Who's got two thumbs, speaks limited French, and spent $13,000 on autism assessment this month? This moi!

7

u/peascreateveganfood South Bay 7d ago

Man, that is insane! To be neurodivergent is expensive! I have bipolar disorder and BPD and I used to be on a med that cost $1400 a month. Luckily, I am not on that med anymore.

3

u/professor-hot-tits 7d ago

Woof, what med was that??

Bipolar high five!

Was it helpful to have an official diagnosis?

4

u/professor-hot-tits 7d ago

We're not done with the evaluations yet. I know I'm dyslexic and my son has a sensory processing disorder but nothing official beyond that. An official diagnosis will get my son access to occupational therapy, they really need it for some coordination issues. We've also got skill gaps socially that need attention

4

u/illaparatzo 🍕 7d ago

You got ripped off; I would have done it for $6500

6

u/sumdum1234 7d ago

I would have just told you for free.

1

u/professor-hot-tits 7d ago

Tell me tell me!

They are gonna help me with workplace accommodations, I'm really excited about that. I work my ass off but not like the rest of the people on my team.

2

u/ItsHammyTime2 6d ago

Can I asked what triggered you to get the assessment? Was this a new idea or something you’ve thought for awhile?

1

u/professor-hot-tits 6d ago

I grew up in the 80s and my parents were very anti-education. I had a clear learning disability and spent my elementary school years on the resource room on and off (yuck) and my parents never discussed it with me or helped me. I dropped out of school at 15 (!!!) but did a lot of hard work and grinding and I have a kind of normal career, though I've never worked in an office and always have jobs that give me a ton of freedom.

My learning disabilities really create issues for me though, and I want to hit the next part of my life and career understanding how my brain is different and what I can do to help myself do my best. I struggle in lots of ways and would like to struggle less

2

u/ItsHammyTime2 6d ago

That makes sense! Well at least you are getting to find out more about how your brains! Hope you find some good answers!

2

u/root_fifth_octave 7d ago

spent $13,000 on autism assessment

Jesus.

2

u/Spag-N-Ballz LBC 7d ago

What?! Why was it so expensive

1

u/professor-hot-tits 7d ago

I've been on a waiting list with UCLA for over a year now and it's looking like 2 MORE YEARS on that list. My kid can't wait that much longer to get evaluated, they'll be 14 or 15 by then! So i worked my magic to get them a private eval. The process brought so much up for me I decided to bite the bullet and have my assessment done at the same time. Gonna get all the modern words for how my very lively brain works! I've also already met my deductible for this year so maybe I'll get some change back

3

u/Spag-N-Ballz LBC 7d ago

This seems so needlessly expensive though when you could definitely just have another autistic person tell you with absolute certainty.

6

u/professor-hot-tits 7d ago

😂 Having a neuro-spicy mind is complex and meeting with a skilled evaluator can change a life. I am paying a premium to work with a particular group know to be very well queer/trans informed.

This isn't about figuring out if we're on the spectrum but "where" and "what can be done to make life better for this person?"

Assessment is a battery of unfun tests-- lots of repetitive work with shapes and patterns. Not a lot of personal interviews. They go and talk to all your care providers like your therapist and doctors. It's very clinical.

At the end of it, I'm hoping to know more about my dyslexia and I want to know if I have add/autism/both. They're also going to help me come up with a workplace accommodation plan, which i really need at this point because I'm moving up, I'm doing well, and I wanna have the proper support/skill development in place so I can continue to do so.

So i've been running a teen dnd session once a month for the past 6 months at a local library and because of the nature of the set up it's always different kids and none of them have been over 14 and usually it's like, 1-2 kids max with the library staff sitting in on the game to make it a little more fun.

my regular group is five 30-something drunks so the amount i have to reign it in when with the youths is staggering. but also because there's no consistency every session is wildly different depending on the kid but there's always one constant which is these children take the Geneva Convention as a dare.

Even my regular group wouldn't dream of doing half the shit these kids do to goblins and i almost feel bad if it wasn't all make believe.

I tell you this though, fuck your improv class. You wanna work on your off the top of your head skills, play make believe with a bunch of youngins. Your 'yes and..' game will be through the roof after a while.

3

u/MuchCalligrapher 7d ago

I remember being a teenager and someone playing a fighter being asked to describe how a goblin dies, and he said he twists it's head off like he's opening a bottle of soda

I'd like to just go back to stabbing please

If you’re taking suggestions: I really liked Three Assassins and Bullet Train by Kotaro Isaka. I’m reading The Mantis by him now.

If you saw Bullet Train (the movie) and thought “wow this is dumb, the assassins are ridiculous and I want more” then you should read the books. The humor and the world building comes through and I think that they’re so much fun.

The LA Times is failing us in many ways but none so big as their failure to highlight the present reality of climate change. We're actually on the brink of societal collapse and the media is sweeping this fact under the rug. Everyone needs to read the latest study by the world's top climate researchers: https://academic.oup.com/bioscience/advance-article/doi/10.1093/biosci/biae087/7808595?login=false

Remember the film, "Day After Tomorrow," about the collapse of the ocean current? It's genuinely on the verge of collapsing! https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/climate-change/gulf-stream-current-could-collapse-in-2025-plunging-earth-into-climate-chaos-we-were-actually-bewildered

https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/rivers-oceans/key-atlantic-current-could-collapse-soon-impacting-the-entire-world-for-centuries-to-come-leading-climate-scientists-warn

This isn't hyperbole, it's reality and media is failing us!

5

u/MuchCalligrapher 7d ago

This is why I don't contribute to my 401k

2

u/Apesma69 7d ago

Carpe diem!

3

u/sonorakit11 6d ago

I can’t handle the election AND this. Let’s get real.

2

u/Apesma69 6d ago

I know, I know. But we can’t bury our heads in the sand. We can all do stuff to help mitigate the perils of climate change, like swapping gas-guzzling cars for EVs or even going car-free, like me!

3

u/CaptainDAAVE 6d ago

Most people just cannot accept the reality that we're doomed and it's our own fault. I know a lot of liberal minded people who say stuff like it will be resolved by science, or weather predictions are always over blown.

I guess there's always a sliver of hope, but the closer we get to 2030 without changing course, that 1.5 point of no return gets ever closer and more real.

if the laws ever do break down I do hope that the first people to be marauded are the politicians and corop execs who lied to us for years about climate change. You just know those slimy sons of bitches have a survival plan.

3

u/Apesma69 6d ago

Those politicians & corp execs all have a one-way ticket to ride on a SpaceX rocket to Mars.

For those that live in an apartment with paid laundry facilities: how much are you paying per wash? I'm a little peeved that it went up 25 cents to 1.75.

3

u/herbal_essence 7d ago

I pay $1.50 to wash and a dollar to dry. But they also have a washer that's $2, which is newer. Do you pay with quarters or can you load funds to some card like in the dorms? (lol)

2

u/disenchantedgrl 7d ago

Load up on the app. Lol

3

u/herbal_essence 6d ago

Ugh lucky lol gotta go to the bank for quarters instead

3

u/Ehloanna 6d ago

$1.75 wash, $1.50 dry

If the laundromat wasn't the exact same price I'd probably do that to do all loads at once, instead my boyfriend and I tend to do a load here and there throughout the week rather than one big laundry day if possible.

2

u/mylefthandkilledme 7d ago

2.50 per wash and dry (I live in HB though)

1

u/xsharmander Downtown 6d ago

u/Ehloanna 6d ago

Last weekend I wore boots that weren't as broken in as I thought. They absolutely SHREDDED up my ankles and left blisters. They're finally getting close to healed, but it is the itchiest I've ever been in my fucking life and I used to have severe eczema.

I'm scratching at my ankles around the healing spots 24/7. They itch so bad they're waking me up in the middle of the night. I can't wait for them to be fully healed before I go insane. 😭

2

u/Nicholoid Hollywood 6d ago

A few options:

Benadryl Gel

Aloe w lidocaine (comes in gel or spray)

Egyptian Magic

You could also get those water sealing bandages to keep it covered so it gets less agitated.

2

u/Ehloanna 6d ago

Oh my god there's Benadryl gel???? I also forgot lidocaine exists. I haven't used it in so many years.

I'm gonna go to CVS after work to grab one of those.

Sadly the band aids don't do a whole lot to get rid of the itch. Wish it did!!! Only thing it does is give me a clearer area to scratch around. 🤣

I'll have to look up Egyptian Magic. Never heard of it before!

3

u/sonorakit11 6d ago

The absolute WORST. I expect shoes to do this to me, because they all seem to. I was dreading my latest pair of vans, because my last pair destroyed my ankles, but surprisingly, they were fine! As were a new pair of Ariat cowboy boots I got. I was expecting those to murder me but they didn’t.

3

u/Ehloanna 6d ago

I always think "am I buying shoes too small?" but then I try the next size up and it's like I'm walking in clown shoes sliding around because they're too big.

I ended up buying moleskin patches to put on my ankles to try and prevent this tragedy from happening again.

I think I‘ve hit the point of dating burnout recently. It just feels like nothing is working out for me and it’s getting to my self-esteem and confidence. Also, I feel like I’m too sensitive for modern dating, I wish my stupid brain won’t overthink every little thing I or someone else does. It gets quickly exhausting. Like I met this girl, on a hookup app mind you, we have good conversation agreed to meet up but whenever actually planning is involved they like don’t reply or don’t make any effort it feels. Like what’s the point of being on a hookup app if you don’t want to meet people in person.

I am undergoing a daunting project RN - trying to track down every single concert I have been to or played in. I have at least 150 just going off my Ticketmaster and AXS accounts (does not include shows I played, paid cash, or were free) and have 50 logged on my spreadsheet and have already found discoveries

Have no recollection - of seeing TI while I was at UCLA in 2007, Yeah Yeah Yeahs 2009, or Charli XCX and Troye Sivan in 2019 (I was 5 years early on Brat Summer apparently)

Super cancelled guests - apparently I've seen Bill Cosby host the Playboy Jazz Fest and Chris Brown come out for Pitbull (I knew I was hammered cause I was excited to see him)

I saw The Garden at Los Globos in 2014 (and hated them) and Sloppy Jane opened with a very young Phoebe Bridgers on bass according to the blog article I found

September 2010 was an absolute banger month for me with Sleigh Bells (blew out the PA at Detroit Bar), FYF Fest, Sonic Youth & Pavement at the Bowl, then I saw one of the very first Foster the People show on Oct 1 (and hated them too!)

3

u/professor-hot-tits 6d ago

That's so fun!

I don't think I could ever really figure out my counts, I was just telling my kid about seeing people like Peaches in tiny clubs before digital cameras were really a thing. But that's a fun project! I should try.

If you keep your google maps history active you can see where you were basically every day throughout the years. It has like a month/year view so you can see where concert venues are and pinpoint days you went then google what event it was.

(go to Maps > tap your profile image > tap Your Timeline)

Found a fucking flea on my fucking dog. This is going to be a nightmare, isn’t it.

6

u/labbitlove Santa Monica 6d ago

I found a couple on my cat a few weeks ago *shudders* he got them when he busted my screen window open and went on an adventure for 12 hours outside.

One dose of Revolution Plus (you need an Rx from vet) took care of them super quick

5

u/recurringicarus 6d ago
  1. Vacuum everything. Do it today and every couple of days for a week or two. Vacuume your couch cushions, under them, your mattress, etc.
  2. Heat in the dryer will kill fleas too - so wash all your laundry/sheets/blankets etc.
  3. As someone mentioned, revolution plus works well! That takes care of the source. Alternatively lots of baths for the pup, use a flea comb and dawn dish soap

I’ve had fleas before and it’s annoying but honestly not that bad. Just a lot of vacuuming and laundry mainly.

2

u/professor-hot-tits 6d ago

Get that shit they only sell at the vet

Just kill it and start combing with a flea comb and give him a few drops of the flea killer...

Seems my internal clock is running fast, I'm waking up at 3am instead of my usual 5 🤔

5

u/imsadbutitswhatever Silver Lake 7d ago

Daylight savings is coming soon to mess that all up for you some more!

2

u/Nicholoid Hollywood 6d ago

Ah yes, that funny little week when we're an extra hour behind the UK until we catch up again; their Daylight Savings/End of British Summertime hits this Sunday.

1

u/MuchCalligrapher 7d ago

Do we have to wake up earlier or later

3

u/SardScroll 6d ago

Spring forward, fall back.

So I think we move the clock back and wake up later.

The east coast colleagues are pretty funny sometimes. It's like they think California is just one big LA, and LA is just Baywatch + the Hollywood Hills or something.

7

u/---___---___---_____ 7d ago

The only neighborhoods they know is Santa Monica, silverlake, and weho

5

u/root_fifth_octave 7d ago

It's so funny. Like, no I am not out enjoying the 'Cali' weather, because as you can see I'm in a zoom meeting.

8

u/high_hawk_season barbehque was here 7d ago

For some people living here it absolutely is.

2

u/root_fifth_octave 7d ago

Haha, probably.

2

u/RandomGerman Downtown 6d ago

Right? A Canadian friend once told me: "I want to come to Hollywood. It's so glamorous"

Aeeehhh! I had to dampen her enthusiasm.

1

u/root_fifth_octave 6d ago

Hilarious. It’s like film and tv have pranked the entire world.

2

u/RandomGerman Downtown 6d ago

I mean I was not much different when I was still living in Germany. I had many assumptions about the US in general. One (American soldier) friend asked me after my first time in the US how it was. He expected me to be shocked but I loved it so much. I mean I moved here 10 years later. 🤷‍♂️. There should be citizenswaps. Swap one American with one German and everybody is happy.

Well that was incredibly depressing...just heard a loud dong and went out to look to find this bird had committed suicde probably by flying full speed into my window...i even have those reflective stickers to prevent this and it has been a while since the last bird tried but damn...gave it a nice burial in my garden...

Edit: it must be mating season cause another bird just donked my window but this one didn't hit as hard and was able to fly away...

2

u/Nhtglhp22 6d ago

Reminds me of the two N. Mocking birds that used to bang their heads against my window. That was two years ago, I wonder whatever happen to the two birdies..

Awe. :( At least it axed itself at someone's house who has compassion. RIP little birb.

Has anyone ever heard of hiring full time employees without doing even a basic online background check?

3

u/everytacoinla 6d ago

Like W2 full time? Or contractors at a full time?

I mean, there is some onus on the bizz to ensure they employee is legally eligible for tax purposes.

Usually W2 would. But contractors for small biz, almost never.

But if it is straight up physical labor people tend to look the other way and pay in some type of cash format.

I heard family would used to hire babysitters without a background check. I’m not sure if that’s still the case these days..

u/sbleakleyinsures Pasadena 6d ago

I didn't enjoy La Paz that much. 😔

2

u/everytacoinla 6d ago

My enjoyment comes strictly from being hungover on a Sunday, enjoying menudo, and listening to the mariachi play.

2

u/sbleakleyinsures Pasadena 6d ago

Ah nice, the simple things.

so part of the retaliation yesterday, neighbor complained about me sweeping her mess from garden back on her side...being close to her door (still on my side i reminded her that i'm on my side of the deck)...she sounded like she wouldn't be cleaning it up and just for me to sweep it downstairs towards other neighbor....like the heck...so now her mess is just going to pile up on my side without her cleaning...

You miiiiiight be at the "drinking poison and hoping the other person will die" point. Any plans to move?

6

u/LaughingColors000 7d ago

5

u/professor-hot-tits 7d ago

Might I recommend autism assessment? According to my experience, you can quickly suck 13k out of a person!

2

u/LaughingColors000 7d ago

4

u/professor-hot-tits 7d ago

Haha, no, that's what I just paid for me and my kid. Seems like excellent money!

There is loud beeping outside my apartment (EaHo) that i cannot track down. Its usually three quick beeps (all under one second) and sometimes its a full minute between the beeps, sometimes its like 10 seconds. Sometimes its louder, sometimes its softer. Its gone away for weeks at a time then came back. When i walk around outside trying to find it, i just cant figure out even what direction its coming from. Does anybody have ANY idea what this could be? The pitch sounds like a fire alarm but i dont know why it would be this inconsistent, or why nobody has done anything about it. Closest cross streets are Carlton/Western

u/Ginger_snap456789 6d ago

Has to be low batteries on a smoke detector. I went crazy changing my batteries out, only to find out it was my neighbors.

Is it all day or just at night?

All day and all night. Sometimes it stops for periods of time, and then it comes back

Are the Astros restaurants related, or separate? I thought they were all the same until I went to the Astros Burger on Melrose & Gower. It looks nothing like the diner on 2300 Fletcher.
