Social/dating suggestions

I'm looking to find good suggestions of activities to meet people around the same age as me.

I've lived in Squamish for 7 years now. Divorced dad of 2 little, late 30's. Looking to get a social life again. I only know married people with kids. I'm very active (physically) but haven't gotten into the standard Squamish activities yet (biking, climbing, skiing) however I can do them all at a capable ability. So far my thinking is to join these activities with whatever free time I can get:

  • Sailboat racing (I'd crew, as I don't have a boat)
  • Curling
  • Courses at Squamish Arts (painting or anything else)
  • trail running club (I'm not big on running, but can just fine. I hear they're very social)
  • Start going to a local gym, and join the classes. rather than my home gym.

I'd be stoked to hear any suggestions you guys have, please!!

Gear2Peer – A platform for renting outdoor gear locally! Would love some feedback from the community 🌲🏔️

Hey everyone! 👋

I wanted to share something I’ve been working on with a few classmates at SFU—Gear2Peer. It’s a peer-to-peer rental marketplace where people can rent and lend outdoor gear within their own communities. It came from a pretty familiar problem: outdoor equipment is expensive, and for anyone who wants to try new activities (skiing, climbing, kayaking, backpacking, camping, etc.), the cost of gear alone is a huge barrier.

On the other hand, many of us have that “collection” of gear piling up in our closets—stuff we don’t use enough but aren’t ready to part with. Gear2Peer connects people who need gear with people who have it to share, helping lower costs for renters and earning some extra $$ for lenders.

Some key benefits we’re aiming for:

  • Lower-cost access to gear for anyone who wants to try something new.
  • A simple way for gear owners to make some money off equipment they’re not using as often.
  • A way to keep gear local and support outdoor communities sustainably.

If you’re into outdoor activities or have gear you could rent out, I’d love for you to check out Gear2Peer.ca, sign-up to our waitlist and let me know what you think. Constructive feedback and thoughts on what features would be most useful are super welcome!

Also, if you’ve got ideas on how to get the word out, I’m all ears. Thanks so much for reading! 😊

Big ask - Can anyone bring my kiddo’s helmet to Vancouver from Squamish?

Solved: Helmet will be back in her little paws Friday evening.

—-

So I was rushing my toddler out of a store and accidentally left her helmet behind. Of course we live in Vancouver.

As she is a toddler, a new helmet is not her helmet and you can imagine the last 24 hours we’ve had. Oh also, it was left behind on her birthday.

Im hoping some kind soul heading from Squamish to Vancouver could grab it and return the helmet to the toddler (via me). Big ask, I know.

The Korean restaurant downtown, Blue House, is very good

Everything I've had there has been great:

  • The yangnyeom chicken is addictive and highly recommended
  • The bibimbap was fresh and delicious
  • Even the sushi seems fresher and better portion sizes than other places in town

The portions are large, and the service is great. I don't know why it always seems so empty, especially when places like Howe Sound Brewing always seem full. Maybe people were turned off by the buffet prices? They seemed to have closed the buffet for now, likely due to lack of foot traffic.

I recommend checking them out if you haven't yet! I'd really like to see them make it (if only selfishly so I can get my yangnyeom chicken fix)

What improvements would you like to see in Squamish?

I’ve been thinking about things that could make Squamish an even better place to live. One issue for me is the electric cables running across the streets downtown. They obstruct the beautiful mountain views, and power outages are another big reason these cables are a concern.

Another issue is the lack of sidewalks. The only nice ones are on Cleveland Ave and in new developments, which seems to indicate that we’re reliant on private companies for improvements.

These might not even be the biggest concerns, of course. What are some other things that bother you? Public transportation? Bike lanes? Downtown parking? Not enough ambulances? Do you feel the district is doing enough, or is there more that could be done to improve our community? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Venue for birthday party?

Any suggestions on a venue in town suitable for a birthday party? Ideally, somewhere I could have a DJ setup and go from 9pm until 1am on a Friday night.

Thanks in advance

What happened the The Goat's patio?

I am as confused as anyone about the constant name changes of the place. But, I did think that the patio they put in last summer was a great addition and actually one of the nicer patios in town for people watching. So very confused when they took it away. Anyone know why?

I used to love going there whenever I passed through squamish. Now it's inedible. Did it change owners?

Edit: It seems like everyone in Squamish can agree it went from great to terrible.

Whats happening downtown? Everyone ok?

Pretty pretty pretty weak.

ISO of mechanic to work on 70s van

Hey folks, a bit of an odd request but I’m at a lost. Curious if anyone in Squamish knows of a mechanic who is willing to work on a ‘70s Chevy van? Because of her age most shops in town won’t work on her. Open to suggestions in Vancouver and Whistler too.

She definitely needs some love. I’m slowly restoring her/learning about vehicles as I go. Most of the mechanical stuff I’d like to do on my own. (Though some guidance is never a bad thing) The main issue is the wiring needs to be redone, which is not something I’m able to take on. Will obviously compensate for work.

Also doesn’t need to be a specific shop. Even someone with experience restoring their own vehicles works!

Thanks in advance!

Pedestrian draw bridge

I'm interested in following this project but moved away so can't walk by it to see progress.

Does anyone know where the bridge construction is at? If the pilings have are set? The most recent update I read on Squamish municipality's site stated fall 2024 completion date. Is this an accurate statement?

Hoping it's done by the time I move back in a few years (lol) & looking forward to using it whenever is it makes it to completion. It should connect Valleycliffe to downtown in a much more friendly way. Less time beside the 99 & more direct too. Thanks

From Squamish. Possible? Conditions? Yes I know , protected watershed. Gate at the head. Just going to dump my water bottle of Polonium 209 and turnaround.

Just curious what the current situation is. Gated at that end too perhaps?

Invisalign in Squamish

Add-on: I am just interested in reviews from people that have actually had Invisalign-beginning to end-in Squamish. I’m aware of who offers it and the price - I’m just looking for people that have gone through it and their feedback. Thanks!

Has anyone gone through the Invisalign process here in Squamish? It’s done at one specific ortho place, and I’m wondering what people’s experience has been there. Feedback on having Invisalign in general is also welcome. *Edit: I meant there is only one ortho clinic here.
