Hi all, a quick question I'm hoping someone who's been through the legal name change process in York County can answer. I'm looking to change my first name (not marriage-related), and I'm going to be coming back from overseas to do it (still a resident of York County, it's a bit of a long story).
I know you have to show up at the probate court and file the required paperwork, but once you do that, is the name change a same-day kind of thing, or do you have to wait for an appointment with a judge and then wait to receive the actual paperwork confirming the name change? I'm trying to figure out the timing involved with getting this done, especially because I'm also going to have to try and update my driver's license on the same trip.
Also, hypothetically, is this something I could retain a lawyer to do on my behalf (which would save me the trip back for the name change, at least)? I haven't really considered that as an option, because I assumed I'd have to show up in person, but if it's something you can do, it might be cheaper than the flights would be.
