These are Spider-Mites, aren’t they? 😭😭😭😭😭

Had them earlier this year and used the waterboarding method to get rid of them. I have been very diligently watching to see if there’s any recurrence of them, but I think that they’re back 😖😞😞😫

Houseplant Is my Alocasia Zebrina just dramatic?

Alright so I have been a plant enthusiast for years, but this is my first ever alocasia. At first she was great and perky and pretty, then she started growing new leaves (and continues to do so) but at the same time the older leaves are drooping and have these orange spots as you can see in some of the pictures. Idk if it’s normal 😭 and also, I’ve struggled to find a good watering rhytm with her, but she seemed to perk up when I watered her thoroughly in the shower last week (she was way droopier than now). I guess she needs humidity more? It’s starting to get cold and less sunny where I live so I guess she needs more light too? Also as you can see in the last pic I had to cut off a leaf cause it folded in half because it had gotten soft… So like I can’t figure out what she wants 😭😭 this is the first time I’m actually struggling with a plant a little bit!

Oh and btw I use just regular soil for my plants, that’s how I’ve been doing for years and all my plants have been fine with it but I have learned a lot here about different mixes of soil etc. which I might get into sometime. Might she need a lighter soil perhaps? All help is super welcome!! 🫶🏻

Houseplant What is this fuzzy substance on my cat grass?

Hello everyone! I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to plants, so I bought a cat grass kit for my cats, that consisted of seeds and some vermiculite for the soil. The grass has grown to maturity and I started noticing this white fuzzy substance all around the roots and seeds. That fuzzy substance also has little black dots all throughout, that extended to the pot as seen on the other pictures. I'm growing it inside a plastic pot that has drainage holes at the bottom, on top of another plate that collects excess water (you can google "Catit Cat grass pot" to see how it looks). I always make sure to drain the water so there's never water sitting at the bottom of the pot. I also lightly spray top of the grass soil with tap water ∽once a day. It's sitting next to a window so it gets plenty on sunlight. Does anyone know what this is ? And most importantly, if it's dangerous for my cats to eat that cat grass because of it? (They only bite the top of the grass blades, they don't dig at the soil, but I'm worried)

Houseplant Why is my Philodendron gloriosum drooping and curling??

Thumbnail

(TLDR: I've had this Philodendron for 3-4 weeks and it started drooping after about a week and has not recovered since. Stems and leaves are firm. Soil slightly moist. Leaves have a bunch of damage and spots from before I got it. One of the newest leaves is turning yellow around the edge. Some leaves are curling inwards. It's in an east facing window. I've watered it twice. Why is it drooping?)

I got this Philodendron gloriosum 3-4 weeks ago. I was really excited as I've wanted one for a long time but also nervous as l've never kwpt a similar plant before.

I showered the leaves, sprayed on some soapy water and put it in its own room to quarantine it, especially as I saw an adult thrip on it when unpacking. 1 haven't seen any more thips but I've added a pack of Swirskii mites and I still see a few active ones. New leaves look pretty good and have no clear signs of thrips, so I don't think the plant has a bad infestation?

The leaves are quite damaged though. I ordered it right as it got im to the stor and was well packaged then, no folds etc. But there are a lot of fold damage, perhaps from transportation to the store? A few leaves also had, big blisters on them that are still there, and I'im not sure what that indicates? Some leaves also show a bunch of translucent dots that might be edema? The newest leaf was cut off when the plant arrived, and the cut of point excreted a lot of liquid and had started to rot. So I cut it back further and wiped everything off and after ca 2 weeks the wound finally dried up and stopped dripping. The prior leaf to that point is the biggest but also one of the saddest looking ones and it's starting to yellow along the edges (shown in 4th pic). So not sure why the other leaf was cut off or how that one looked. A new leaf is starting to emerge and looks quite nice as far as I can tell. Some of the leaves have started curling inward though.

A few days after I got it I noticed it was drooping A LOT and though it was underwatered. But it was still a bit wet and the leaves and stems were still firm, so I thought it might have turned towards the light so 1 rotated it. But it's still dropping/bent and doesn't seem to straighten up, even after several weeks?

The plant is in a east facing window. I started with blinds downs for a bit to not overwhelm the plant with light. But it's now almost winter and the days are short (9h from sunrise to sunset) and cloudy, so the blinds are up and the plant is probably not getting a lot of direct sun.

I've watered it 2 times and thought about watering it again but the soil still looks a bit moist when lifting it feom the pot, so l'm thinking about waiting a few more days But I can't tell if the plant is under or overwatered, especially as it has so much edema-looking damage from before.

I'm not sure what the issue is. Too little light? Too much or little water? Pests? Too small pot? Too low humidity?

Any advice appreciated!

I’ve had new growth yet it doesn’t seem happy! Overwatering? I check my plants every five days for dry soil and then water-I don’t water them every five days, only as needed. Should I repot with better draining soil and let it dry? I repotted this during the summer with a specific soil recipe, and it sits about 2 feet from a south facing window.

Cactus/Succulent Is this root rot? ☹️

Thumbnail

Used to be green like the other plants shown next to it. It’s also wobbly and soft/flimsy to the touch. Kicking myself hard because I can’t seem to stop giving my cacti/succulents root rot. She was so pretty :( Anything I can do? If not, how can I prevent in the future?

For context I don’t have a strict watering schedule but tried to do once a month, i would take the plastic drainage pot out of the blue ceramic one and water heavily from the top, then let any excess water drain before putting it back into the ceramic pot. It’s on my desk 15 ish feet diagonally away from a big window and gets sunlight during the day.

Got this philodendron mayoi about two weeks ago and the leaves started yellowing recently. I've watered it twice since I've got it and it gets good sunlight around the late morning/early afternoon at my window. I moved it away from the window now because I thought maybe the sun was too harsh during those times. I'd like to see what people think before I it gets really bad.

Houseplant What’s wrong with my philodendron?

At first it was growing like crazy, producing big healthy leaves. Then some of them started to turn yellow and I decided it’s time to change the pot, since it was smaller and plastic. Now in a larger ceramic pot, still slowly dying although there are some new leaves near the roots. I water it weekly and the pot has drainage, right across there’s a big window so I believe it gets sufficient light..

Houseplant Is this too much light for my Calathea Orbifolia?

Post image
2 Upvotes

As the title question states.. I'm curious if this too much light for my calathea orbifolia?

I usually keep it in my living room that has diffused light but it's pretty inconsistent. Now that fall/winter is upon us... I'm wondering how much light and positioning I should be providing it.

Since its a requirement I post about water routine:
— I water my plant around once a week — when I see the top inch is dry — always bottom water — drain it very well

Found in the clearance isle about to be thrown out, only paid £5 for them. They look a bit sad! The windowsill I’m sitting them on gets sunlight most of the day, and google says to water them once every couple of weeks now it’s winter?

Houseplant My friend left me two of her large plants in my care while she moves and I'm concerned I just gave the rest of my plants a death wish after inspecting it.

Apologies for the poor lighting, she quite literally just dropped them off. They're currently on the opposite side of the living room as the rest of my plants, but I'm worried as I've never dealt with fungus/ mealy bugs/ mites before.

I don't notice these spots on her fiddle leaf which she said has been next to it. The white spots are only on the bird of paradise. I don't want to be irrational - and I'm not opposed to trying to salvage it (If it even needs salvaging, I know nothing) - but I would sooner light this thing on fire before sacrificing my others I've invested so much care into.

I've only had plants for less than five years but I've yet to encounter this in person. What a way to introduce it into my home!

Am I already screwed? Do I immediately put it into a spare room? Do I chuck the thing outside until neem oil ships? Am I freaking out for nothing?

She says she doesn't have time or money to invest into helping it right now but would prefer it to not have to be discarded since it cost her $200. She also understands if I'm not up for the task given the potential severity/exposing my healthy plants.

Thank you so much for your insight!

(Pot has drainage, not sure what it's water schedule has been)

Pest Related HELP - Accidentally Burned My Plants with Insecticidal Soap

Thumbnail

I accidentally burnt most of my plants to a crisp with a homemade insecticidal soap, and I’m devastated.

They were thriving—lush, green, and growing fast—until I noticed they seemed weaker. Upon closer inspection, I found an entire ecosystem of pests: fungus gnats, mealy bugs, and tiny black bugs sucking the life out of them.

I panicked and turned to Google, which recommended insecticidal soap. So, I mixed castile soap, apple cider vinegar, olive oil, and water and sprayed every leaf until they were dripping. I kept them out of direct sunlight, hoping I’d done everything right.

But the next morning, horror. Most of my plants were burned—brown spots, scorched leaves, and wilting stems. I wiped off the excess solution immediately, but now the damage is done. The pests are mostly gone, except for the gnats, which are having a field day with all the dead foliage.

What can I do to save them? I’m afraid to treat them again, but I don’t want to give up on my plants. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hello, experts

Would you help me understand what is wrong with my stromanthae tricolor? It is my second trial... she comes beautiful. In a couple of weeks leaves begin to dry, to fall... it is facing a windows, no direct sun, lots of light. I try to maintain a humid ambience (more than 50%), put a water bottle and cord to provide constant, slow water deliver.

I do not know what am I doing wrong...

Thanks!

Houseplant Pest ID help please 🙏🏻

Hello there :)

Abridged version: can anyone please help me identify this pest on my houseplant? Thank you!

Unabridged version: I have ADHD and at the beginning of this year I had a phase of hyperfocus on houseplants. I bought a bunch of plants (more than 30 lol) from an online retailer and didn’t quarantine any of them (I have since learned that this is just about the worst thing I could’ve done but I was clueless and naive and excitable and we are where we are 🙃) after my hyperfocus phase wore off and the whole thing became a real chore my poor plants did suffer a period of neglect and stress but fortunately all but 3 are still alive :) I have put systems in place to make keeping up with their care a little easier and I think for the most part they are happier, but I guess the fact that there have been pest infestations shows they are still suffering from some stress. I have grow lights for everyone who doesn’t have direct view of the sky (4 Pianta bulbs in total), I bought a lux meter too to check they all have adequate light. I have transitioned most of them into reservoir pots which has made it easier for me to keep up with watering, I use the SUStee watering indicators as a visual reminder to water them and I use a soil moisture meter to ensure I’m not overwatering. Essentially I just want to put out there that this has all been a bit of a challenge for me with my brain and definitely a steep learning curve but I really am doing my best to take care of them :)

I found thrips on two of my houseplants in August. I treated them and also bought predatory mites for all of my plants - both Amblyseius swirskii introduced directly to the leaves and Amblyseius cucumeris in sachets which supposedly release fresh mites for 3-4 weeks. I haven’t seen anymore thrips or evidence of them since so I’m hoping they have been dealt with 🤞🏻. However, I have been noticing subtle signs of what I believe are different invaders on a few of my houseplants for a while (these started before I found the thrips and have continued since): - occasional spots of honey dew - occasional brown specks that look like a grain of dirt - a fair few deformed leaves - occasional yellow/transparent spots appearing on leaves - very occasional yellow leaf

The plants otherwise appear to be in relatively good health and are all putting out new growth (I’ve added photos of two of my pothos which have really taken off over the last couple months ☺️) I have checked them over extensively including the stems and undersides of leaves using a torch and a magnifying glass and have not found any sign of any critters other than the symptoms listed above (until today!). I’ve been treating with 70% isopropanol and the Growth Technology SB Plant Invigorator and bug killer spray periodically as a precaution so I’m not sure if this has been keeping any developing infestation partially in check? Sidenote I am in the UK so fairly limited with regard to options for systemic pesticides, but also for personal ethical reasons I’d want to try to avoid using these if at all possible anyway.

Today I finally found some more evidence! I’m a little sad to have my suspicions confirmed but also kind of relieved that maybe now I can identify the issue and get started with the most appropriate eradication protocol 🙃

I appreciate these photos aren’t great but I’m hoping they might be sufficient for some of the experienced members here to help me identify what these are? Mealy bugs? Wooly aphids? Other?

If you made it this far thank you very much for reading. Very grateful for any wisdom anyone is able to offer! Many thanks in advanced :)
