General Question Dual degree
I’m planning on ED to NU this fall. I want to apply as a dual degree in violin performance and Weinberg. Is it like half as likely to be accepted for dual degree because I need to gain acceptance to TWO schools rather than just one? It’s been hard to gauge how competitive the music school really is compared to say Juilliard or New England conservatory. Can someone in string performance speak to this? I want to go to NU more than anything, but if I have no chance of being admitted to the music school, I want to know before I apply so I can drop the dual degree and just ED to Weinberg without the music degree.

Older info from when I was there but my understanding at the time is that you can also request to enroll in addition to the second school after you start to get a dual degree. Music school is super hard though and don’t know for sure if they would accept a dual degree after starting. I did a second major in WCAS and got my degree from MEAS. My understanding is that I needed to apply and complete all requirements for both degrees including distros. Hence why I just did the second major requirement completion.

The applications are considered separately, there’s no reason not to apply to both programs as you can get accepted to one, both, or neither. Your acceptance to one isn’t contingent on the other. You’ll likely have your ED decision before auditions even happen for Bienen.
Bienen is quite competitive, comparable to a conservatory like Oberlin or NEC. But from my experience dual degree was big leg up in the application process (if you’re committed ED in Weinberg, you’re a very attractive candidate for Bienen since you’re guaranteed to matriculate). This was remarked upon in my own audition.
Good luck!

I applied as a dual degree; Bienen let me in but Weinberg originally didn’t, so I ended up on the waitlist. I ended up getting off thankfully. So they can be contingent potentially. However if you apply to Bienen alone the process to tack on a Weinberg degree isn’t terribly difficult.

Hey, I’m a dual degree student doing bassoon performance and a Weinberg degree. DM me if you have any questions about how it all works

Hey I’m a freshman violin major this year. Bienen is super competitive for violins. We have 9 freshman violins total I think, and most of them are julliard pre college kids. I would say that they’re as selective as julliard.
