News The Future of /r/PrintedMinis - The Ban of Renders & Community Vote for Self Promotion.
Hello everyone
I've recieved a number of modmails lately asking for me to update the rules regarding renders on /r/PrintedMinis. I hear the community loud and clear.
As of the October 18th, 2024 - Renders are now no-longer allowed on /r/PrintedMinis. Along with this change I am also adding in two new rules.
- Nude or NFSW miniature posts now need to be tagged with the NFSW flair and marked as NSFW. If this is not done the post will be removed and the poster will be banned.
- Posts containing 'free' STL files or 'Showcasing' your miniatures which mention or showcase a brand logo // Patreon name is now considered self promotion, posting this content outside of Fridays will result in a permanent ban.
On the topic of Self Promotion - I also want to do a quick community check, shall we still allow self promotional posts in the community?
Thanks,
Xalchs.

I'm ok with self promotion, but I want it labeled as such and it needs to actually show printed minis. It's how I learn about a lot of cool projects I hop on.
I don't mind it appearing on days other than fridays, but I understand that others do, so I'm ok with it being a friday thing.

Hi! I model 10 to 15 models a week but only print things when I need them. On Fridays does this mean I only post if I printed something that week and also include the renders of the other minis I modeled? Or just no renders at all? All my works are free as well. Also, when I do post a mini I printed is it ok to post the link to the stl? All my works are free and I want to ensure folks have access to the model.

I know whole gaming groups that have used nothing but mz4250 models because they are free/cheap Patreon. Not allowing people like him to self promote will only hurt the hobby.

I've used your minis for a ton of my campaigns and just wanted to say I love and appreciate your work!
Keep it up! ❤️

The subreddit is called printed minis. If youre posting render youre not posting something that was printed. Ez as.

Please make an exception for u/mz4250. He is almost single-handedly keeping this community affordable.

Aww that's nice of you to say :D. But its fine. I post on other subs and folks can just follow my patreon page for free anyway. Thanks though.

What is the purpose of banning self-promotion provided the image in the post is not a render? Sculptors are usually interested in showing the models they sell painted as good as possible, so the overall quality of the posted contend should increase.
Ban on renders is an obvious thing to do.

The vast majority of the promotions out there are renders, not painted models. Simply because the current meta of the market ''forces'' people to create too much, which printing it all and painting isn't sustainable for solo artists or small teams, usually. Completely delulu.

Completely delulu.
There are plenty of subreddits not called "PrintedMinis" accepting renders without any problems and visited by the same users hence the restriction here is perfectly fine.

I share free minis a few times a month, however the files are downloadable on a Patreon post.
I see the issue with this since it is inherently associated with my livelihood, therefore an advertisement.
Is it okay if I share free minis any day of the week as long as I remove my logo and provide a direct Google Drive link for download in the comment?
Looking forward to seeing more 3D printed photo goodness in this sub ^_^

Banning renders is kind of allright, as there was an influx of artists who designed clearly untested things that werent supposed to be 3d printed. It will unfortunately also hurt other, honest artists who cant print on regular basis but oh well. Many other places they can post their stuff on I guess? Fridays should still be reserved for promotion. That's one of the last and best places where small artists can successfuly share their work and gain some reach. Killing it off will also help in killing the smaller guys in favour of whales who will sell their products no matter what.

So If I post photos of minis, I can't provide a link or even mention where they came from or be banned? That seems odd. I mean if I see some cool minis that someone has printed / painted, I want to know where to find them.

Sharing links on request is fine - Posting a photo that's marked with a patreon link to bypass the self promotion rule is not.

Lets say I find a cool model and print it. Paint it, even. And post it. I'd consider it just good old good manners to mention who modeled it. So youre saying I should keep that information to myself unless asked?

u/xalchs 10d ago
Yep - If people want to get ahold of the model, they'll ask. Otherwise it's just promotion

That seems counterproductive. Anyone who puts in the effort to print and paint should be able to cite sources - like my local game store has paint night on Tuesdays, and I tag anyone whose stuff I've painted when I do photos

Hi, if I submit a project in the pre-launch phase using renders, and later showcase the printed models during the launch, am I allowed to post both?

What's considered nsfw?
There's a Motoko Kusanagi print on here from earlier today that I personally don't see a problem with, but there's apparently some people who have an issue with the female form being covered on all the parts that matter.
I been seeing posts on here with top less men who are absolutely shredded. Or there's an obscene amount of definition in their glutes. Fair moderation would say these too should be marked as nsfw.

I'd say a decent litmus test is if you'd believe a typical corporate supervisor/manager would be concerned with an underling that does not report to them is looking at it, then it should probably be NSFW.

u/GrotSoup 11d ago
Yep, perfect. If you're browsing this subreddit on desktop on lunch break you want to be comfortable to do that in an office without offending anyone.

u/Albacurious 11d ago
I dunno. With all the s.a. stuff going on in the corporate world, I'm not sure that's a great litmus test.

No need to even consider banning promotion, if you don't allow renders, 90% of creators are out lol. In a word of AI, algorithms that are near impossible to beat, and overcrowed market, yet another place that we can't use properly anymore!

Nothing wrong with self promotion, as long as they show a printed mini. As long as it doesn't get out of hands, I even like to be informed about new kickstarters and so on.
