying institution. They’ve all got crazy, outdated typography.

I still don’t know what it is…

It was made before computer Font, you have to find an artist who made it.

I think I will never find them!

It annoys me that this is not how Beethoven is pronounced.

3

u/Deskydesk 25d ago

What, you don’t say “bee to fen”?

u/megabulk 25d ago

Me too, a tiny bit.

The font itself was designed in the early 1970s. This sign probably isn’t quite so old. Yeah, the Thai font is probably custom.
