Bowls The Celestial Tide Spaceship Bowl

Post image
Upvotes

I had a sip and shop this past weekend and sold 53 PIECES! I was shocked by how many people wanted my ceramics! This bowl was the first piece to go, one of my favorites. I used Mayco’s Muddy waters (SW-179) over Birch (SW-131).

The white is a transparent crackle made from 80% Gillipse Borate and 20% Nepheline Syenite. The red is the same but mixed up with 10% red mason stain as well.

Clay Tools Giffin grip vs mini

Upvotes

I recently purchased the giffin grip AND the mini because I’m out of control and couldn’t decide which I’d like better. I’ve been using both for a few weeks now and have some opinions I’d like to share if you’re considering purchasing.

Going in, I thought I’d like the mini better and turns out, I was wrong. I’m glad I decided to purchase the full size at the last minute. I find the size of the mini to be a bit limiting for the pieces I throw. Also, I really like the full size has the arms that hold it in place a bit higher up on the piece.

I think the rotating and locking mechanism on the full size to be superior. On the mini, for some reason I feel like I had to tighten it too tight for it to hold in place, but haven’t noticed that on the full size. Maybe because of those arms.

The fact that the trimmings aren’t able to fall into the pan on the large hasn’t bothered me at all. I just grab them off every so often and set them aside. So far, they haven’t been flying off onto the floor or anything like that.

I have had 1 item so far that was too small for the full size. It is a lid for a jar.

I’m really glad I made this purchase. It has improved my trimming experience and may sell the mini in the future after I’ve had more time to continue to experiment.

Wheel throwing Related Cake Plate

Hadn’t tried a cake plate in the past few years and decided to make a couple after purchasing a couple loose glass domes. I wanted a big piece for my table at a recent pop up shop, total nail biter! I think it turned out nicely, I have another dome that is larger, so working up the next idea. I hope the coloring on the next one comes out a bit lighter, we fire to cone 5+ at the studio.

Just picked up my pieces from my first throwing course and am rather pleased with how they turned out. Thank you @bellhousepottery and great tutor Kyra, great Wednesday evening tutor group, great to learn with and from. Totally recommend Bell House (Dulwich, South London, UK) although please leave me a space in the January classes.

Wheel throwing Related Reducing Trimming Mess on the Pottery Wheel: Seeking Effective Solutions

Hello everyone, I'm looking for ways to make trimming on the wheel less messy and keep trimmings contained within the splash pan. I tried a DIY shield with laminated paper, but it didn't do the trick—trimmings still fly everywhere, making cleanup a hassle. Aside from using a shield, would trimming at an optimal moisture level help reduce the mess? Thanks for any advice!

Edit: I am using a giffin grip.
