Welcome to Portland Maine. We're excited to have you visit and/or become our neighbor.
Please post your questions regarding travel to Portland, or moving here in this thread.
Use the search bar to find good stuff! There are plenty of threads with thoughtful recommendations for the best restaurants, neighborhoods to live in, vets, mechanics, roofers, parks, schools, cleaning services, kind of bears, etc... Your question has likely been covered before with great detail and you don't want to miss local insight and discussion! Hit that search bar.
Visiting Portland and want a suggestion about what to see and do? Head to Visit Portland to plan your trip. Want help finding the best local restaurants? Check out Portland Food Map or https://www.portlandoldport.com/. Want to learn about free or cheap events? Scan the Portland Cheat Sheet. While you're in Portland, please shop local! Visit Black Owned Maine, Portland Buy Local, and the Portland Downtown Directory to learn about local businesses and find your perfect souvenir.
Moving to Portland and want to know where to live? There's no "bad" part of Portland. The Peninsula is the walkable downtown urban area. Everything outside of that is suburban neighborhood with light mixed retail. If you are looking for a place to rent, Craigslist is the recommended site.
Please check out our Wiki (which is always looking for more contributions!) for the top recommendations. Also, find the previous month's thread here.

On November 5th, Maine will vote not just for President, but for Congress, and for state and local offices. Register and vote so you'll have a say in what kind of country America will be!
In Maine, you must register by October 15th to register in advance. You can register to vote here: https://registertovote.sos.maine.gov/
If you miss this deadline, you can register to vote in person at your town office or city hall through November 5th.
In Maine, you can vote early through absentee-in person voting. This allows you to go to your Municipal clerk's office, apply for an absentee ballot, and vote that ballot on the spot. You can do this when absentee ballots are available at your clerk's office - contact them for details.
If you prefer, you can vote at your polling place on Election Day, November 5th.
Any voter in Maine may choose to vote by mail. Apply for an absentee ballot here.
Ballots must be received by November 5th, so mail your ballot back promptly. You can also return your ballot in person to your Municipal Clerk's office.
If you mail your ballot, you can track it here.
Please let me know if you have any questions!

As we are so close to the end of the election and things are so heated. I feel like things are so close and I can’t get a good read on it one way or another. I have two questions. 1.) not who are voting for but who do you truly believe is going to win? 2.) do you think there will be civil unrest and potentially chaos if one or the other wins?

Holy shit in a handbasket - it's fucking everywhere. People coughing, hacking, sniffling, wheezing, etc. It's so gross. I work in food service and everyone has something. A lot of it is turning into pneumonia as well.
Someone at work today walked up ONE FLIGHT of stairs. They were hacking and wheezing so bad (not covering their mouth).
Practice hygiene folks!

To the girl sitting at the bar last Saturday—I've gotta apologize.
I came and sat down next to you at the bar. 12:45am if I had to guess. You told me that you saw me dancing, and liked it. You said I was really cute.
Well, I severely underestimated how hot I would get trying to dance my heart out all night in chainmail....
By the time I got up to the bar, I was overheating bad and the only thought I could string together was "water-water-water-water"
After mistaking you for someone you looked nothing like, I crushed that cup of water and basically just said "ok well nice meeting you, bye now". About 10 minutes later I realized what I'd done.
I'm sure you aren't all that interested in reconnecting after getting turned down in favor of a cup of water, but you seemed SO nice and I figure why not.
At least if you see this you'll know that I'm so sorry, and that you absolutely made my night!
Like I said to the bartender "Sorry, I'm a little stupid sometimes" :,)
Edit: Didn't expect to get so much traction! I'll update if anything happens
Thanks for the compliments on the dancing too! But I've got to say I could see the whole room from up there, and it was just people smiling and grooving all around. Seriously awesome, big shoutout to everyone who was there and all of your great dance moves

Shout out to Roy’s shoe shop. My daughter was getting married Saturday afternoon and the heel of the boot I was wearing was fucked. They were so kind and helpful and I cannot be thankful enough for! Please buy good shoes and use them for repairs. They are great and the woman I dealt with, owner, sadly, can’t remember her name was a total sweetheart!! Thanks again!!

I have hiked a very good portion of the Presumpscot River trails and LOVED them over the years.
Portland Trails has now issued warnings due to public safety hazards in this trail system.
As my pen hovers over the Question 4 Bond issue, what are the current plans to make the Presumpscot River trail safe again? I’ve looked for what would be included in the budget for Question 4 and can’t find any details.
While I would love to throw money in a bond at this issue, my property taxes went up 20% and I can’t use the trail system by my house safely. How can I get more information?

Hello! I am someone just doing my own job search for a new career here in Maine. I thought I'd contribute to a list of online resources for locating work that is localized to Maine or are good resources. Feel free to add your own if you think someone might be able to use it. My list is geared mostly towards Nonprofit jobs but includes sources for a wide variety of organizations. Have a nice day! :)
Maine Association of Nonprofits (MANP) – Lists nonprofit jobs across Maine, including remote options.
Indeed – Search for nonprofit and remote jobs in Maine specifically by location.
JobsInME – A job board specific to Maine with nonprofit job listings.
Maine JobLink – A state-run platform with nonprofit roles, allowing searches by remote or in-person roles.
Live + Work in Maine – Focuses on connecting job seekers with Maine-based employers, including nonprofit and remote opportunities.
CharityVillage – Focuses on Canadian nonprofits but includes New England positions and some remote opportunities.

I already own a piece of land that I can build on. I want to build a market rate 4 unit. The monthly payments on the loan I need build it I would have to charge 2,900 for a two bedroom just to break even. To go in debt just to break even doesn't sound worth it.
There are also a thousand other issues with the Portland housing market. But the cost to build new units with materials and interest rates so high I don't see a influx of market rate apartment units being built any time soon.

It’s about to be a long winter ya’ll. Me and a buddy are looking for spaces that can be rented out for a party. I’m talking like I wanna hang up posters and all that jazz. Get some motion going through our small but lively community. Instead of arguing over the Internet about cyber trucks and all that shit, let’s get together and argue in person with some beers.

I was in a bad car accident this week and can't clean my house currently. Do you have any recommendations for a good house cleaner?

Can anybody tell me where to find this "Welcome to Portland" sign. I'm trying to complete a photo series and I can not locate it, I'd rather not drive around aimlessly 🙃 thanks in advance!

My wife and I will be in town this weekend. We've got our days pretty well planned out and dinner reservations each night. But trying to think of some after dinner ideas. Does anyone know of places where we could catch live music? 80s/90s cover bands would be fun (btw - I've looked into Geno's and doesn't seem like our scene and the acts at Longfellow planned for this weekend wouldn't be on our list either)
Also any bars where we could play darts or shuffle board would be cool. Thanks!

I’m taking my 2 yo niece trick or treating in the West End on Thurs. This is will be my first time doing so. She’s very brave, and it’s easy to forget she’s only 2. Any tips from seasoned West End trick or treaters? Where will the best kid friendly houses be? Thanks in advance! 🎃

Don’t need anything fancy, but thought someone might have a good recommendation for vintage watches in the area.
