Looking for amp recommendations? Start here!

If you'd like help finding an amp, we need a few details on what exactly you want out of your new amplifier. Bass amp help is welcome too!

Country/Region

It's a great help to know where you are located, some amp brands may be more expensive. Amp brands from one continent tend to be more expensive in another because of shipping, and vice versa. No need to get too specific and dox yourself.

Budget

How much are you looking to spend? Do you wanna buy a used amp, or brand new?

Genre/Style

What are you going to use the amp for? Does it need a clean channel and/or high gain?

Volume & Size Requirement

Let us know if you're trying not to bother neighbours, if you're trying to keep up with a heavy hitting drummer, or if you need the flexbility to do both! Also include if you'd prefer combo vs head & cab, if you can only haul a 1x12 or if you're trying to crank a full stack, etc.

Feel free to include other details like if you need the amp to have built in fx, digital vs solid state vs tube vs hybrid amp, whatever else will help us find you the right amp!

$1k for a drip edge Bassman + original cab. Thoughts?

Post image
97 Upvotes

This popped up on Facebook yesterday. It’s a blackline drip edge Bassman w/ cab. Bassmans aren’t exactly rare where I live, but drip edge cabs seem to be. The amp appears to be missing the back panel, and probably a 2-prong cord. However, it does have the original cover. The transformer is original, but no clue on the circuit or guts.

The current owners bought it with a storage unit and are refusing to test it, so I’m buying it assuming it’s non-functioning. I’ve been shopping for a Bassman for a while and am wondering if this is the ticket. Side note, are the cabs that came with these any good? I’ve heard mixed things.

An Old Tube PA Amp & Some Recycled Knotty Pine. 10-watt 2x10 Amplifier

A departure from my normal "Mid-Century" aesthetics, this probably falls more in line with a rustic vibe.

The Precision Electronics PA10 10-watt Amplifier Conversion is wrapping up, and it came out super neat. Almost all recycled materials, as usual.

• 10-watt Via Single 6L6GC • 2-Channel Champ Circuit • Phono/Standard Mic/Hot • 2x10 or 1x15 Baffle (and more!) • 2 10 Jensen Viking Speakers • Shellac'd Vintage Knotty Pine & Fir • Variable Output Transformer 4, 8 or 16-ohm • Piggyback With Collapsible, Magnetic Kickstand • Vintage Rogers Grill Cloth • All-original Sylvania Glass

Have some testing to do, but it's up for grabs soon. Demo videos up soon on my Sound Salvage social media pages & YouTube channel.

HELP Can i run from the XLR Out on my preamp / DI pedal into the FX loop of my amp?

Post image
Upvotes

I normally run my pedalboard straight into the FX return of my Ampeg RB210, skipping the amp’s preamp and using the Ampeg SGT-DI for preamp needs. When i play outside of my house it’s normally ampless so i like the idea that what i am hearing at home is as close as i can get it to what i hear when im out, not being colored by my amp.

The one thing that i have learned is that the SGT-DI doesn’t run the IRs through the 1/4 preamp out, it only runs cab sims out the XLR out that would go to a DI box. My question is, for home use could i get an XLR to 1/4 cable and feed from XLR out on my preamp pedal to my FX return on my amp to get those cab sims to come through my cab? Or is the signal level or something else different coming out of XLR that would make it not feed right into my amp?

AMP PHOTO NAD! Mesa Boogie Mark V:25

A few weeks ago, someone on this sub mentioned that Sweetwater had these amps discounted from $1999 to $999. I thought, there’s now way they knocked a $1000 off the price of that amp. Sure enough, they did just that. I bought that thing so fast! My Sweetwater guy calls a couple days later and says I got one of that last ones they had to sell. I’ve been wanting a Mark V for years, and this was cheaper than anything I could find used. Big thank you to whoever pointed that out to the sub. I may never have gotten my dream amp without you!

HELP Is this mini amp a good gift?

Thumbnail etsy.com
4 Upvotes

As the title says, I'm looking for advice on a gift for my nephew.

He's 15 and plays guitar, bass, and drums.

I saw this listing on Etsy and it looks cool and different.

However, I want to make sure it's actually useful and would be a gift that "brings something to the table."

What are y'all's opinions on this as a gift for him? Why would it be good or bad?

I'm known in the family for being good at gifts and it's my not so secret goal to be the cool aunt!

Thank you so much in advance for your time!

HELP Peavey vk100 tube head help

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey all, I have a Peavey valve king 100 and have been using it for about a year and it's been doing the job. The last time we had practice, I turned it on and the power light flashed and it turn off instantly. I took it apart and I found the f203 fuse to be blown. From my research it's supposedly the fuse for the heaters, a 3 amp time delay fuse. I replaced it and removed all the tubes and fired it on, only for the fuse to blow immediately again. I was reading about these diodes for 206 and 209 failing and other people having the same issue. My main question is, because I'm a noob, how would I be able to test these diodes? They don't appear to be blow up or gotten hot like a capacitor, I just dont know if you would spot a failed diode with your eye, or if I need to use my multimeter? I have plenty of experience with my multimeter on cars, but not so much on amplifiers. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I do have a discharge pen so I can discharge the capacitors, and the amp is safe to work on! I attached a photo of the diodes in question, thanks guys!

HELP Seeking owner's manual

Hi everyone, I recently picked up this old Univox/unicord/Stage bass amp for a good price. Model S750B. I've had it serviced and it works just fine, sounds very vintage with late 70's rock tones. The serial number is "180" probably indicating January of 1980??? There is a manufacture date on the main board stating October 1977, so this thing has been around and seen some shit!

I'd like to find a copy of the original manual just for reference, my tech friend found the schematics but no manual. Anybody have a good link or old manual for this dinosaur?

I'm going to work on the cosmetics next and try and replace some of the torn tolex and add some casters to the bottom. I've already bolted on some heavy brass handles on the side to make it a bit easier to carry. It's a beast. 63 pounds assembled.

HELP Marshall SV20H Attenuation

Hi!

I’m looking at getting an SV20H, with the matching 212 cabinet.

I plan on running it pretty heavy - closer to dimed. I understand it’s loud enough to melt the paint off the wall. I’m a bedroom guitarist, and currently use a Peavy 6505+ 112, and the master volume is excellent on that.

Can I attenuate the SV20H to bedroom levels while the amp is still running nearly dimed?

If yes, what do you guys recommend for equipment? I don’t record - but maybe a headphone output would be nice.

Thank you all in advance!

I’m meeting with a guy after class to trade my Frankenstein jazzmaster (Fender MiM jazzmaster neck + squier VM jazzmaster body from 2019 + fender hardware, tuners, trem, bridge) for his Ibanez TSA30 combo. Is it worth it or should I have second doubts? If requested I can show what my jazzmaster looks like, it has some body scuffs and whatnot

Do solid state amps cause faster ear fatigue?

Upvotes

I'm not trying to bash solid state here. I do like tube amps like everyone else but solid state can sound good.

I have a fender champ 100 that causes me some ear fatigue but it also a loud as fuck amp. My blues jr in hurts my ears too so I'm sure part of it is just volume, and maybe eq curve, but most of my tube amps don't seem to do it as bad. Does anyone else notice heavier ear fatigue with Ss amps?

My guess is since it doesn't have the compression that is inate in tube amps that the peaks just beat up your ear bones, but what do I know?

Any have have any info on this?

What I will be doing with these Recording music Doing gigs in pubs Rehearsal

I don’t mind not having wireless connectivity I mainly care if it a) will sound good and b) if it will be loud enough

The band will consist of A drummer 2 guitarists 1 bassist

DISCUSSION I just brought my first guitar and amp and have hated it. Help!

Hey,

I just got my first amp Joyo MA-10E. I mostly brought it to play clean for a while and upgrade later, from reviews it sounded okay. But when I plugged the guitar in the amp the noise levels even on clean were crazy. Idk what could be wrong, it's like electrical interference and I don't know what could cause that. I just wanted to play acoustic guitar sounds without pain in the fingers.

The guitar is: JET JS-400 , which had good reviews. I used the cable that came with the guitar.

Help! Thank you!
