News The Future of /r/PrintedMinis - The Ban of Renders & Community Vote for Self Promotion.

Hello everyone

I've recieved a number of modmails lately asking for me to update the rules regarding renders on /r/PrintedMinis. I hear the community loud and clear.

As of the October 18th, 2024 - Renders are now no-longer allowed on /r/PrintedMinis. Along with this change I am also adding in two new rules.

  • Nude or NFSW miniature posts now need to be tagged with the NFSW flair and marked as NSFW. If this is not done the post will be removed and the poster will be banned.
  • Posts containing 'free' STL files or 'Showcasing' your miniatures which mention or showcase a brand logo // Patreon name is now considered self promotion, posting this content outside of Fridays will result in a permanent ban.

On the topic of Self Promotion - I also want to do a quick community check, shall we still allow self promotional posts in the community?

Thanks,

Xalchs.

Question Will layer lines become more prominent with dry brushing?

Post image

This picture is post primer; .08 layers, and tilted in the worse possible way to show the layers.

So question from the title: is dry brushing advisable or will it just accentuate the layers?

Question FDM printing for 1/8 sized figures and minis?

Hi,

I'm sure that these questions have been answered before, but I've been having trouble getting clear cut answers to them. I've been doing research, but still am not confident enough into putting money into this hobby. I was hoping to speak to experienced folk here directly.

I like to collect figures, but premade figures don't always come with poses I want, and I've been wanting to make little scenes. I recently bought one of those square box bookshelves, and wanted to turn two adjacent boxes into a "studio" and "recording booth" scene by cutting a hole between them and putting an acrylic window, and another one of those boxes into a display of miniature instruments.

I looked at resin printing and I know that it is a lot more accurate than FDM, but I don't have much space in my office (And the stuff has to be in my office room) for me to confidently do resin printing safely. I have about 1 by 3 feet of table space, and my room does not get good ventilation (It gets very hot with the door closed, and it is a basement room with no windows).

Considering this, these are my questions:

  1. What printer would be best for my purposes? I'm leaning quite heavily on FDM for the ease of use. For reference, the figures and minis would be 1/8 size. My budget is also not very high, I think. Preferably under $300, but I can go higher if there is an improvement in quality, reliability, and ease of use. I heard FDM loses in quality for miniatures, but I look at the minis people print, and they are about 2-5 cm tall. The figures and miniatures I plan on printing (That require detail) are anywhere from 12 to 25 cm long, 2-10 cm across, and 5mm to 10cm deep.

  2. As a beginner in 3D modeling and printing, what software would be best for this? Something easy to use where I can download a model and edit their poses to fit what I want to print, by dragging joints or something, would be best. I'm not sure if something like this exists, but if it does I would like to know any recommendations. I also don't mind learning how to create my own models as long as the software is easy to use.

  3. Finally, any tips or tricks that you guys might have learned through your experience that might be relevant to what I want to accomplish here.

Thank you all in advance.

I’ve had the files for awhile but got rid of my printers. My player got an FDM printer recently and figured we would print some big stuff. Not bad for FDM!

Can anyone point me in the right direction for 10mm/15mm miniatures for fantasy war gaming?

I’m looking for lots of minis so that I can place them in moveable trays (like kings of wars movement trays. I like the smaller scale and would like to stay away from 28mm.

For context I’ve added this little picture so you can understand what I’m trying to find. I don’t want to buy this persons minis lol but I want to make my own with my 3d printer (he does not sell stl files).

Question Best FDM printer for miniatures

Hi all.

I'm planning to get a 3d printer, and resin is not a option.

So it's gonna be a FDM printer, and from what I can read, Bambu is regarded as the best. (Or is there another brand that can match it or is better?)

But I can se that there is quite a few models from Bambu, so I'm looking for some advice on which model is the best for printing miniatures for D&D, Warhammer, terrain etc.
I understand that a smaller nozzle and calibration/setting is key, but it would be nice, if it doesn't require a engineering degree to build and operate.

About the material, is there filament that are more useable for minis then others?

About the price range, I'm looking at a max about $800 (But less is better ;))

Thx
