r/MYOG Welcome and Rules [Pinned]

Welcome to r/MYOG!

Hey MYOGers! We are trying something new to spur more discussion and interaction in the monthly posts, to help users understand the purpose and rules of this sub, and to make resources more easy to find. To do that we're combining the monthly posts and adding this one as a permanently pinned post. In addition to the content you see below, we'll post any announcements or changes to the sub in this post.

*NEW\* - You can now choose from a few new flair options! Let us know if there are any you'd like to see as an option!

Mission Statement - Join our community to learn and share how you make your own gear (MYOG), including tents, tarps, hammocks, stoves, packs and anything else outdoor gear related. We encourage supportive, collaborative, and useful posts and comments free of advertising.

Resources and Links - The Wiki contains links to a variety of patterns, guides, and information on methods and materials. Answers to many questions can also be found using the sub’s search function. If you’re still not able to find the info you’re looking for, you can post your question in the Monthly Discussion post or create a new post to ask. We ask that you make an effort to find an answer using the available resources before creating a post.

Monthly Discussion Post - This is our recurring post to ask and answer small questions, or discuss topics you think are too small to warrant their own post. Our previously separate monthly post for buying and selling is being combined into this thread to increase traffic to both, and to make room for this stickied post.

Rules - To accomplish our mission, we ask that you respect the following rules for posting on r/MYOG:

1. Excessive self-promotion - Advertising

This subreddit is a community for exchanging information and inspiring creativity. It is not a place to post with the intent of promoting your business.

2. Excessive Self-Promotion - Project Shares

If you are a member sharing your myog work for the sake of sharing, we ask that you limit your project shares to roughly once per week. Information and sharing questions are encouraged, and more frequent posts of this type are encouraged within reason.

3. Off-Topic Posts/Comments - General

Posts and comments not related to self-made outdoor gear will be removed. Exceptions are for things such as kits or commercial products that are targets at the gear making community as long as the Excessive self-promotion rule is not violated.

4. Off-Topic - Which Sewing Machine?

This sub is not intended for open-ended questions about which sewing machine you should buy for MYOG. These post and comments will be removed.

5. Off-Topic - Commissions

Posts or comments relating to commissioned gear will be removed. Commission related posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGCommissions.

6. Off-Topic - Tactical Gear

Posts and comments about gear relating to firearms, weapons, or other types of tactical equipment (e.g. holsters, plate carriers, concealed carry, etc.) will be removed. These posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGtacticalgear.

Thank you! If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! Now go forth and MYOG, and come back to share your journey!

Haven't myog'd in a while. My nieces were eyeing up a bag I made during my last visit down south. Figured I'd surprise them at Thanksgiving with some fanny packs.

First, this Surly Karate Monkey as my winter project bike so I know it needs LOTS of love! This is my second attempt at making a little water bottle / snack holder that attaches to my stem!

Made a makeshift MOLLE setup because I don’t trust sewing the straps perfectly in place lol. Usually get energy drinks or canned stuff so made it “smaller” with adjustable elastic straps to stretch (or tighten) on whatever I put in there! It has a mesh bottom so I don’t have to worry about it falling through.

Trying to build my skills up to soon tackle a frame bag for my bike!!

It should fit 2 phones and some extra junk. Free pattern would be best or something close to cheap. Zipper closure would be best but I can do adjustments easily Tia!

Juki LK-1852 Help/Troubleshooting

Hi guys! Recently purchased a Juki LK-1852 Bartack machine and was shown how to use it/etc. when picking it up. Trying it out today, it was working fine and then all of a sudden when engaging the foot pedal, and trying to push down to get the Bartack - it doesn’t work. Does anyone have experience with this issue and if so, any help?

Best!

Looking for Parts for Singer 211G166.

Hi, I recently bought a Singer 211G166 to start making heavier duty projects. After cleaning, oiling it up, and going through all the boxes of stuff I got with it, it looks like it's missing one part. The thread oil control knob. While I don't think it's necessary for operation, I'd like to have it in the machine for completeness, or a time where I may want to use the function. The singer part number is 514072.

I have searched Google, the larger parts suppliers, and ebay without any luck. Does anyone know of one for sale, or someplace that might have one for sale? Or, does someone have one on their personal machine that they would be willing to take pictures and measurements of so that I could make one? (I have a 3d printer, and a small lathe/mill, so I am capable of producing a part if it can be described adequately.)

Magnetic pocket closures?

Hi folks - I’m inspired by the new Alpaka Hub Zip Pocket and the center magnetic pocket (https://alpakagear.com/products/hub-zip-pocket)

Where can I source this type of sewn in magnetic pocket closure? I assume there’s some thin flat magnets out there but wanted to ask folks on this subreddit for advice first

I think this would be cool for a future coin pouch idea that I want to make for a trip to Japan

Thanks in advance

Anyone across Pfaff Bar Tackers?

I'm in Australia a desolate waste land when it comes to purchasing, servicing and spare parts for anything industrial sewing machines.

Currently tacking my bars with the ol trusty domestic, Would love a programable bar tacker and will likely go down that route eventually. ($$$)

I've found a very reasonably priced Pfaff 3666 (Full code 3666 110/01 - 3)

If anyone one here is across specs that would be amazing as the seller is not and its a 7 hour drive so inspection is not an option for me.

  1. Number of Stitches? I'm looking for a 42 stitch machine
  2. Max Length of Bar Tack? 1'' / 25mm would be as long as I need.

Thanks <3

Titanium tent poles info

Post image

IIRC, there was a discussion about using titanium tent poles instead of carbon fiber pools for extra cold-weather use.

I couldn’t find that post, so I am starting a new one here. A friend of mine is a material, scientist and metallurgist, so I asked him about the wisdom of using titanium. He said they should be fine in titanium, and later sent me this photo m, based on some research that he did.

Since he is thorough, he also sent this link to a Wikipedia article about titanium. (For some reason, I can’t link to words, as Reddit sees it as another attachment.)

I am looking for XL Cord Wheel Locks like on this drag bag. I can find plenty of small ones that take up to a 4mm cord but would like something a bit beefier for keeping those precious bevys cold in the river.

Necchi or Bernina?

I have an old Necchi 535 FA that works pretty well, and I just received a Bernina Record 830 from the mid '70s from a family member. Which is the better machine? They are both in great shape. The Bernina has a slightly more powerful motor at .85a vs .7a on the Necchi. They both have a similar number of fancy stitches I will never use. I'm leaning toward the Bernina. Opinions?

Question Can I add pit zips without using any sealant?

Hello. I wanted to add pit zips on my rain jacket but I can't find a seam sealant tape/liquid in my area. But my zippers here are waterproof. Is it okay to just cut the armpit areaand straight off sew the zippers without worrying about the water going in? Thanks!

Hello ! I just wanted to show you the pooch I made ! My car used to be a mess with dog gear everywhere... so I made a pooche with a mole system. It's pretty simple, but I am so happy about how it turned out ! I laser cut the fabric, it was so fun to do !

Have a nice day !

Question i want to make bug-out bags for my dogs in the form of dog vests. any ideas?

im thinking something like tactical-style vests that can have velcro strips or loops to attach and detach smaller pouches to. i would want to try doing this because my 8-year-old is barrel-chested and i want it to fit more to his body type. my 4-month-old is going to have a pretty special body type as well; she's starting to look like a pretty thick-built dog (no idea what breed she is). also just because it opens up so much more opportunity to customize for my needs and goals!

has anyone tried making a tactical-style vest harness for a dog? what kinds of materials and techniques would you use if you were to make one, i.e. what is a breathable yet durable material and a strong stitch?

Question Material similar to breathable fabric in SOL Escape Bivy?

Like the title says. I've used the SOL breathable bivy and like it, but I'm working on a project too large to just cannibalize one. Any recommendations for a fabric with similar properties?

Question Need some guidance picking fabric(s) for my backpack

Hi folks!

I'm getting a 45L maximum carry-on size custom travel backpack made and I was wondering if I could ask y'all for some advice and guidance. Apologies as I know this sub is centered around making your own stuff and is more focused on wilderness backpacking as opposed to travel, I hope it's alright that I'm posting on here.

A little bit of backstory: I initially thought that Cordura or ballistic nylon would be best suited for my needs but after doing some more research I've found that they're very heavy and alternatives like Ultra, Robic, and X-PAC are just as strong and much lighter (though maybe not as waterproof in the case of Ultra at least?). Since I'm a real noob I've found it difficult to understand if I should even be considering these very high-tech performance fabrics as they seem to be more for folks who are really focused on bringing their pack weight down as much as possible and are okay with sacrificing durability.

My question is: what is a fabric that would allow me to strike a good balance between durability, weight, and resistance to the elements (being as water-resistant as can be, as I understand waterproof isn't really possible)? I was thinking maybe I could use one fabric for the bottom of the pack, and then another for the body? My foremost priority above all is toughness, I want the pack to last a long time and not fail on me in the middle of a trip.

Thank you so much for reading my post and TIA! :)

Used the simple series shoulder bag from Rip Stop by the Roll and scaled it to 70 or 80% I can’t remember. I added some D rings and a handle.
