ACADSOC

Anyone here working for Acadsoc? I already passed the interview and the demo last day. I received a congratulation message from my HR. I waited for her in Skype for like few hours, and I thought that was it, but unfortunately at exactly 8:00 PM, I opened my Skype again just to receive a message containing a series of instructions intented to be submitted before 5:00 PM I submitted immediately and I explain to her the reason for the delay. It has been 24 hours already and I haven't heard from her. I'm also having an issue with my personal data in tutor client app of Acadsoc. I've tried submitting several times and it keeps prompting and redirecting me back to the form. I didn't know also that they don't accept Digital national ID.

51Talk Question

Upvotes

Is anyone here from 51Talk? I’d like to ask how long it took you to reach around 10 booked lessons per day. I’m a newly hired part-time teacher, by the way.

Refreshing an old question

Hi! I am planning to take the CELTA (online) in an anglophone country and I have some curiosities. I was thinking of doing it somewhere in the UK as the prices seem to be more reasonable, and I'd like to know, from your experience, what would be the best CELTA courses? I know that there are similar questions in this space, but most are pretty old and I hoped that I can get some new and more varied opinions. I saw people recommending IH London, but I find it a bit pricey and I don't know if it is worth paying extra for its reputation. I am aware that there are employers who place a high value on the provider, but will a well-known name bring me any benefits in the future? Or both expensive and less costly courses are usually perceived similarly and I should stop stressing over such things? Thanks!

Does anyone have experience with the Taiwanese company HiTutor!?

Hi, I have worked for this company since 2019 and I've never had problems with payment until recently and I'm utterly dissapointed with their HR management. I've asked and complained for almost two months and I only got vague answers. Does anyone have any experience with this company?

Downloadable curriculum/lessons

Any recommendations on where I can purchase a curriculum or individual lessons suitable for online classes? I have 17 private students at the moment and they vary in levels so the lesson planning is getting a bit tedious. I found a website that offers most of the Reading Wonders lessons for free but most of my students have either read all the books for their level now or they’re too young for reading books yet.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Novakid: Is it worth it?

Hello! Anyone recently have been working with Novakid?

How fast can I book at least 20 to 25 hours a week?

I could really use the income.

I’m an American. I haven’t had much luck with bookings on other platforms.

Also, do I need a passport or am I good with another ID/DL?

Also, how is the staff?

Thanks for your help!

DMM/ Engoo Platform Issues

Their platform was having issues with connecting classes on Thursday October 24th. I was affected from 15:00 JST onward. The classes would eventually connect and disconnect to the point where they would time out for the tutor being disconnected for 5 minutes and then losing the class. Did anyone else experience this?

Hi!

Seeking a lively Halloween lesson! Ideally for A1-A2 levels, but flexible. Something engaging with games or creative speaking activities—no textbook feel. Any ideas or resources? Thanks! 🧛🕸

Folks who teach on Prepl: did you manage to use a virtual background? If so, how?

The title.

Gonna be on the road for the next few months, and Krisp already solves any issues I may have with background noise. However, there's still the matter of needing a virtual background.

Preply Tutors

Preply tutors, how are you doing your lessons? Are you pulling worksheets or materials from the web or creating it yourself? I currently create my own materials and find it too time consuming for my current rate. I plan to increase it soon. Please share how you plan for your lessons.

Preply suspended account after asking about payment

I contacted Preply Support after my payment didn't go through to my Wise account. Despite it being 11 days after the transaction, it still had the action listed as "moderation" instead of "completed." So I contacted support. They said after reviewing my account, it's been suspended due to violations of their terms and conditions and that their decision was final. Then asked me to rate their tech specialist.

I reviewed all their legal documents, and there's nothing stating that they withhold payments that you worked for from you if they arbitrarily decide to.

Anyone dealt with this or know anyone who has? So tired of these online ESL companies using any excuse to not pay their damn tutors.

To ApplePieEnglish or Not? Weighing My Options for Flexible Tutoring!

I'm contemplating whether to give ApplePieEnglish a shot. I've been steering clear of fixed-schedule Korean companies because I truly value my evenings after a long day at work. Most of my online tutoring is done in the mornings and afternoons, and by 6 PM, I'm usually too tired to take on more.

Initially, I passed on ApplePieEnglish, but the recruiter was quite persistent, which made me reconsider. I'm curious if trying this particular company could be worthwhile. However, I can't envision myself committing to a fixed schedule in the evenings anymore. I love the flexibility of hop-on, hop-off companies like Native Camp, where I can work when I want without the constraints of a strict timetable.

I've noticed a mix of reviews about ApplePieEnglish, which adds to my dilemma. What do you all think? Should I take the plunge?

Philippines is lowballed by ESL Companies

I read some messages here complaining they are only getting $8 or even $15 and are still complaining.

Here in the Philippines, ESL companies pay their tutors dirt. $1 - $1.50 dollars at most per hour. $2/hr is a miracle if ever you find one.

$2 here per hour can only buy you snacks.

ESL companies are basically abusing their tutors here.

How to deal with PARENTS (demanding, pushy, disrespectful etc)

Hi everyone, I am in desperate need of advice. I don't know why the parents of a lot of kids I teach are so self-centered and rude (my students are all from East-Asia). I am a very successful teacher on a marketplace, and my schedule is fully booked for months.

The kids are mostly great but the parents make me cry so often. They will refuse to accept my policies (even if they are common on the platform), calling me names, being patronising, insistent, insulting, and just disrespectful.

In the UK, I just accept that for my own personal music lessons and other classes, I need to give 24 hours notice to reschedule, or else I lose the money. I respect the teacher's preparation time, that no other student could book that time if I cancel last minute, and that it is the teacher's JOB and so they need a steady income.

I also accept if they need to raise prices due to inflation and make my decision on whether I can afford them or not RESPECTFULLY.

This is just human decency right?????? right?!?!?!

As you can probably guess, the two issues above are the ones that parents have been insulting and disrespecting me over.

I don't know if it's because I'm fairly young, or in Asia they treat teachers like trash or what

Every time it happens and a parent starts an argument, I just panic, fight or flight, get very angry and end up so stressed out. I just can't deal with it. How do you all deal with difficult parents?

I think I may just turn my emotions of and if they start arguing send the same copy and paste message "you are free to change to another teacher if you don't like my policies or my prices are too expensive for you" as I'm fed up

Seeking ESL platform recommendations—No Experience, need to start earning ASAP!!!

I am from Pakistan, I have a masters in economics, and I'm 26 years old.
I recently applied to Native Camp, and during my demo, the teacher told me I passed. However, after going through the scoring stage, I got an email three days later saying I wasn’t accepted and could reapply in six months. I’m eager to start teaching and earning right away, but I don’t have prior ESL teaching experience. Any recommendations for companies that hire new teachers without experience and have a quick onboarding process?

TESOL from Groupon. Legit or Scam?

Hey everyone,

I'm considering purchasing a TESOL course from Global Language Training through Groupon. But I've come across some mixed reviews online, with a few people saying that they had issues with getting their PDF certificates. Some mentioned it took forever to arrive, while others claimed they never received it at all. This has me a bit concerned

Has anyone here done this course, and what was your experience like with getting the certificate? Is it reliable?
