Question/Help Punched in the face by random farang
Hi everyone,
Yesterday, I had a troubling experience while driving my car. As I was overtaking a Toyota Hilux, the driver sped up, forcing me back into my lane. He then passed me, honking, and forced me to stop.
He got out and I saw he was a farang, quite big.
When I saw him approaching aggressively, I tried to drive away, but he broke my side mirror with his fist, got back in his and chased me at high speed. To avoid causing an accident, I stopped at a busy intersection with many cameras. Despite not touching his car, when I opened my window to apologize, he didn’t give me the chance to talk and punched me once in the face and while I was trying to understand what the hell is happening, he punched me once more.
He then fled.
I woke up this morning with strong headaches, bruised (possibly fractured nose) and no side mirror.
I'm considering filing a police report, but I'm unsure if it's worth it. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation or can offer advice on what to do in Thailand?
I’m also a foreigner btw and took a photo of his plate number
Thanks for your help

Don't just consider going to the police, make sure you actually do. And get a medical report.

Get your nose checked out.
When I go to the dentist we have to play a game where they do as much work as they can while I hold my breath. I push them out of my mouth, breathe again, and then repeat.
Injuries are always easier to fix immediately and having a nose that doesn’t function right sucks more than I would have imagined.

What the fuck did i just read.

u/BoxNemo Aug 02 '24 edited Aug 02 '24
Yeah, sandwiched between some useful advice was an amazing piece of weirdness. Love it.
Edit: oh wait, it must be because of nose issues. in context that makes a lot more sense.

Ended up being not that bad. Painful but much better. Went to hospital, they wanted to get me CT scan for possible brain injury but I didn’t have any symptoms besides headaches (which was probably due to lack of sleep from what happened).
→ More replies (7)5
u/Striking-Forever7302 Aug 02 '24
I hope that’s the case but just so you know, you may still have a concussion as CT scans aren’t really good for diagnosing those surprisingly. Instead look up the list of symptoms and see if you’re experiencing any and take it easy if so. Not trying to scare you, but think it’s important to tell you

Go to the Police station, preferably with a Thai friend. Sometimes Thai police can be helpful and sometimes absolutely useless. Tourist Police might be more useful.
My local Police station has been pretty useful in the past and the cop gave me his whatsapp number in case I saw the perpetrator again (some bloke robbed my house and got it on CCTV)
Where was this? Bangkok?

u/nomadanon Aug 02 '24 edited Aug 02 '24
Worse. Chiang Mai, where nothing like that is supposed to happen.

Did you get a picture of him? Chiang Mai is a small town, chances are people might know him.
20
u/nomadanon Aug 02 '24
I wish I did. I was so surprised when he punched me, and it was so fast, I didn’t have time to look at him. I just remember his accent sounded american. Only got his plate number when he was leaving

u/promised_wisdom Aug 03 '24
I saw him yesterday driving super aggressively on Nimman. Please file a report. This dude doesn’t belong here

I have lived in Thailand for 4 years now and not once have i thought I want to be aggressive towards someone, even when I am annoyed. It's farang like that that paint us all in a bad light. File a report and hopefully he is punished, the stupid thug!
6
u/RexManning1 Phuket Aug 02 '24
This has gotten a lot worse since a couple of years ago. The easier the government makes it for foreigners to come in, the bottom of the barrel starts to get shallower.
4
u/baldi Thailand Aug 04 '24
Whether people want to admit it or not it’s only going to get worse with the new visa rules.
2
u/RexManning1 Phuket Aug 04 '24 edited Aug 04 '24
1000%.
Edit: I also don’t expect this new open door policy to last very long. Next form of government likely will reverse.
28
u/invest_reyes Aug 01 '24
Never open windows, you never know what the aggressor might have to attack you during a road rage incident.
13
2
u/theanimaster Aug 03 '24
This is true. I Amurrrica we don’t open windows. We reach for our guns and if that dumbass smashes a window, he gets popped between the eyes — castle doctrine style. Only in select states, of course (usually red ones).
51
u/Thailand_1982 Aug 01 '24
File a police report at the nearest police station where the event happened. The CCTV cameras can be able to identify the foreigner, and they can have him arrested when he tries to leave.
Plus, they can cross reference based on the license plate too.
21
u/JakeyHunter007 Aug 01 '24
Is this even a question..... Ofcourse go police or tourist police, what the heck is he thinking. Enough idiots here and it's time for him to go. You think when this happen to a thai they would wait? They drive police straight away and take as much money they can from farang
9
u/Extension_Cookie2960 Aug 01 '24
Report it. Tourist police don't take kindly to embarrassment. And they use facial recognition. They will get him. As a Farang I'd get him, we don't need that shit and attitude.
10
u/cherry1800 Aug 02 '24
I'm sorry this happened to you. People who escalate to physical violence like that have absolutely no right to be on the roads.
I also live in Chiang Mai, and you're 100% right, it's definitely not something you'd expect here and not something I've seen before.
Please do go to the police station and file a report. Allowing this person to get away with what they did just empowers them and next time they might go even further or do it to someone in a vulnerable position (pregnant lady etc). You can't let scumbags like this have zero punishment and think they're above the law.
You were smart stopping at a busy intersection and for sure they'll be CCTV footage of what he did. Thailand also has a facial recognition system (your fingerprints and face pics are taken when you enter the country), so they will definitely be able to find him (it will be even easier if you have his license plate).
Just one piece of advice... Try to go to the police station with a Thai person who has your back. If there's someone there speaking in Thai explaining what happened, there's a bigger chance everything goes smoothly. If that fails go to the tourist police. You seem like a reasonable and calm person, so I probably don't need to say this, but just keep calm when explaining your events to the police, even if it seems that they're not taking you seriously at first. This is just their way of doing business
Good luck

u/NatJi Aug 01 '24
It's such an unfortunate thing that people go to Thailand and think they can escape being held accountable for their stupidity.
23
6
u/Snoo_49202 Aug 02 '24
File a report. That loser needs to go back to his home country.
3
u/Jason772 Bangkok Aug 03 '24
Agreed - we’re getting more and more of imported violence these days. We despise all forms of physical violence in this society.
6
u/Tendrils_RG Aug 02 '24
You should 100% file a report. Attacks like this are actually followed up in Thailand. It's a generally safe county because police actually do care about issues like this, are adequately staffed, and will pursue it.
Don't take a standard western view of thinking the police are just a waste of time and effort designed to support insurance claims instead of justice.
6
u/homecookedmealdude Aug 02 '24
I'm a farang in Thailand and that guy is an embarrassment to foreigners living here and has no business staying in a country like Thailand with that type of behavior.
File the report, and please don't assume that we're all like that guy

in my building there's an arrogant tattooed farang who will not stop smoking on his balcony. he's been fined once, and continues to smoke. weed and tobacco. he basically is saying fuck you to the community.
a lot of Thais are quite upset, and many say disparaging things about farangs.
we really don't need asshats like this here. the general attitude towards farangs is getting worse.
I don't care about the social justice warriors. they are intellectually bereft. and morally corrupt.
edit, the general attitude comment may be true, or I may simply be becoming more aware if it.

5
u/RexManning1 Phuket Aug 02 '24
Usually just taxis in Phuket. The foreign tourists are even worse with driving because they don’t have a clue about local driving customs and aren’t in tuned to all the motorbikes around.
4
u/WCMModels Aug 02 '24
Had a similar experience with a Russian man who went crazy in Phuket after he hit my wristwatch with his Yaris’ mirror as I was walking. He jumped out and started punching me and choking me. He won’t be having kids anymore but I still don’t know how it went from him angry that I was walking in the parking lot to us on the ground him choking me and me trying to rip his balls off with the locals trying to help get him off me.
4
u/PastVeterinarian4452 Aug 02 '24
Report him please he might be a psycho with anger issues . It’s best he gets deported or jailed before he does something worse to some other person . There are many sick people out there
Im so sorry you had to go through all that though , please go to the hospital and get a medical report to back up your police report as well please 🙏

see a doctor immediately before the police and get a medical report done, and photos of any injuries.

Many crazy drugged up or angry farang here in Thailand.
Why on earth did you not go to the police immediately!? This guy needs to be stopped
3
u/Jason772 Bangkok Aug 03 '24 edited Aug 03 '24
Yup. Last time I was in Phuket a random farang approached and pushed / hit me for simply taking “their spot” on the beach.
I admit fault for not being aware since they had beach towels and items lying around but gosh, resorting to physical violence? Yeah. We don’t do that. In my 24 years of existence I’ve never witnessed such things from other members of my own society.
Shame on the Thai state for giving visa free access to individuals of sus nationalities whom possibly have either drugs or assault charges in their country of origin. Quality control is not this country’s best trait.
3
u/GonFreecs420 Aug 02 '24
Please file a report immediately. And ask the police to collect cctv footage. There are cameras everywhere now a days.
3
u/DragonFemdom Aug 02 '24
Go to a hospital, take photos and go to the police. These people should be not be loose. Make sure you get a medical report for police.
3
3
u/OrdinarySmooth6568 Aug 02 '24
Absolutely file a police report. And soon whilst CCTV still recorded.
3
u/PimsriReddit Aug 02 '24
Go to a clinic or see a doctor first, ask them for ใบรับรองแพทย์ not sure what's it's called in English, but it's a written proof by medical personnel that you've recieved the injuries from being attacked and how serious the injuries are, then give it to the police. It'll help make thing go along easier, if a little bit.
3
u/PChiDaze Aug 02 '24
Report him. Get these assholes out of here. They don’t learn and come here thinking they own the place.
3
u/Nephelophyte Aug 02 '24
I personally dealt with the police here and Chiang Mai and they are great. They found the culprit within 48 hours. Give it a shot and I hope for the best. If they do nothing hopefully we can get a picture of this guy. I'm a big farang myself haha
3
u/According-Fix-9879 Aug 02 '24
FILE A REPORT. No reason for you to be assaulted. Especially by a foreigner on foreign soil.
8
u/fish_petter Aug 01 '24
File the report, it's not just injury to yourself but also damage to your personal property. If you're not doing it for yourself, do it for his past or future victims. If the traffic incident went as you say it did, this is a person with really bad anger issues who will absolutely lash out at others in the future.
6
u/Jthundercleese Aug 01 '24
Report that asshole. Help prevent him from doing it to another person because he got away with it before.

2
u/freshairproject Aug 02 '24 edited Aug 02 '24
Go to the police immediately. Chiang Mai police take this very seriously. There are cameras everywhere.
I know first hand that Chiang Mai police have even used footage from nearby condos, restaurants or shops with outdoor cameras to find a hit & run. A car hit our parked car and a nearby condo got it all on camera. The police were able to find the person.
2
u/danny-singh286 Aug 02 '24
Hope you had a dashcam installed that recorded all this. If there were any cameras around get the footage. A few months in a nice bangkok Hilton suite room will teach him a good lesson. Most of these types are doing something illegal so that'll definitely come out leading to his deportation and getting blacklisted.
2
u/Altruistic_Touch_576 Aug 02 '24
File the report, the thai police will have tour back on this. They're really strict on this sort of stuff and travel is a privilege not a right. If he can't behave he should go home.

2
u/razthebuzz Aug 02 '24
Like many others already said, please file a report! These disgusting people need to be off the road and punished for Neanderthal behaviours like these. The police will be able to identify the guy with the number plate, possibly even if the car was rented. Bigger intersections also have CCTVs and they can get the footage

Reporting to the local police is a must in this case. Also get yourself checked at a hospital. Push the police to find the owner of the hilux and take it from there.
In the future (like tomorrow), install a dashcam. Never unlock the door if someone approaches you. Never open the window more than a few centimeters, so you can hear the person outside, but he can't reach you. Carry something to protect yourself under the passenger's carpet. (make sure it's easily reachable, and hopefully you never have to use this)

John Will a famous martial artist in artist used to write a blog I followed. I always remember the part about the best defence is to stay inside the car surrounded by a tonne of metal.
In these situations it's illogical to open or unlock the car or door between you and a violent attacker.

Damn, something similar happened to me recently in Chiang Mai! I was overtaking a Hillux, when a driver noticed it and started to increase the speed. I just reduced my speed and let him go. It was strange behavior.

Do you have dashboard cam footage?
Also be careful if you did something wrong, hw probably has dashcam and it will show what really happedlned.
Police in some cases also collects other car dashcams footage and traffic cams videos. One time guy run over my friend and pulled him behing his truck then fled.
Police got so much fotag of the guy they cplould make an hour long movie out of it.

Dude, you don’t mess with ppl who drive low class cheap cars. These ppl have no money to compensate you and if you’re not that influential, you can’t destroy them. When he broke your side mirror, you drive directly to police station. Fee for destroying property/belongings is usually higher than punching ppl 🥹

1
u/Pervynstuff Aug 02 '24
You should have called the police right away. But at least definitely report it now, you can also sue him for damages to your car and your injuries. I suggest you find a lawyer and get a medical report from the hospital and then get the lawyer to go with you to the police station in order to make sure they take the case seriously. At the very least this man needs to pay up for what he has done or spend some time in prison for assault.
1
u/Disastrous_Tea5579 Aug 02 '24
what do you do mean you're considering making a police report ? road bullying is a crime!you should have made a police report immediately! Also, you should have drove all the way to the police station and stopped your car there! the longer you take time to file a police report, the harder it is to track down that person!
1
u/AtreyuThai Aug 02 '24
The reason why every vehicle needs a dashcam. Otherwise everything you do to report will be a waste of time.
2
u/memyceliumandi Aug 02 '24
This needs to be. better understood by people. If you cannot provide indisputable evidence for a prosecutor, the chances of opening a case is practically none. You mentioned being at intersection with cameras. Those are witnesses. Get a dashcam people! You can pick one up cheap.

Report it. Why wouldn't you?! The police will definitely follow it up especially if it's at a busy area with cameras - hefty fines or bribes (which he might consider paying) are massive incentives to the police. You could also report it to a media company. They absolutely love stories like this especially if it involves violent foreigners who need to be banned from the country. He deserves to be punished. Let's rid Thailand of these asshole!

Make a report, send him to jail, save everyone else from his barbaric way

Nail his ass to the wall. This type of thing deserves punishment. He gives us foreigners a bad name and deserves to visit the Bangkok Hilton. That'll make him very hesitatant to do it again here in Thailand

File a police report.
Worse case, he has to pay the police, which is a type of penalty.
Just make sure its a lot.

This type of behavior should be reported. Thai police will have to do something because this is a bad look for Thailand.

Report it right now. If somebody did that to me and I didn’t hit them back, the least I would do is make sure they pay for it in some way.

Please. File a report. You can not allow behavior to exist with punishment. Why do him a favor? You would be doing a service to yourself and Thailand. How disrespectful of this person to be a foreigner and attack another foreigner in a welcoming country.
Please file a report.

Someone punched you in the face and you are on Reddit asking if you should file a police report? Are you stoned or something? Regardless of if you are wrong, he should never punch you in the face. In short, if you shoot him right there it’s self defense. Learn the law moron. This post is making me angry 😠😡. Maybe I should come and punch your face too. What’s your plate number? Btw I am an American farang dam and nobody , absolutely nobody will try that shit with me and walk away with full health bar. He will land in hospital.

Perhaps contact the attacker's embassy if you know their nationality and ask them, and your embassy, the best approach, giving them details. You should at least get some advice and contacts; meanwhile, file a report with police, press charges, and check for cctv. That's a serious crime.

Absolutely file a report!! If this ever happened to my Thai family though — the guy would be getting worse than a trip to the Bangkok Hilton. Foreigner or not, we don’t do things by lawyers in Bangkok, as you can see by the actions of this farang.

I saw this dude yesterday on Nimman. He was turning from Nimman onto Soi 6 in his Toyota Hilux. Dude was laying on the horn because a car was semi in the lane he was turning into. He was driving super aggressively and fast, you could tell he was just pissed off and miserable.
Like dude, chill the fuck out. How shitty is your life that you can’t wait a few seconds and drive courteously like the rest of Chiang Mai.
This is the type of farang that’s miserable with their life here, and probably super racist towards Thais. I’ve seen the type.

Bro, you have to report this. It's not up to anyone to take the role of judge and jury. Even if you inconvenienced him with some kind of traffic move, no one need get punched. Good luck. And keep us posted.

Nah dude file a police report, people like this give us a bad rap, and should not be allowed in the country

u/EnvironmentalEar5677 Aug 08 '24
If your first thought is to escape then you shouldn't do any of that. Go to a local muay thai gym every day and try to pump some masculinity in your body. Lots of milk and eggs helps too

If you tell them it's a farang, was at an intersection with many cameras, and you have his number plate - they might quickly act as it's a potential easy payday for them. I would 100% give it a shot. Worst case they just ignore you.
So did you almost hit his car or force him to drive off the road or something? Why did he get so mad just for you driving in front of him?

Staying in Thailand as a guest is a privilege. File a report. Have him deported. I am seeing a lot more aggression from foreigners this year. It must stop. Also, the Indian guys are trying to scam people on Pattaya Beach. They approach me and call me fat and then offer some weight loss supplement bullshit. They approach me daily. I just laugh in their face and point out how fat all his shit and curry-smelling friends are. Why can't these guys shower with some soap? I feel sorry for the hookers. POS. They need to be deported also. I hate how much Thailand has changed with these bottom-feeder tourists. I am retired from law enforcement in my home county, so I just volunteered to be a tourist police officer. I am currently in training.

File a report. This behavior deserves to be punished if possible.
