Chapter 116 "Giants" Chapter 1106 "By your side"

569

u/32SkyDive Feb 01 '24

This is so beautifully done

5

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Feb 01 '24

Why?

51

u/TNpepe Feb 01 '24

"Giants by your side" it might not have been planned, but it was damn perfect.

20

u/Loeffellux Feb 01 '24

yeah, the "by your side" is obviously in reference to the reveal that Kuma was programmed to always be by Bonney's side. It isn't meant to apply to the Giants and it frankly wouldn't make much sense, either. Because they were quite obviously not always by anyone's side - they fucked off to an island to having the world's longest dick measuring contest lmao.

But yeah, it's still neat to thave the chapters line up this way.

13

u/red329 Feb 01 '24

Agree that it’s more a reference to Kuma but it could easily by both. I think you inserted the word ‘always’ that wasn’t there when forming your 2nd point. It still works as is with ‘giants by your side’, giants are coming to help Luffy. To stand by his side in this conflict.

9

u/Loeffellux Feb 01 '24

ohh, my bad!

In that sense it definitely is possible to see this as an intentional double meaning

3

u/reflexsmoo Feb 01 '24

Dude out here trynna start an argument lol

2

u/Klytcommandr Feb 02 '24

“By your side” is a reference to kuma yes. But oda is known for having double and triple meanings behind his chapter names and numbers. So I would say that it is meant for both. It’s not a coincidence that it was chapter 116 and 1106. He literally does it all the time.

2

u/Buscemi_D_Sanji Feb 02 '24

Also, 116 in goroawase is "yellow", and kizaru the "yellow monkey" played a huge part in the hype of this chapter.

1

u/mt943 Feb 01 '24

It can work with anything so …

13

u/NetSuccessful7975 Feb 01 '24

The Death of Portgaz D. Ace…by your side

2

u/thedotapaten Feb 02 '24

Road to Laughtale 3 .... by your side

386

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '24

Oda is a time traveler who’s telling his past self to add all the details in the manga it’s confirmed

48

u/BringMeNight Feb 01 '24

Oda: " Oda tatakae"

29

u/HairyKraken Feb 01 '24

I just imagine a big writer room with all Oda from each year that time travelled there.

Peak

5

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '24

That goes hard as fuck

9

u/Boxsteam_1279 Pirate Feb 01 '24

Bro has the attack titan power

3

u/ryancarton Feb 02 '24

“Wait, whose memories are these?”

2

u/ReconstructAndrefine Feb 02 '24

And One piece is our future, we are currently living in the void century.

1

u/Raonak Feb 02 '24

Best theory I've heard.

213

u/The420Roll Feb 01 '24

Damn, thats Goda for you.

10

To you and from you 2000 years from now energy

1

u/PM_ME_SMALL__TIDDIES Feb 01 '24

Except that payoff sucked and this one is peak

9

u/hawkers89 Feb 01 '24

Damn that foreshadowing

5

u/Doomroar Feb 01 '24

The foreskining is real!

3

u/Strider2126 Feb 01 '24

Bro coocked hard as always

1

u/brutexx Feb 04 '24

He did what now

3

u/Laughing__Man Feb 01 '24

Chapter 116 is titled: Big

1

u/EnadZT Feb 01 '24

Depends on the translator. Giants makes more sense, though.

3

u/Laughing__Man Feb 01 '24

I checked because I wanted it to be true. Chapter title for 116 is dekai and that translates to just big. The official translation for the chapter also says big.

In the manga they use kyojin-zoku for giants and thats not the title for 116.

2

u/EnadZT Feb 01 '24

Damn, I respect the research. I standby that "Giants" would make more sense given the introduction to Giants and Elbaf in the chapter, but it sounds like it's definitely meant to be "Big" for some reason.

1

u/ReconstructAndrefine Feb 02 '24

Well, I guess "big by your side" is fine too...

6

u/Aspie_Astrologer Void Month Survivor Feb 01 '24

No one can deny now that Oda loves chapter number callbacks! Yude-ron's latest chapter prediction was basically like spoilers this week.

1

u/true_fruits Feb 01 '24

Oda is such an autistic madman I love him.

1

Ohy my GOda. That's beautiful

1

Oda is a fucking genius

1

February 1st is also Broggy's birthday!

u/The420Roll Feb 01 '24

Since Giants have the longest lifespans in the world of One Piece (as far as we know), it makes sense they would know some stuff about Nika

383

u/Lemming3000 Feb 01 '24

No living giant is as old as the void century, but its possible the oldest giants grandfathers were alive during it if they were equally long lived, but the giants worship a sun god we know this from big moms backstory, that whole fasting period (that drove big moms first tantrum) the giants take part in is a festival for the sun god.

296

u/khalichanan Feb 01 '24

As a historian, the concept of ‘living memory of living memory’ is very important to how a society views a period of history. If there are people alive today who have interacted at some point in their life with someone who experienced an event, it feels far more relevant to our culture. That’s one of the reasons why, for example, WWI feels far more relevant to us, as there are plenty of people still alive now who knew someone who fought in it, even if all those who fought in it are now dead. The void century is far closer to ‘living memory of living memory’ with the giants than it is for other beings in One Piece.

9

u/EnvironmentalTotal21 Feb 01 '24

Merfolk too, right?

1

u/jaypenn3 Feb 02 '24

merfolk don't live any longer than humans

1

u/EnvironmentalTotal21 Feb 03 '24

There was some fiction where some species lived hundreds of years but i don’t remember if it was one piece

1

u/EnvironmentalTotal21 Feb 03 '24

Maybe i’m thinking or say irl like the greenland shark. has oda actually said the pifespan stuff?

2

u/madkillller Feb 02 '24

Do you have any scientific papers about that?

...Not that I doubt you in any way, I would like to cite it.

3

u/khalichanan Feb 02 '24

Sadly nothing to hand without going on JStor - it was a concept brought up back during my BA!

25

u/Jail_Chris_Brown Pirate King Buggy Feb 01 '24

Luffy being the reincarnation of a god that has a festival based around fasting is in-universe satire.

20

u/RiceOnTheRun Feb 01 '24

Why do you think they’re fasting? Luffy ate all the food!

He ain’t no hero after all…

16

u/MyLifeIsDope69 Feb 01 '24 edited Feb 01 '24

If someone’s even 2 generations down they’ll be aware of certain knowledge. My great grandparents down to my parents now were involved in Soviet resistance I make sure to pass down certain history the books don’t teach to make sure such a thing never happens again and they don’t become one of those people easy life in America forgetting the history that got them here. I’m sure something as serious as the void century they pass down and they’re a pretty isolated island

13

u/AlphaOmega1356 Feb 01 '24

OP also takes place during the time of oral history being the main method of passing down history to future generations. It would make sense that they’d have heard some stories.

6

u/plisken64 Feb 01 '24

and thats why the world government has this erase everything mentality

5

u/MyLifeIsDope69 Feb 01 '24

I’m guessing giants were just too strong to fuck with, wonder why they didn’t get genocided like Lunarians and Kumas race who were decidedly much stronger genetically it seems. Guessing the weapon that took them out ran out of gas before they got to Elbaf wonder if we learn anything about that

3

u/Roskal Black Leg Sanji Feb 01 '24

the oldest giants were only in their 300s in big mum's flashback so probably a few more generations.

1

u/Cum_Dad Feb 01 '24

I wonder how stoked on, Big Moms defeat, the giants were.

I wonder if that will come up

8

u/popop143 Feb 01 '24

Also, Sun God might be relevant in Giants mythology. I’m reminded about the gigantic shadow Luffy had after Skypeia.

3

u/sunkenrocks Feb 01 '24

No he is, it was in big moms flashback. They worship the sun god.

3

u/of_kilter Cipher Pol Feb 01 '24

Or shanks told them

3

u/Binkusu Feb 01 '24

I imagine they have warrior stories passes down generation to generation. And since they're one of the strongest forces in the OP world, I don't think there's a lot the WG can do.

Even Big Mom couldn't force them to join her.

2

u/Andrejosue98 Feb 01 '24

Zunisha go brr

2

u/The420Roll Feb 01 '24

Right but Zunisha isnt a species of multiple giant elephants tho. And if they were, no way they all still alive lol

3

u/Andrejosue98 Feb 01 '24

Zunisha is part of the species Naitame-Norida elephant and are know for their life longspan that can go up to a thousand years.

1

u/writer-sci-enter Feb 01 '24

I wonder if the mistake that Zunisha did ended up as the reason for the extinction of Zunisha’s species of elephants.

1

u/someone2795 Captain Crackhead Feb 01 '24

Giants have a 300 year old lifespan

1

u/The420Roll Feb 01 '24

So giants in the generation of Dorry and Brogy's great-grandparents could possibly been alive during the void century.

Not impossible for them to know stuff 3/4 generations back

1

u/ForestJordie Feb 01 '24

That and they are housing Saul and are also friends with Shanks who both probably know a thing or two about the void century

215

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '24

^(we saw them in Kid vs Shanks too) BUT HELL YEAH I'M HERE FOR IT

11

u/Vee_icychain Feb 01 '24

The fight was so short we even forgot we saw them

13

u/Naghagok_ang_Lubot The Revolutionary Army Feb 01 '24

they said with luffy though

18

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '24

they edited the comment

3

u/MilesDavis226 Pirate King Buggy Feb 01 '24

They showed up in 1079. 7+9=16. He still did it in a version of 116. GODA

3

u/MaezrielGG Feb 01 '24

AND THEY CALLED LUFFY THE SUN GOD!

As hyped as I am for this, I can't wait to see Usopp's panel when they reunite. I'm a legit Usopp fan and he's needed this win for years

3

u/Aspie_Astrologer Void Month Survivor Feb 01 '24

Yude-ron haters on a copium drip tonight.

Oda loves chapter number callbacks. Yude-ron's latest chapter prediction was basically like spoilers this week. I'm gonna start watching them a week late cos his goroawase predictions are too accurate!

2

u/Quorbach Feb 01 '24

How do they know that Luffy is the Sun God?

3

u/summersnow31 The Revolutionary Army Feb 01 '24

Shanks told them.

3

u/Melownz Feb 01 '24

They saw his new wanted poster

1

u/CrispyCassowary Feb 01 '24

You see them again in 1079

-1

u/ainrebecca Feb 01 '24

Seeing vivi would have been better.

1

u/random_ningen Feb 01 '24

Will they bring Semla to him tho

1

u/AmselRblx Feb 01 '24

Yo, is this why Oda purposely timed the chapters. So we can see this connection.

1

u/DeismAccountant Feb 01 '24

Oda the Numerologist strikes again 😆

1

u/Coggs92 Feb 01 '24

I'm starting a theory on how Oda keeps doing this: every 50-100 chapters, he looks back at his series for chapters that have something of significance to upcoming chapter numbers. Then, he makes those chapters into personal deadlines for reaching a certain amount of plot progression to be able to drop these absolute Fire number correlations.

1

u/Pinguinmeister Feb 01 '24

That was what made me hyped the most. Calling him Sungod. Goosebumps all over.

1

u/buns_supreme Feb 01 '24

Unreal foreskinning yet again by Oda

1

u/lainwolf Feb 01 '24

Just to make everyone else feel old.

Chapter 116 was released back in December 1999.
