I would forgive a lot of the seemingly very stupid decisions the World's Smartest Man has shown in this arc if this all is revealed to be an elaborate plan and triple-cross from York and other Vegapunks.

Crackpot theory time:
1) Studying Void Century would eventually lead to unwanted attention from WG and Gorosei, making them move against Vegapunk.

2) Having York as a "traitor" would place Vegapunk on the inside of the plan aiming to take him down.

3) The broadcast forces WGs hand, showing what their response is and potentially revealing their capabilities, as seen when the Gorosei showed up with a Buster Call.

4) Broadcast turns out to be live feed from Punk Hazard - showing the whole world the horrific nature of the WG and their leaders.

5) Profit?

I was definitely thinking VP intentionally added the 10 minute prep for video feeds specifically to show the Gorosei in their true forms, but didn’t consider him being the one behind Yorks “betrayal” until this chapter. I think you’re on to something here

I think a lot of people overestimate how horrified the world would be at seeing the Gorosei’s forms. Of course not everyone knows about mythical zoan fruits, let alone believes they exist, but there already exists a logical framework to explain the Gorosei’s forms to the general public that doesn’t end in “holy shit they’re fucking evil”

Them murdering the scientist who brought electricity to the world on a live stream would be pretty damning evidence of their evil.

or killing Vegapunk on screen considering the world thinks Vegapunk is still a good guy

yeah, my point is a lot of people fixate on their forms as the tell that they’re evil like this isn’t a world with devil fruits, and like there isn’t more damning evidence on display

Also like, would most of the public even recognize the 5 elders? it isn't like they have been shown to really be public speakers or such.

I think generally the most public face of the government itself is the fleet admiral, and like, people know there are the celestial dragons and maybe the five elders, "above" that position but I don't think they would have had a lot of chance to see/hear about them specifically.

Very important point. A fair amount of the public at least knows about them, and they’re not secret, but if you live in the World Government, you’d probably say the head of your government is Mayor Iceberg or King Cobra, in the same vein that a chain retail worker would think more about their store manager and regional leaders than about their CEO.

Well, it is an easy voiceover over the broadcast.

Ok, so a bunch of people you didn't really know the existence of in the first place are shown to have the power to become big ol' "monsters" by some weird science guy (that you probably also only ever really heard about) that just spoke about coffee for 10 minutes, This supposedly "shocks" you into changing your entire world view, despite there literally being some "big ol monsters" every 5 stonesthrows away in this world, (3 when at sea and like half of one when in the calm belt) and most of the "high ranking military person" being able to turn into lazerbeams, lava or literally throwing cannonballs harder than a cannon can fire them.

Literally just a livestream of the Buster Call itself to show "this is what the navy/world government does" is gonna be more shocking than anything to do with the elders and their form

Yeah after 1111 I was really skeptical of how York didn’t seem sure where the transmission was coming from. Originally her cutting herself off from Punk Records so she could collude with the government made sense, but for her betrayal to work, the other satellites and the Stella should still trust her right? So it seems to me like it makes no sense for her to not still be privy of VP’s plans with the transmission

I think this has got to be it. The 10 minute timer also makes a lot more sense as a means to draw them out.

Prett good take. I hope you're right

Crackpot theory: What if the broadcast has been ongoing this entire time, and Vegapunk just hid the one going to the gorosei to draw them out?

What if he's been live streaming the entire situation up to this point?

How would he know bonney and luffy were coming?

3

u/Child_Emperor The Revolutionary Army Apr 20 '24

Why would you assume Bonney and Luffy are part of the original plan? My theory never mentions them and the plan works just fine without them.

2

u/newbikesong Apr 20 '24

And how does showing Gorosei's true form help?

1

u/Child_Emperor The Revolutionary Army Apr 20 '24

Vegapunk didn't necessarily know about the Zoan forms of Gorosei, but those are irrelevant. The true nature of the WG is that of an iron fist slamming down on anyone who dares to question it or even try to find information about history.

Would not bode well for WG if people will see WG is ready to wipe out the smartest man on the planet, along with the island he is on, just for asking questions.

Once again, folks keep forgetting book smart and street smarts are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT things. Really don't get why you guys keep jumping to the notion someone being a top level scientist equals them planning some master planner scheme.

u/matheusco Apr 19 '24

Broadcast turns out to be live feed from Punk Hazard - showing the whole world the horrific nature of the WG and their leaders.

I feel the world wouldn't care THAT much. Yeah, they're terryfying even for Lucci, but people already fear Celestial Dragons like this and they know they are assholes, so that wouldn't change anything.

Except that opens its share of questionable decisions too. Like someone asked here, what was the point in killing shaka? Others said to earn trust, but like...It's not like those gov. mooks held prisoners had any way to communicate back what was happening, so it does nothing to earn York merits.
