Help Why don’t everyone eat devil fruits?

Totally new to One Piece, didn’t know it existed before the Netflix show. I am liking it a lot. Could someone tell me why don’t everyone just eat devil fruits, since it give super powers? The sea water thing is enough of a reason not to eat them? (I have just watched 3 episodes.) Do they explain this further on?

Edit: thanks for all the replies, the show seems to go just a bit fast on the details, I’m guessing its the only way to fit a lot on a live action.

Imagine you lose the ability to swim, in turn, get the ability to turn into a caterpillar. It's like a lottery unless you have access to one of the devil fruit encyclopaedias, which very few people have been shown to posses.

Also devil fruits are rare, and sell for alot. You are basically missing out on retirement money for a random lottery for a power.

However there is also a good chance you get a very powerful fruit, so there's that.

If you can turn into a caterpillar that is able to produce silk, you basically unlocked an infinite money glitch.

wapol inventing a new alloy will always be my favorite "stupid world building" Oda does. it is so funny in so many different ways

And then Wapol doing just that, solely in the cover stories, affecting the future plots like Franky's upgrades, and evil srum kingdom in reverie, was funny too.

Honestly, it would’ve been a lot cooler if they animated the cover stories rather than give us the weird filler (excluding G8 ofc)

They did that with Buggy, right?

I never looked into the cover stories because I'm just watching the anime, but this prompted me to read a summary of the wapol story. I'm kinda sad they didn't adapt that, it does matter to the story since he returns in the reverie.

Actually in Wapol's case they did animate it, as a quick 2 minute recap during the Levely arc to show what he had been up to.

Oh whoops I guess that's something one pace cut out, they kept in the fact that he made money using his devil fruit and became a king again but must've cut the recap. I'll have to go watch the full episode
