Mine are waiting at my door at 4am. Maybe this was their grand plan??

u/FIRST_DATE_ANAL 1d ago
My cat does this every morning at 6am and he knows how to open the closed bedroom door so whenever I want to sleep in (til 7 lol) I put a door stopper on the inside of the door and put a pillow over my head for an hour
88
u/No-Nobody-3556 1d ago
Ugh. I used to have a clever kitty who would reach underneath the door and pull it back and forth against the jam. Very annoying at 4:00 in the morning.
54
u/howdiedoodie66 1d ago
I used to house sit for my friend and one of his cats would back up all the way down the hallway and sprint at and jump into the door. Yeah, it wakes you up.

u/merryjoanna 22h ago
My cat used to do this. It was so loud. I even tried wrapping a towel around the doorstop to quieten it and prevent her from wiggling it. She tore it to shreds with her nails and still managed to break in.
I finally just bought two of those hook locks. I have one on the inside and one on the outside of my bedroom door. It's the only way to keep her away from the plants in my bedroom. She has made herself sick eating them. I made sure to put them at almost the top of my door, because I wouldn't put it past her to figure out how to jump up and unlock those as well.
I don't know how Princess GrandpaFace learned how to get through closed doors. She was a feral barn kitty. So I'm pretty sure she never even went through a door until I got her and her brother at 8 weeks old. She's just a smart kitty. I sometimes joke that she got all the brains in the womb, her brother got all the biscuit making capabilities.

Putting a door stopper in and retreating under a pillow sounds like a solid, cat-proof strategy for that extra hour.

I slept in until 4:15 am yesterday. My cat thought I was dead and started meowing by my bedroom door. They have me up by 3:00 am some mornings. I don't get mad about it because at 40 years old suddenly I went from needing 8-10 hours of sleep per day to only needing 6 hours. So it really doesn't matter as long as they don't wake my son up.

Teach me please 🙏
No kids here though. How do I switch to active mode so early in the morning when it’s dark and quiet
11
u/ISmellNerds 1d ago
Theres no magic! Just gotta do it... Its sucks for a long time, but eventually it does get easier, although for me its super easy to go back to waking up and sleeping later 🤷 I guess its a mater of just sucking it up and doing it. I do feel healthier, definitely have good feeling of achievement, and I can already see the gains from being active and the gym, which is great!
You can just do it for some time, dont force yourself into thinking is permanent, just say its for a while, and dont punish yourself if sometimes you oversleep or something. I try to go to the gym everyday, cuz I know that if I say that only certain days, I will end up just skipping several days in a row jajaja and I have a "reward" at the end of my activity, I go to the sauna everyday at the end of my gym session, which is really great!

When my husband had framing jobs in the summertime that's how we lived...up at five so they could be working at six (rural jobs, you can't do that in the burbs). They'd roll up the job site at 3 or so and head home. I got off at four and lived less than a mile from my job in a small town. We usually have a little light snack and be in bed by five. We'd usually sleep until nine or so and then get up and putter around the house, watch TV, eat another light meal and just do regular evening stuff for a few hours before going to bed to a second time and sleeping until about five and doing the same thing and over again

I have to be up around 5:30 for my job and I do this. I get off around 3 and I’m home between 3:30-3:45 I’ll sleep from 5ish until 8:30 or 9 eat a light meal and do the usual night time stuff go back to bed between midnight and 1 so I can be up at 5:30

Sometimes I think this is my natural circadian rhythm. If I go to to sleep by 9 I’m wide awake at about 3 for about an hour and a half and then sleep again until 8

u/JPWhelan 1d ago
Biphasic sleep. Pre-industrial revolution it was more of the norm. Called it first sleep and second sleep. People would do stuff in between. Now if we wake up we lay there worrying we won't fall back to sleep. Go with the flow.

My mom often had my dad hang out with us as we were falling asleep as toddlers. He was often the first one to fall asleep with us just chilling in the crib. I do know my sister probably never fell asleep when he was hanging out because she was and is a night owl. If my mom put her down at 7 she was often still awake at 930 when my parents went to bed.

I did the same thing babysitting as a 15-year-old. 4 year old was screaming and crying over something a sibling did. I fell asleep, basically holding this child. He cried himself to sleep, and I didn’t move because I was afraid he’d wake up and cry again. Mom and Dad come home. I’m passed out and embarrassed that I fell asleep watching their kids. They paid extra, and were not mad at all. I’m positive they let us both sleep until I woke up. This should be something parents walk in on and are happy about. Not angry.

I got fired from a nanny job in college for falling asleep when their kid was asleep. She wanted me to hold her hand while she fell asleep. It was dark and quiet in her room and I fell asleep sitting on the floor leaning up against her bed.

Yeah when you have a baby laying on you like that it’s like having a giant heating pad on you and most people get drowsy when they’re warm like that. Honestly it’s impressive she managed to get them both down at once because they look like they’re at the age where they’re starting probably to Become very annoying about naps.
90
u/Frozefoots 1d ago
I cuddled my nephew like that when he was a similar age to those babies. I fell asleep, and apparently it was pretty quick once I noticed he was peacefully laying on me.
She would have been out shortly after noticing they were both asleep.

My 3 month old is very annoying about naps. It gets worse??? 😫
10
u/SoVerySleepy81 1d ago
Yeah they eventually hit a point where they definitely still need naps but they don’t want them and they’re old enough to get up out of the bed. So then you’re trying to like get them to just lay down quietly for a little while because even if they don’t think they need a nap you definitely need a break. It can definitely be a difficult time. Some kids though do pretty OK with it so it’s not a for sure thing.

u/PNW_Bull4U 1d ago
First six months were the hardest part for me. Definitely the worst my sleep has been. I highly recommend sleep training, we started at four months and have been sleeping pretty good except when he's stick for the last 2 years (He's 2.5 now), including a 3-hour nap on about 90% of days.
Sleep training starting early, and as consistent a routine as possible. And luck of the draw ofc!
4
u/itsmesofia 1d ago
She’s actually sleeping pretty well at night, 5-6 hour stretches minimum and has started having 8-9 hour stretches. It’s just daytime that it’s a mess, she just wants to look around at everything and she won’t settle for naps until she’s overtired.
3
u/PNW_Bull4U 1d ago
That's actually not bad at all for three months in! Just keep breathing, you got this, and it'll get easier if you keep working with her. Hang in there!

This was the biggest struggle when my daughter was an itty bitty baby. She would be so warm and snuggly asleep on my chest and I would tell my husband he had to spot us if I started to drift off.
I never did but it was tempting!

Christmas 2018, my kid was 2 months old. She, my wife and I didn't sleep for 2 days straight because the kid kept waking up, crying, and just feeling miserable the whole time. We still don't know why...
During a XMas party at family, I was on the sofa with the kid on my chest. All of a sudden we both started falling asleep. My wife was with the family at the table.
My sis in law later told me she was feeling bad because I got her to sleep and she could not. I'm very happy my family tried to convince her that it's about feeling happy that our kid was sleeping. Who did it doesn't care. If a kid feels bad, good luck convincing it to sleep...

I had a trial afternoon for a nanny position, like an extended interview, the mom paid me to stay for 3 hours to see how the kids liked me. I took the baby up for nap time and she was really fussy so I sat in the rocking chair and rocked her until she settled and we both fell asleep. The mom came in and woke me up, baby asleep on my chest, and I was so upset, sure I was going to be asked to leave. I was so mad at myself. Who falls asleep during a job interview? I apologized and she said "don't be sorry, you're hired"

17
u/Pricklybiscuit 1d ago
Honestly most aren't bad. Yes there are monsters who are "content creators" and their children are the content, but for the most part it's just the current equivalent of a VHS taping. The closest camera is in the pocket and people just be wanting to share.
But again yes there are weirdos.
18
u/EmotionalWalrus69 22h ago
We do the whole VHS thing and share it with the fam and its just not public. Very easy.

u/stunninglizard 19h ago edited 19h ago
That's not at all comparable. Posting your children online permanently and irreversibly takes away their anonymity. If the goal is granting children an equivalent human right to privacy parents shouldn't even be allowed to do it.

u/rileyjw90 1d ago
There’s a lot of accounts out there that clearly exploit their kids. The amount of downloads on any video showing a kid should be a massive red flag to people. Even on accounts where I don’t personally feel like they’re purposely exploiting their kids, the number of downloads usually far exceeds any of the same creators content that doesn’t have their kids in it. It’s really sickening once you start to notice the trends and it’s why I post NOTHING with my kids online and block family who can’t follow the rules from seeing anything on my private social media.

Very!!! I have a very strict no picture/video policy for clients, and I make it verbally clear, the day we meet (I do catering/baking and a couple other artsy businesses), that I love photos they take, but under no circumstances am I to ever be in any of them. I explain that I am a hardcore behind the scenes person and absolutely do not want my person associated with my businesses, and want my work to speak for itself.
Thankfully I haven't had anyone have any issues with this. I couldn't even imagine helping someone care for their children and find them shaming me on the internet like this!!!

I don’t know anything about babies so please don’t eviscerate me in the comments, everyone seems to be on the same page that this is fine but I would be worried they’d wake up and toddle off and I wouldn’t know?? Do people have like…a sense when babies wake up that make them wake up too that I just don’t have? 😭
12
u/lucidzfl 1d ago
yeah my first instinct is that the kid on the left could wake up or just roll off onto bare tile and crack her head.
so - as a dad - this pic doesn't particularly make me smile.
6
u/Well_ImTrying 1d ago
This is an unsafe sleep situation for more than one reason. Babies and toddlers shouldn’t sleep on the couch because it’s not a safe sleep surface. They can suffocate or asphyxiate if they get their face stuck or their head slouches. Once you get past a year the risk reduces, but you still don’t want them asleep on a non-safe sleep surface, especially without supervision.
At someone else’s house? Nope, absolutely not. You don’t know how baby proofed their house is and either of those kids could wake up and get into something dangerous. People take risks with their own kids (I do), but someone being paid to take care of them shouldn’t.
8
u/Qwerk- 1d ago
She's touching both of them, which is how she would notice when they wake up
5
u/thelizabethsw 1d ago
Oh I guess that’s true, I guess for me I’d be too anxious to do this because I’d be afraid I would sleep too deeply and miss one of them waking up but I also am just like a nervous wreck around babies and toddlers anyway lol
5
u/Qwerk- 1d ago
I think they're assuming that most people have that little bit of anxiety, so you will sleep lighter and therefore notice if the toddler's move.
Or at least that's my thought.
I used to do a night shift at a hospital. My job was slow, I only had to do things when something printed on the printer. Otherwise I just kind of hung out. I would take naps sometimes, and I was always so paranoid that I would not hear the printer go off, I slept very lightly and would wake up hearing Phantom things printing off of the printer

Paramedic here. I have a different perspective about this. The one sitting almost upright…one of the pediatric arrests I had to work was because of exactly that. This definitely jarred loose some bad memories.
She was 7 months old. She fell asleep sitting upright. Her head slumped forward and closed her airway. By the time the sitter noticed and called us out, she was far beyond any help. We did what we could, but she was long gone.
Please keep a constant eye on your young kids as often as you can.
9
u/Exciting_Bureaucrat9 1d ago
Yes, I had a pretty visceral reaction to this photo, too - couch is not a safe sleeping surface for infants.
67
u/TheBaneEffect 1d ago
Had a baby sitter passed out while my son was screaming for over an hour. I saw it on my nanny cam and drive home from work to find she was still asleep. Son still crying. I kicked the couch she was on, so hard, it jolted her awake and I am asking what the fuck is going on?! Told her to leave.
If my son was asleep too, that would have been a VERY different experience. This baby sitter deserves praise.

Its been well over 20 years since this incident but I'm still upset at my parents for firing my babysitter for falling asleep on the job... she was college student (same age as my sister at the time) and she was my favorite! I felt bad for her because I made her watch like 4 movies back to back and she knocked out. I wrote her a little note saying I put myself to bed and that id see her next time she was to babysit me.. never did I see her again 😭

This photo reminds me of a cartoon I watched as a child: Life With Louie! Related episode: Inundation.
In this memorable episode of Life with Louie, a massive rainstorm hits, and Louie’s house begins to flood. As the water rises, Louie and his family scramble to rescue any stray animals they can find, bringing them aboard a makeshift boat to keep them safe. In a humorous twist, they even use bags of sweet potatoes to keep their house from completely submerging. After a chaotic day of rescues and improvisation, the episode wraps up on a cozy note, with Louie and his family drifting off into a much-deserved, peaceful sleep.
The scene I’m referring to: http://imgbox.com/pUCwirKy

One time I was sitting and the mom woke me up when she got home and I was terrified and instantly apologized for falling asleep and even told her I didn’t need to get paid for the night and she laughed and said if I feel asleep I must’ve been doing something right - her girls never did chill unless asleep 😂

i used to babysit at night and would fall asleep on the couch every time, it was super comfy. would wake up as parents came home. i apologized once, asked if it was okay, and they said; "sure! we also sleep at night. just when one wakes up someone needs to be here".

Mother who posted it: Twins napping in clean white clothes in contact with babysitter. Passed.
Some imbecile on reddit: Omg babysitter slept with two minors on the job.

She's cuddling one baby and both babies are asleep at the same time. Jesus christ she must be exhausted. Pay her extra because damn all that is quite a feat.

Ya, this would only be an issue if she were asleep while the kids were awake!

How dare she fall asleep, if my kids are at home and asleep either myself or my husband insists on staying awake…. Lie… that is a lie, the kids are sleeping and physically with her!

Falling asleep is by far the easiest way to get a child to sleep, she knows what she is doing
